Chapter 34: Damien’s Ambitions
Now if you are married to a beast woman, you should never —ever raise your voice on her. Damien realised this too as well, a tad bit too late when Wistoria's expression changed and she unsheathed her claws.
"Did you just raise your voice at me?" She asked with her claws aimed at his throat. Another inch and Damien would be a goner.
Damien glanced at her claws, there were a bunch of things he could have said but no. He opened his big mouth and went, "You truly need a nail filer."
Of course, in response to his cheeky remark, Wistoria took a swipe at his neck which he dodged by bending backwards.
"Hey! If I die you will be a widow," he said while scrambling on his feet and then stepping away from her.
Wistoria raised a brow before curling her lips in a sneer, "Well, I do look quite nice in black."
Sweat trickled down Damien's forehead as he looked at Xavier who looked back at him. "I can't attack Lady Wistoria," said the man with a cold and detached voice.
"Of course, you can't," mumbled Damien. He raised his head and looked at Wistoria before saying, "Can you put away those claws? You can seriously hurt someone."
For a second Damien thought that Wistoria was going to run right towards him and stab him in the heart. With her outfit which was completely black with only a little pink lapels that added some colours to her entire gloomy disposition, she looked evil enough already. And when she gave him the stinky eye, her expression was 10/10 on the scale of evil looks.
However, she only glowered at him before sheathing her claws. "Now," she said sternly. "What happened? Maybe I will be able to help you?" The way she spoke told Damien that if he dared to say anything against her, she would make him 'talk' in her own way.
He could hear the unsaid threat in her words.
"Nothing of great importance," replied Damien. "And you can't help me unless you have a potion that can make a stubborn oaf to see sense." She gave him another look and he rolled his eyes before telling Wistoria about Henry and his foolish desires of obstructing him from treating his mother.
"If she is not treated within the next four months...even I will not be able to save her," Damien said to Wistoria.
His expression was grave as he shook his head and added, "The Blizzard Bear Bone Powder has provided an ideal condition for the pulsating bulbs to spread faster. Unless they are removed, we —…" he trailed off, not bringing the words he had in his mind to his lips.
Wistoria stayed quiet for a while. She then parted her lips and remarked, "Well, his worries are not empty."
With her eyes closed she continued to speak, "Ever since you arrived at Aeloria, the only thing you have been interested in is your return to the Royal court."
"There hasn't been a day where you cared about your family," she opened her eyes and stared right at him like she was trying to see through his intentions. "In fact, even, I am also quite surprised that you want to treat your mother, given that you have been blaming her for your situation all these months."
"Anyone with eyes can see that you have been looking for an opportunity to seize the throne," Wistoria stated with a cold expression. "Damien, are you sure that you are doing this for your mother and not for your foolish ambition?"
Her question brought a surge of anger in his heart but at the same time, there was a trace of excitement.
As if sitting on the throne was his goal all along Damien knew that these were the emotions left behind by his predecessors.
He didn't desire the throne.
"Of course not," Damien stared back at Wistoria, with his hand pressed against his heart, he said, "I don't know what kind of person, I am in your eyes and the others but I will never use the life of my mother to gain power. I might be a bastard in everyone's eyes but I am not going to stoop so low."
"As a doctor, my ambition is not the throne but saving the lives of as many people as I can," Damien said with determination in his eyes. "For me, the smiles of those who I save are worth more than the throne."
"Spoken like a true doctor," said Dan as he clapped his hands. "I knew you had it in you, host."
Damien ignored him as he continued to look at Wistoria who smiled. Her lashes fluttered close as she lowered her gaze just a tad bit before raising her gaze. Her red eyes met with his blue ones before she said,
"Then there you have it. If your brother doesn't trust you then you need to show him that he can put his trust back in you."
She took a step forward and continued, "Show him your ambition and desires. I am sure if you do that, Henry will understand that you are indeed trying to save Lady Cecil and not using her illness to boost your fame."
"I also want to do it but I have no idea how to do it," he told her with a dark face.
"Then why don't you join a guild?" Wistoria suggested as if it was an obvious thing to do. Maybe it was, but Damien had no idea about these guilds.
His predecessor was more interested in getting rid of the Tartarite nails from his body that were embedded in seven different places than taking a look around the world or how it worked.
Most probably he believed that he would one day return to the Royal Court and wouldn't have any use of such information.
"A guild?"
"Yes, a guild. There are all kinds of adventure guilds located in the city, you can submit your information and let them assign a role to you," she explained. Though she looked at him as if he was an idiot who failed in second grade. "If you truly are determined then you should join the adventure guild. The more lives you save, the more your fame will rise.
I believe Henry will have no choice but to agree."
