Chapter 59 The Wailing River Of Lost Souls
As soon as a massive ink-like droplet formed, it dropped onto the men and created a tidal wave.
"SHREEEIIIIIIIIEEEKKK!"
"KEAAAARRRKKK!
"MYAAAAAKIEIEIEIE!
Leon covered his ears when the souls of the dead wailed at full volume. When he originally heard it, there were only human shrieks. Now there were beasts as well!
The ghostly white beasts struggled to stand as black tar weaved through their fur and scales.
"AGHHHHHHHHHH!"
A crocodile creature snapped its jaws on a man's leg, making him scream in pain, and performed a death roll to drag him into the Styx.
"GET OFF ME! LET ME GO!"
"NO! GET OFF!"
Other beasts joined the fray and slowly moved to men that the human souls trapped by grabbing their ankles.
Leon saw some familiar faces among them. They were beasts from the Inexpensiveco!
"HELP! GIVE ME A HAND!" A man wearing shorts and an Acapulco shirt yelled while reaching for another.
"FUCK THAT, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN!" The second man, who was hairy and shirtless, gruffed.
"THEN YOU'RE DYING WITH ME!" The first declared, "ROARING SUN!"
He shot a fireball in retaliation at the man, who quickly jumped to dodge out of the way.
"AgHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhH!
A group of male survivors got hit and instantly lit on fire. They ran around, setting flames to everything they touched.
Candidates used a flurry of attacks to keep them away.
"LET ME GO! NO!" The hairy man yelled. He had ducked the fireball, but the sludge captured his ankle, and screeching souls began pulling him in.
"SHREEEIIIIIIIIEEEKKK!"
The stuck man shot a lightning bolt at the army of ghostly souls, temporarily freeing himself. However, a familiar face shot out and grabbed his other leg. It was the man he let die.
"L-LET GO, YOU FREAK! DYING WAS YOUR FAULT!" He screamed.
However, the man didn't let go.
To the candidate's horror, the man didn't have color. He had already died, converted into a soul, and was added to the army in the river!
"W-WAIT, WAIT! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!" He screamed as another soul grabbed his other ankle.
He fell to the ground with shakey legs.
"NO! PLEASE NO!" The man screamed.
"SHREEEIIIIIIIIEEEKKK!"
The souls didn't listen. They pulled him deeper into the sludge as he desperately used his power against them.
When his lighting stopped affecting them, the hairy man rolled onto his stomach and tried grabbing other people's ankles.
"GET OFF!" A gruff man yelled at full volume.
"P-PLEASE, H-HELP M-ME!"
"NO!"
The gruff man soccer punted the man in the face. His head hit the ground, coughing up blood.
Unable to resist, the souls dragged him into the Styx, where he would remain for eternity.
Lindy's powers grew as they consumed lives. Phlegethon grew from the blood of its victims; Styx built her an army ready to do her bidding.
So everyone she trapped in the Styx would become more hands to pull her victims into the tar-like river.
Massive snakes and monsters crawled through the gunk to reach the new victims and devour the caught men, proving that pulling wasn't the only threat to those caught.
Lindy truly had one of the most brutal powers in existence.
Leon's only emotion when watching the horrifying scene below him was [pride]. If he could see Lindy, he would give her the most loving gaze imaginable.
Feeling left out, Caitlyn geared up to release one of her other unlocked attacks. However, a commotion had broken out in the distance.
The barrier was released the second Styx dropped. It repaired itself constantly when attacks hit it, draining exorbitant amounts of mana. So she released it as fast as possible.
Boom!
A man shot a magic rocket launcher and hit one of the moving trucks with the survivors.
The truck immediately spun out of control and lit on fire, crashing into one of the buses and popping a tire.
Kazz instantly acted, jumping onto the moving truck's hood on all fours with ghostly speed.
The tigress smashed through the window with her fist, grabbed it, and threw it into the west wall of wreckage.
A female humanoid with blue skin was dozing off, nearly unconscious.
Kazz's hands turned into tiger claws, cut the seatbelt, tore her claws into the woman's shoulders, and threw her out of the vehicle.
A fraction of a second after jumping off, the truck exploded, killing a group of forty survivors.
The main role of the retrieval team was to protect the drivers, not the buses and trucks. So Kazz was ready to perform the action the second trouble occurred.
The man with the launcher fired another attack.
Caitlyn's hand switched direction, and a massive pillar of light shot from the sky, creating a wall that incinerated the attack mid-way to the busses.
The man fell into the Styx after the shot and began drowning.
Manka slithered up to the existing bus and hit the top of it with her fist, causing everyone to scream when the bus shook.
Once the metal cracked, she grabbed two sides and pried the two halves apart, ripping the bus in half with her surreal strength!
Everyone was perplexed and happy to leave the bus.
However, they were staring at a massive snake, eight-foot tall, with a wall of intricate muscles capable of ripping a bus in half!
They stood in fear at the sight.
"What's scarier? True beauty or dying, you fuckin' pussies?" Manka yelled aggressively, "Get out and don't start running! Or stay on the bus and die. It's not my job to care!"
After saying those words, she slithered to join the other team members. The women all filed out immediately, helping each other down.
"Let's go to them!" Tricksie yelled, "We need to get them a new bus!"
Leon's eyes widened in confusion. A new bus?
Before he could comprehend the situation, the group hit 140 mph to the crash sight, where Manka had just ripped the bus in half.
"Fly low! Ten feet from the ground." Tricksie yelled.
"Kay, bitch!" Caitlyn snapped while lowering her altitude.
When the group got close, Tricksie pulled a toy bus out and tossed it to the ground. In a surreal display, the toy bus increased in size as it hit the ground.
Boom! A screeching sound filled the air as the bus adjusted to the impact.
"Try starting it! Go!" Leon yelled.
"Try starting them! Go!" Caitlyn echoed. His voice was too low for anyone to hear, so his loving partner immediately voiced his commands.
Quinn shot into action, immediately starting the vehicle. It had a shaky starting but ran after a few attempts to start the battery.
It was an electric vehicle, so Leon couldn't hear whether it was running.
"REVERSAL!" Cynthia yelled.
A massive spear that enlarged mid-travel was sucked into a black warp gate and exited a white one right next to it.
It immediately shot back to the original location and impaled the man, sending himself and multiple other people it skewered into the [Wailing River].
The spear was part of a power that turned any projectile he threw or shot into a bullet.
It was a clever power that could turn a stone throw into a deadly weapon. Unfortunately for them, the elvish woman was far more skilled in using her nuanced power.
Leon watched the scene with admiration. He knew that Cynthia's power wasn't simple reversal magic.
The woman used spatial magic!
Cynthia had other magic powers native to the elvish people. So she chose something creative to magnify her magic. She was now multi-purpose, and it fascinated him.
"EARTH WALL!"
A massive dirt wall shot up to block a flurry of machine gun fire and bullets.
Most of the men asked for powers relating to conventional weapons, as it was something that represented power, and they knew.
While they weren't very useful for killing superhumans or beasts, they could destroy the trucks!
Leon looked down and found that a candidate from the bus erected it right before people started loading into the new bus.
"Split the forces!" Leon ordered, "Eleven retrieval team trucks and the survivor truck, take the moving buses! Now!"
Caitlyn barked his order, and the group complied.
The buses started driving, and over half of the pickup trucks with the defense and attack mages moved forward.
It wasn't ideal for splitting the groups because it decreased communication and coordination between the dedicated attack and defense personnel.
However, getting the candidates to safety was a priority. He kept three in tow because one bus was down, and hundreds of survivors were locked into the mess.
"FASTER!"
Men had naturally moved around the Styx, which no longer had souls and was just liquid. While it was large, so was the road, so it was easy to navigate for those on the east side.
The men charged at speeds far faster than the vehicles.
"Hurry!" A black human woman with professionally braided cornrows yelled.
Her name was Shawna, and she was the one who erected the earth barrier.
With impressive situational awareness and authority, she took control of the candidates and helped candidates into the bus. Leon was impressed and noted that he should meet her later.
"I want it." Kira pouted in the back of the retrieval truck, moving toward the sanctuary.
Minx leaned back and ignored the blonde. She didn't know what she was talking about and was preoccupied with a thought that left a wild look in her eye.
She turned to Mindy, who immediately tried turning away.
"Hey, sis. I'll make you a bet that Mr. Psychopath will see the value in my power if I take out a horde of those men with it." She mused, "What would you want in compensation?"
"S-Sissy, that's not a good idea…." Mindy said with trembling eyes.
"Why? I'll ask for something reasonable." Minx replied with a smooth voice, "And it's not like he has much choice. He needs the help."
"N-No, he will see value in it, Sissy." The little woman said nervously while tugging on her pink hair, "But he'll see value by [default], and he won't ever appreciate you going against his orders. So it'll backfire twice."
Minx frowned. "He's smart, then."
Mindy's white ears perked up, hoping her sister would drop the subject.
"I want it. I want it so bad!" Kira pouted while curling her blonde hair.
"So what would make a good 50/50 bet?" Minx asked with a determined look in her vibrant amethyst eyes.
"Sissy…." Mindy whispered, "The only bet I can think of is whether he'll be partially grateful. But even if he doesn't kill you, his wifey destroyed the city around you single-handedly and she's… protective. So she might kill you before you even talk to him."
Minx's eyes widened in shock as she looked around her.
"Wait, the gods didn't do this?" She asked.
"No… the gods showed up to clear the wreckage…. That's why there's this road and you shouldn't gamble with these odds." Mindy said with drooping ears.
"She's not even using it to its potential!" Kira complained.
"How. Exciting!" Minx exclaimed, ignoring the blonde with madness flickering in her eyes. They literally glowed in a surreal and demonic light.
"Hurry, Mindy! I'll hedge! Tell me what's worthy of his compensation!"
The woman's velvety cat ears were erect with excitement.
Mindy panicked. "No sissy!"
"I WANT IT!" Kira exclaimed. She stood up while driving and looked into the distance until she found her target.
Mindy panicked. "What are you doing, Kira!"
The blonde ignored her, reached her hand into the distance, and yelled at full volume.
"KLEPTO!"
Her body illuminated with a vibrant silver light, and she chuckled with madness in her eyes as streams of information poured into her head.
Then she scanned the area for her next targets.
