Chapter 29: 029 All thanks to good looks
"Oh, God."
Pash was stunned, completely stunned, with only one thought in his entire brain:
Incredible!
The game opened with a seventy-five-yard long march run for a touchdown to take the lead; it ended with a sixty-seven-yard ground offensive touchdown to kill the game.
A total of 287 yards advanced on the ground for the entire game.
Dominating the scene.
Shining throughout the game.
What, exactly, was going on?
Last season, Crimson Tide Storm’s Derrick Henry shocked the NCAA with an astounding thirty-six touchdown runs, and even though everyone knew the University of Alabama has always been strong in the running back department, they were still impressed by Henry. With Henry turning pro, how Saban would coach the team became the biggest question of the new season.
Yet, no one expected that a completely unfamiliar face would emerge in the style of Adrian Peterson, sweeping through the field like a tornado.
Of course, this was an intrasquad scrimmage, not enough to prove much, and they still needed to be patient, there was no need to rush to conclusions.
But—
Pash’s jaw was so agape it seemed it might not snap back into place.
"Li."
"Is this number twenty-three’s name... Li. Wei?"
"Li Wei?"
"No star rating in high school, he is a player from a mixed martial arts background who only registered as a Football player for the first time during spring training camp."
"Jesus Christ!"
As he reviewed the information, the more he read, the more shocked he became. It seemed his jaw wouldn’t return to normal anytime soon. Pash even began to suspect he was developing presbyopia prematurely.
Could all of this really be possible?
"And he is Chinese?"
"So, is he some kind of Monkey King that leaped out from a crack in a rock? Making a huge scene in his debut, stirring up a Crimson Tide Storm at the University of Alabama."
"Wow! I mean, wow!"
"Impressive."
Pash found himself at a loss for words. No language could express the shock and awe he felt at the moment. His brain had shut down, turning him into a relentless exclamation machine.
"It’s the fourth quarter, with three minutes and twenty-seven seconds remaining. The Red Team still has a chance; they can still turn the tide, but the question is, does the high school quarterback Hertz of the Red Team have the determination, does he know what to do?"
"College Football is just too harsh for an eighteen-year-old high school student."
"That’s why it’s even more apparent how outstanding number twenty-three is. Li Wei, ladies and gentlemen, let’s remember this name. He might just be the most noteworthy player in this year’s Crimson Tide Storm."
Boom!
The entire stadium erupted, and Pash had to raise his voice to convey his commentary amid the tumult and frenzy of Bryant Denny Stadium, but obviously, the enthusiasm of the audience was far from over.
Who could resist such a game?
Then—
The game ended without any suspense.
Just as Pash said, without the coaches setting up tactics, Hertz, as a quarterback, was still too green and immature, including the Red Team’s Offensive group with Jacobs and Clark, all of whom were newcomers and didn’t understand tactics or the game well enough to find a way to counterattack.
The White Team’s Defensive group was as unstoppable as a hurricane, completely suppressing the Red Team.
The main team not only failed to score, but they also gave the substitute team another opportunity to attack, this time the substitute team displaying unmatched steadiness and calm.
They didn’t rush to score touchdowns to extend the lead, but instead methodically pressed forward on the ground to consume game time, like seasoned professional players.
Saban and Burns exchanged glances once more. Could this have been Beteman’s idea?
Both of them had the corners of their mouths turning up, it seemed they had the same idea and came to a consensus.
The reserve team completely took the initiative and managed to get two first downs through passes, unbelievably under the full pressure of the opposing defensive group. Thanks to the strong ground advancement, the passing offense also opened up the situation.
At last, Beteman connected with number one Foster to score another touchdown, this time through a passing play, and thoroughly put the game out of reach.
"3:21".
The White Team, dressed in away jerseys of the Crimson Tide Storm, won by a large margin.
The game ended.
Bryant Denny Stadium turned into an ocean, roaring into life.
The reserve team players hugged, high-fived, and shoulder-bumped each other, celebrating the victory.
Even though it was just an intra-squad scrimmage, it served as a comprehensive exam for the team during spring camp; the reserve team needed such a shining moment to prove themselves.
Beteman was beside himself with joy, immediately embracing Li Wei tightly, repeatedly asking, "Did we win? Did we win? Did we really win? Is this really happening? God, this isn’t a dream, is it?"
Li Wei took off his helmet, patting Beteman’s helmet, "We won."
Beteman, "Ah! Ahhh!" He threw his arms up and jumped on the spot, as if on a trampoline, leaping high into the air.
Just then—
Ah!
A scream came from the stands behind them, so frenzied and piercing that a group of players all reflexively looked back.
Then they saw three girls crowded together, their smiles fully blooming, eyes brimming with love, screaming one after another.
"Hey, handsome!"
Just then, Humphrey came over to shake hands with Li Wei, his face radiating joy as he waved to the stands, "Hey, beauties!"
The games of the Crimson Tide Storm weren’t only attended by men; for the town’s residents and university students, it was a communal event for all—men, women, young, and old alike—and naturally included the young college girls, whose enthusiasm and frenzy were second to none.
Consequently, the bold and passionate girl waved off Humphrey, vigorously shaking her head, "No, not you, but the one next to you, number twenty-three. Hey, that’s right, you, handsome! What’s your name?"
Suddenly, the other boys started to tease.
Unbothered, Humphrey tossed his head proudly, "You don’t appreciate my charm; that’s your loss. It turns out you like this type. This is Li Wei, my brother."
"The brother you steamrolled again and again?" someone teased from the side.
Ha ha.
Laughter erupted.
In the midst of the chaos, Li Wei spread his hands: Why does no one seem to care when the concerned party is right here?
A gentle breeze blew, and the setting sun filled the sky.
The dazzling sunset reflected off Li Wei’s sweat-drenched face. His features, which lacked the fierceness of battle, instead radiated an air of scholarship. Even his wet hair glinted under the sunset, and his expression was captivating.
He didn’t seem particularly striking with his helmet on, but once he took it off and you got a closer look, his looks easily stood out, and it was no wonder the girls screamed.
"Hey, Li Wei, catch."
The bold and passionate girl folded a paper airplane and threw it, which fluttered into Li Wei’s arms. Then with a "call me" gesture, she and her giggling friends turned and left.
Those nearby were hardly inferior—
Bearing the brunt.
Roars and laughter filled the air, and Li Wei felt his ears might go deaf.
Then Allen’s voice came from behind, "Now we’re in trouble. He doesn’t just crush us with skill; he’s also way ahead in looks. The girls at the University of Alabama only have eyes for Li Wei now; there’s no room for us to survive."
"Guys, let’s go teach this guy a lesson!"
Boom!
