Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Juliet Karenina.
No, starting today, Rubetria Diollus.
I’ve lived a busy 24/7/365 life in the other world, but I’ve never felt tired.
The type of person who enjoys a busy life and hates wasting time. Since I have crossed a river of no return anyway, it means that yesterday is enough for me to drag on.
In order to live as Rubette in the future, and to pay off the debt I owe to Rubette, I had to change this beggar’s life unconditionally, and I couldn’t waste a moment doing that.
‘The good news is that Rubette is quite well-informed.’
Having spent most of her time in her room without going out of the house, she only read all day.
She studied hard because she didn’t want to hear that she was a nuisance to the family.
‘She’s learned everything a noble lady wouldn’t have had to learn in-depth.’
It wasn’t that she was passionate about his studies, but that she had time to spare.
There was no book left unread regarding politics, economy, society, and culture, and she went around the world by reading the daily newspaper.
I’ve never been in a social world properly in my life, but I know a bit about social manners and dancing.
‘What you studied hard, I will use it well. For you.’
After giving a brief thanks to Rubette inwardly, I thought.
‘First of all.’
I’m fired up.
‘To break down the crazy hierarchy of this house that Molga Diollus is dominating.’
All the employees of this family are on her side, and my two older brothers, who had been raised by Molga since they were children, knew nothing about her.
The only person who can help me is my father, but unfortunately, he had some problems.
‘He’s out of his mind, but he’s alive, living against his will because he can’t afford to die.’
My father, Duke Diollus VIII. Leonard Diollus.
He was quite a romantic man in good words, but in bad words, he couldn’t be more irresponsible.
The tragedy began when his beloved Duchess Diollus, that is, Rubette’s biological mother, died when she was four.
After her mother’s death, her father became completely apathetic, abandoning all his duties as head of the house, so he lived just breathing.
He stays in his room 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and only drinks alcohol. Even though we live under the same roof, to see his face is as hard as picking stars.
Anyway, for that reason, 10 years ago, the three young siblings were almost raised in Molga’s hands.
‘Well, that doesn’t mean that the father was ignorant of his children at all, but…’
To put it bluntly, the duke was a father who knew how to hand out an unlimited black card for his only daughter to have a party with her friends on her birthday, even if he didn’t communicate with her.
In the other world, I used to feel tired of being loved not only by my family but by everyone, so I would rather welcome such a father…
‘But the real Rubette needed love and attention.’
He is even destined to die at the age of 40 after spending time drinking with his daughter.
“My lady, do you have no appetite?”
“Ah.”
After thinking for a while, I suddenly came to my senses.
The maid, Rebecca, with her gray hair neatly tied in a bundle, looked worried next to the breakfast table set up in the room.
‘Rebecca…’
As I searched for my memories, I saw a different little girl in front of me.
Among the duke’s servants who tolerated the abuses of devils inflicted on Rubette, this gentle maid was the only one who took care of the Rubette and condoned the devils’ abuse…
‘I’m mad.’
At the terrible commotion that happened on Rubette’s 16th birthday—I don’t want to think about it, I don’t want to talk about it—she could no longer pretend to be ignorant of the abuse inflicted on Rubette. So she bravely decided to accuse the father, the duke.
That was the beginning of the tragedy.
Malga noticed it ahead of time and caught Rebecca and beat her.
Molga’s voice whispered as she looked at Rebecca, who was gasping for breath.
“You mean girl. You should be grateful that Lillia and Ricky even invited their friends to wish you a happy birthday. Are you trying to rattle it out over some mischief?”
“G-Grandma. I-I didn’t mean to…”
“Why do you have to lie? Didn’t you tell this stupid maid what happened that day?”
“I was only talking to Rebecca. I didn’t mean to tell my father…”
“I just managed to catch this maid going to your father’s room, what’s the deal with that?”
“I-I’m sorry…”
Rebecca was locked up in solitary confinement.
“Grandma, please show me Rebecca. It’s my fault. I made a mistake…”
Molga, who came to Rubette after three days, smiled and showed Rebecca, but…
“Re-Rebecca…?”
She was already dead. She endured three days and three nights without treatment, and she did not drink a sip of water.
“That girl died pitifully because you were talking nonsense.”
Molga warned Rubette, who was shocked to see a carriage carrying a body covered in straw.
“Our good Rubetria. I don’t want to see people dying for nothing, so you should try to behave better in the future.”
Rubette, who had been daunted by continued abuse, thought.
‘Yes… I was acting like an idiot, so Rebecca died. I should have just acted like a dead mouse, just like I did until now…’
Eventually, with Rebecca’s death, Rubette closed her mouth more and became more withdrawn. It was absolutely insane.
“My lady…”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I was thinking of something else.”
Rebecca’s eyes widened at my reply.
“Did your memory come back?”
“Huh? Aah…”
The young lady who was respectful as if she had never seen her for the first time yesterday had returned friendly in one day, so Rebecca seemed to think that her spirit that had left the house had just returned.
Well, it wasn’t wrong. I smiled and nodded.
“When I woke up from a deep sleep, I felt refreshed. Thank you for your concern.”
“Ugh, I’m glad. Today, I purposely asked the chef to prepare a bunch of dishes that you like, so eat a lot.”
“Yes…”
I squinted across the terrifying table.
A whole roasted turkey was placed in the middle, and on the plate right in front of me were two thick slices of lamb, a salmon steak next to it, and a half glass of white wine to accompany it.
Land, sea, and air in one place? For the breakfast menu at 9:30 am?
‘Are you kidding me?’
It was absurd, but I’m now Rubette, the one who had always eaten like this. Who would I blame?
“That, Rebecca.”
“When you’re done with your meal, I’ll bring you a butter bun with plenty of blueberry compote. It’s a compote made with fresh blueberries brought in yesterday from Camilla Farm.”
“Yes, I see…”
“Oh! What’s with your expression? Are you not in the mood for jam on your bread today? How about a chocolate cake full of macarons?”
Rebecca winked with a pleasant gesture like shooting a pistol.
Her tearful effort of deliberately pretending to be brighter than usual for the sake of the girl who even made a suicidal commotion and would feel depressed was revealed.
But that’s not the problem.
I appreciate Rebecca’s consideration for preparing a magnificent meal in the morning, but I declined by waving my hand.
“I’m sorry, but pass it all on. Since throwing it would be a waste, you can take and eat it.”
“Pardon? You’re not going to eat breakfast?”
I rose from my seat and spoke slowly, warming up.
“I’m going to lose weight from today.”
“…”
I looked back at Rebecca, who was not answering. With a strange expression on her face, she blinked her gray eyes and nodded in a flustered manner.
I could clearly see her thinking, “How many days, no, hours, our lady’s short-lived diet will last…”
“I see. I’ll leave it for now, so let me know if you’re hungry later.”
“That won’t happen. I’m not saying I’m going to starve, but I’m going to adjust my diet.”
“Adjust your diet?”
“Yes. Starting today, I’m going to start exercising on an empty stomach for an hour in the morning. So have breakfast ready in my room at 9:30 after the workout. The menu is half an apple and a plate of oatmeal.”
“P-Pardon?”
“Do you have any paper and pen? Can you write it down?”
Rebecca, who was blinking her big eyes, soon rummaged in the front pocket of her maid suit and took out a small notebook and a pen.
I started talking again.
“Breakfast is at 9:30. Half an apple and a plate of oatmeal.”
“Y-Yes!”
“Lunch is at 1 pm. Bring the regular main dish from the restaurant every day, but tell the chef not to season it. Here…”
I pointed to the lamb and salmon steak on the table.
“Do not put sauce on this kind of steak.”
Next up is the giant turkey.
“Don’t season poultry dishes.”
“Then it wouldn’t taste good, would it?”
“it’s okay. How can you lose weight while eating all the delicious things?”
“Well, that’s true, but…”
Despite her embarrassment, Rebecca eagerly wrote down my words in her notebook.
“And we only need one menu, don’t overdo it like this, and don’t add wine. Foods containing flour are completely blocked. And since I won’t be eating bread, we don’t need this big bottle…!”
As I spread my arms out to express the enormity, I hated it.
“…of compote to be refilled every week.”
I brought a pack of snacks that I had thrown roughly behind the bed. Rubette’s snacks that were wrapped and sealed in a tablecloth.
Ttok.
There was a rustling sound as I laid it down at Rebecca’s feet.
“Wh-What’s this?”
“The snack that I was busy eating every minute after hiding it. Throw it all away.”
