AI Doctor : From Slave to Beast King

Chapter 148: A better place

'I guess this will do,' Damien thought while staring at the mouldy cheese block. He glanced at Dan and asked, "Do I need to let it ferment a bit longer?"

"No, this production of penicillium chrysogenum is perfect," Dan shook his head and replied. "Now all you need to do is a sterile fermentation of the mould."

And that was where the problem arose. Damien had asked one of the blacksmiths to make the fermentation chamber but —

He turned to look at the metal box that the blacksmiths had sent him back. There were many problems with these fermentation chambers and as the production of penicillin required strict requirements, this won't do.

"What's the matter, Lord Damien?" Thalia asked when she saw Damien frowning.

"It's nothing," Damien rubbed the back of his head and sighed. He pointed to the fermentation chambers and explained, "There are multiple openings in the chamber. What I needed was a perfectly sealed container."

He sighed again and muttered worriedly, "If this goes on, then it will be troublesome when the patients start pouring in."

It was difficult to produce penicillin in large quantities to begin with; with such a defective container, he was going to waste the sterilised mould.

"Is that so?" Thalia frowned. "I did ask the blacksmith to create a box with no chance of air leaks but the blacksmith told me that it was impossible to do without magic."

She shook her head and said, "We can only hope that we will be lucky enough to run into a mage."

Lucky?

That's right, lucky.

Damien's eyes shone with brilliance as he immediately turned to look at the screen in front of him and he immediately tapped on the lucky wheel section.

Krr.

Chak. Chak.

Churrr.

The noisy wheel rolled and rolled some more before a brilliant white light flashed in the shack. Damien closed his eyes and only opened them when the light disappeared.

"Lord Damien, what is this?" he heard Thalia say when a large metal container appeared in front of them.

"This is the key that we have been looking for," Damien grinned as he examined the fermentation chamber closely. It closely resembled the modern penicillin fermentation chamber and Damien nodded satisfactorily.

With the problem of the chamber being solved, Damien collected the fungus and then placed it inside the fermentation chamber and left it to ferment.

"H–hello,"

Damien heard a childish voice as he pulled away from the fermentation chamber and turned to look behind him.

"Who are you?" Thalia asked the little girl standing at the threshold of the shack.

"I—I am Wendy—I live on Mable street," the girl replied with a stammer. "Are you the doctor about whom everyone keeps talking?" she asked Damien.

"That's right," Damien nodded.

The little girl clenched her fists before raising her hands as if in prayer. She trembled as she said to Damien, "M—My lord, ple–please treat my mother."

As she spoke, she fell to her knees and continued speaking, "My mother is sick, and I–I can't do anything to make her feel better." Tears started to flood down the eyes of the little girl as she sobbed and cried, "I am willing to do anything to save my mother. I can cook and I can also clean and sew really beau–beautiful dresses. I can also wash dishes."

"So... please... Please save my mother. Just once, Lord Doctor."

"Hey, little girl," Thalia raised her hand to stop the girl from crying. "I know that you are worried but—"

"Thalia," Damien interrupted her as he placed a sheet over the fermentation chamber to cover it. He turned and looked at Wendy before saying, "Little girl, go and bring your mother here."

Wendy's eyes brightened when she heard Damien's words. She bowed in front of him as she thanked him profusely, "Thank you! Thank you so much, my lord!"

As she dashed out of the shack, it did not take her more than ten minutes to return with her mother.

Damien took a look at the woman's pulse before saying, "There is no need to worry." He picked up the quill and noted down a list of medicinal herbs. "This is just the flu and nothing serious. Because you did not pay attention to when it started, it had dragged on for so long."

"Just go back and drink this concoction for three days. It will get better."

However, drinking the medicine was not enough. Damien looked at the woman whose hands were thinner than a stick; no wonder Xavier told him that the condition of the city and its people was getting worse by the day.

The Keom family really knew how to suck the blood of the people. Stay updated with mvl

"Thank you, my lord," the woman bowed her head while panting lightly. "I will think of a way to pay the fee somehow."

"Ah, of course. You have to pay the fees but before that," Damien took out a silver coin and handed it to the woman. "You need to get better; if something happens to you, then I am afraid that I will not get my fees back."

The woman looked down at the silver coin in her hands and raised her head before saying, "My Lord, I cannot take this. Its too much—"

"You don't need to worry too much," Damien said to the woman. "Your health comes first; if you feel bad, then try to get better as soon as possible."

"Once you feel better, then you can pay me back."

"My lord…"

"Lord Doctor, thank you so much." Wendy lowered her head and thanked Damien. She had never met a healer as kind as Damien; just the day before, she went to the temple and begged the healer to take a look at her mother but the guards threw her out and told her that she needed to wait till Friday when the healers take a look at the commoners.

But that was the busiest day of the week for the temple and the healers; where would the healers get the time to heal her mother?

If only they had been kind enough to take a look at her mother just like how they treated the man in the big carriage.
