Chapter 986 The Beginning of the End (5)
Lee Seng's eyes widened in surprise. Old Town was bustling with people. He quickly switched his form, drawing attention from Jeremy. Jeremy cracked a smile and poked his head into Lee Seng's view.
"You'll still draw attention looking like that," said Jeremy.
"You got some creds?" Lee Seng asked Jeremy. Jeremy gave Lee seng a confused look.
"Creds? What do you mean by that?"
"Money? Cash?"
"Yeah, but what're we gonna—"
Lee Seng whisked Jeremy away, entering the first business with clothes. He immediately moved into the place and snagged a winter coat and tried it on. He paid no attention to the lady eying him. Jeremy awkwardly moved over to Lee Seng, trying not to look embarrassed by how "brazenly" the person from his dreams acted.
"I like this one." Lee Seng turned and showed it off to Jeremy. It was a black oversized coat.
"How much is it?" Jeremy asked fishing for the tag. Lee Seng found it first and tugged on it. He turned and Jeremy took it. Jeremy gulped. "You have… expensive taste."
"C'mon, it fits the vibe."
"Yeah, but we aren't for this…" Jeremy whispered. The door rang and the worker greeted the customer. Lee Seng watched as Mai entered the place.
"Is that—" Lee Seng began to ask when Jeremy whisked him over to another section of the clothes shop.
"You wanted to look for, uh… undergarments, right? It's over here." Jeremy patted Lee Seng and pointed at it. Lee Seng turned to follow where Mai was going, but Jeremy immediately turned him away. Jeremy whispered quietly to Lee Seng, "Act like you're shopping. Don't draw any attention to yourself. She'll go ballistic if she knows I'm following her around."
"I thought that was pretty clear from the last interaction." Lee Seng whispered.
"How about this one?" Jeremy grabbed a pair of tidy whities. Lee Seng's face immediately scrunched at the thought of putting something so… tight on his package.
"Yeah, no." Lee Seng shook his head.
"Excuse me, ma'am. Do you have anything smaller than this?" Mai asked. The worker turned and looked at the top Mai had picked out.
"I'll have to check the back. Give me a moment." The worker answered. Mai nodded and gave her a small fake smile. She returned to perusing around the store, picking any items that would be work for now.
Lee Seng moved past the undergarments and over to some t-shirts. He looked at the clothes and shook his head. All of the clothes weren't in his style. They had logos, images, or even text on them.
"Man, no wonder why Dad had so much of this… It was good back then." Lee Seng whispered to himself.
"I did find something in a smaller size. Will this do, ma'am?" The worker asked Mai. Lee Seng peeked over and watched. Mai nodded and gave another fake smile. She thanked the worker and continued on her way.
"Why don't we pay for your coat and wait outside?" Jeremy suggested.
"What're you gonna do now? I still don't understand what you meant by 'one must understand pain.'" Lee Seng asked. Jeremy smiled and simply turned away. Lee Seng followed after Jeremy, taking the coat off and allowing the worker to scan it. Jeremy paid for the overpriced coat and thanked the worker before exiting the building. Lee Seng tore the tag off and gave a polite bow to the worker before following.
"What're we doing out here?" Lee Seng asked, slipping his coat on. Jeremy moved over to the nearest empty bench and sat on it. Lee Seng stood next to him, waiting for an answer.
"Sit." Jeremy pulled Lee Seng down. Lee Seng flew down into his seat in surprise. Jeremy had some strength to him. Lee Seng sucked in the cold winter air and closed his eyes. Old Town had a different feel to it when it was bustling. He began to wonder why, when Jeremy's voice broke him out of his trance. "It's time."
"Hm?" Lee Seng turned to look at Jeremy. Jeremy was looking past Lee Seng. The door opened and that's when Lee Seng felt it. A familiar hunger. He began to turn when Jeremy stood up and walked straight over to Mai.
"There you are." Jeremy spoke loudly. Mai looked up and noticed it was Jeremy. Lee Seng's body began to flicker, fading back to the sidelines as a ghost. The coat dropped through him, hitting the bench and spilling onto the floor. "I've been looking all over for you."
"What do you want now?" Mai asked. She moved past Jeremy and headed towards Lee Seng. Jeremy spun on his heels and followed after Mai. "Is there anything else you need to tell me? We just spoke earlier."
"You know I can't allow you to do that." Jeremy answered.
"I don't care. Tell the Doctor that. I want to live my life as humanly possible before I die. No one will take away my right." Mai turned and pointed her finger at Jeremy.
"You already know we signed away our right to be human when we entered that lab for money." Jeremy's eyes grew dark. The red glow behind the sunglasses faded and Lee Seng could feel the energy growing in Mai. "It wasn't a request for you to come back. You have to."
Jeremy grabbed Mai and she immediately made a scene. The people around began to turn to see what was happening. A Caucasian man was grabbing at an Asian woman. Lee Seng could guess how this would go down in the books. He began to stand when Mai released a burst of energy outwards. The windows all exploded and people began to freak out.
Mai pushed Jeremy away with ease, watching him hit the ground and slide away from her. She turned and ran. Jeremy stood up and pointed at Mai.
"Get her!" Jeremy shouted.
"I'm just a—" Lee Seng began to say when his form changed, again. He grabbed the coat and chased after Mai. Mai looked behind her, noticing someone else was chasing after her. She turned and mouthed something at Lee Seng. Lee Seng's body shook for a moment, following the silent order Mai had spoken. Lee Seng came to a stop for just a second before breaking it.
Lee seng continued after Mai, zooming past people. Mai turned to look and noticed Lee Seng was still after her. She cursed under her breath and pushed past a couple. She turned left down the street as Lee Seng approached.
"Can I even use my abilities in this state?" Lee Seng whispered as he turned the street. An elongated arm flew out at Lee Seng, knocking him to the ground. Lee Seng's head knocked against the cold concrete. He groaned in pain, jumping to his feet and watching people freak out about what they were seeing.
Lee Seng growled, letting out flames as people came over to check if he was okay. Lee Seng blinked, scaring the group and reappearing on Mai's tail.
"C'mon, Number 1! Don't do this!" Lee Seng shouted. Mai's eyes widened as she pushed further.
'How does he know that?' Mai asked herself. She turned, ready to attack the stranger chasing her when she saw nothing. She slowed, whipping her head around to check her surroundings. 'Where is he? Where's that guy? Is he just a distraction? Is Jeremy coming for me?'
Lee Seng grabbed Mai and spun her around, realizing too late that he had made the wrong choice. Mai's stored up energy released, destroying everything around her. Lee Seng cursed, opening his free hand and fighting to stop the explosion.
"Is this what it was like with Biohumans before the serum?!?" Lee Seng groaned. Mai socked Lee Seng across the face before running. She didn't care about what she had done. Lee Seng stuck his other hand out and lifted both of his hands up. The buildings around him were starting to fall and people were panicking.
"This is a pain in the ass!" Lee Seng complained in Fox tongue. He moved his hands together, pushing the cosmic energy outwards. He grunted as he altered the energy, forcing everything to go back to the way it was. "I can't mend the damn things together!"
Jeremy zoomed past Lee Seng, giving him a small salute of acknowledgment.
"You're going to leave me here?!?" Lee Seng screamed in English.
"This is what you're meant to do!" Jeremy shouted. Lee Seng cursed and slammed his hands together, holding the entire place in a bubble. Cars, people, debris and the broken buildings all began to float. Panic rose to an all time high as Lee Seng scrawled some runes.
"Okay, okay. You know what to do. Just… fix everything!" Lee Seng finished the runes and slashed it. The runes exploded outwards, filling the entire space. Lee Seng stuck his hands out into the sky and sucked in a sharp breath. He balled his fists and pulled downwards, listening to cars hit the ground. Sirens went off as buildings and streets pieced themselves back together. People landed on the ground, gently as Lee Seng turned and disappeared.
