Chapter 176: 3rd Checkpoint
Chapter 176: 3rd Checkpoint
*BAM!*
The bunch of younger worm-like creatures was breaching out of the tunnel's exit just like how the zombies did back at the entrance they dug.
"Fire all the Decimators at the tunnel, now!" Satella gives out the order without hesitation. In this situation, the tunnel's integrity is no longer their concern as long they can protect themselves.
Warheads were fired at the tunnel where the creatures were pouring out. An explosion followed after an explosion, along with blood and flesh splattered everywhere. It continued for quite a while until there's no longer any sound coming from the collapsed tunnel.
With the tunnel now collapsed, the group now has no other choice but to continue forward. Their only option to return to the Wind Base is through another entrance, about 20 miles away or through the woods.
Using the woods to return won't be a problem, but that's where the zombies heavily infested. Unless they're well prepared, the zombies could possibly swallow them in less than an hour after entering.
"What now?" Satella asked while walking over to the military truck. Although the tunnel's collapse would bring them more inconveniences in the future, she still feels it was a good trade for their current safety.
She remembered that in their previous report, it was said that the truck was in pristine condition. But looking at it right now, it was nowhere close to how it was stated. At least 30% of the military truck's frame was either damaged or wrecked to the point a repair is needed.
And making thing worst, almost all of them here comes from the Soldier Cloning Program. They're an excellent soldier in battle, but not much in other works. Some of them even had a problem preparing food.
"We'll ignore the fact this vehicle is partially damaged. It was caused by ourselves anyway when we're escaping from the monsters. Most importantly, where are we right now? How far are we from our destination?" Zhang Qin Feng asked.
"10 miles to our third stop. A total of 35 miles to our destination." Satella answered.
"Then, let's not waste any time. Our resources are limited. Let's get there earlier than our expected time, and hopefully, there are some people there that we can use." Zhang Qin Feng said while giving Satella a hug. He knew that his disappearance has made her worried sick.
"Let us continue! We'll have to get to our third stop before the sunset!" Satella ordered. This time, their travel was smoother than before. Although it was pretty packed on the back of the military truck, it was still good enough to fit 33 soldiers.
Furthermore, they're not here for a picnic but an expedition. Comfort was the last thing in their mind.
Traveling on a vehicle has its perks when it comes to speed. The Atom Battery Pack that Alex and the others fitted into the truck was enough to bring everyone to their third stop. Although they're not driving at the top speed, it was still a tirelessly running vehicle.
Those that on duty to fortify the building immediately get down from the military truck and get their work done. As for Satella, she's waiting for Zhang Qin Feng to explain everything to her. Since there was nothing much for him to keep secret, Zhang Qin Feng brought everything up, so Satella, Alex, and Queenie have an idea of what they're going to face.
"Worm-like creatures? Those that pouring out from the tunnel earlier was just the babies?" Satella was shocked. If those slithering worms about the size of an adult were just the younglings, then how gigantic would the adult worm be?
The more she listened to Zhang Qin Feng's explanation, the further it made her worried. It never crossed her mind before Zhang Qin Feng almost died from the worm's attack on his disappearance. Knowing that there are close to a thousand worms slithering in the soil, they're standing right now only made it worst.
For the first time in her life, she wished that she had a few containers of the Wolfram Light created by the twins to burn all these worms into cinders.
This also worries them if their plan to take over the facility for their new Wind Base won't go as smoothly as they think. Through the floorplan they got before, that facility also had its own underground chamber for agriculture purposes.
If it was taken over by these worms, then all their effort for going there would be for naught.
"Don't worry. The situation might not be as serious as we think. The existence will indeed be a problem to us, but try to think… If these things really spawn as fast as we thought, won't the entire area of Shangwen be under their control right now?"
"Would the cloning shelter still in operation if the worms are that deadly? In my opinion, their aggression should be due to me stumbling across their nest. We can't leave them alone, but it is not our responsibility to destroy them for now. As long we keep them in control, then it won't take too long before we reserve enough firepower to attack them."
"What we need to do now is to quickly get to the facility as soon as possible, get new survivors into our ranks, and start transporting everyone else over here." Zhang Qin Feng said.
"You're correct. It's pointless for us to be bothered with something we cannot handle right now." Satella nodded. There's a hint of rationality behind Zhang Qin Feng's words.
"Boss!" a soldier came to the military truck and gave the door a knock.
"Yes?" Alex answered the soldier's call. He's wondering why the soldier looked so happy for reporting back to them.
"The building's cleanup is done. There's only minor damage, so the fortification process went on smoother than we have thought. By the way, we found something that the boss might love it." the soldier took the item out from his bag and passed it over to Alex.
"What's that?" Satella asked. It was something like a flat tablet computer used back in Zhang Qin Feng's world.
