Chapter 53 Rescuing The Chief Ogre
[ System Notification: Pathways Unsealed ]
The moment the notification flashed, a strange, mournful sound echoed through the dungeon's cavernous walls—a soft, weeping cry reverberated in the eerie silence after the brutal fight.
All heads turned westward, where a dimly lit tunnel stretched into shadows. From its depths emerged a small, huddled figure, barely illuminated by the flickering greenish glow of the fungi-lined walls.
"Is that...crying?" Aria whispered while fixing her gaze on the tunnel.
"Odd place for a sob story," muttered Xyron, already unsheathing his greatsword.
His fingers itched to end what he assumed was another enemy. The figure slowly came into view, revealing a small, young ogre girl—no more than three feet tall.
Her head was lowered and her thick, brawny shoulders trembled as she wept, clutching a ragged piece of cloth.
"Hold on," August voiced while stepping in front of Xyron with a hand raised. "She's...different."
"Different?" Xyron scoffed in annoyance. "We're in a dungeon full of ogres, Aleman. They're all fair game."
"Just wait," August insisted while approaching the young ogre girl slowly with his staff lowered. He crouched down, making sure to keep his movements non-threatening. "Hey...are you okay?"
The girl looked up. Her large green eyes were filled with fear and sadness. She sniffled as her gaze darted between the players before finally settling on August. "You...you not here to hurt...Zora?"
"No," August said softly while shaking his head reassuringly. "We're here for...well, a different reason. Can you tell us why you're crying?"
After a moment of hesitation, the girl spoke with a trembling voice. "Bad ogres...they hurt Papa. They take him...because he no want big scary magic. He say it dangerous. Now...they want to wake the Ogre Lord..." She pointed toward the shadows while her little hand kept shaking. "They keep him there...locked up."
The group exchanged glances as a new system notification appeared:
[ System Notification: Dungeon Quest Initiated - Rescue the Chief and Prevent the Unsealing of the Ogre Lord. Objective: Defeat the renegade ogres and save the Ogre Chief. ]
Xyron groaned while rolling his eyes. "So what, we're rescuing a chief now? And stopping some kind of ogre apocalypse?"
"Sounds like it," Aria voiced with a look of resolve. "And if this Ogre Lord is as bad as she says, I think we're better off stopping him."
August glanced down at the young ogre girl. "Will you show us the way?"
Zora nodded vigorously as her small face lit up with a glimmer of hope. "Yes, yes! Follow Zora!"
As the group followed Zora through winding, narrow passages, the temperature in the cavern grew hotter.
Pools of bubbling lava appeared on either side of their path, casting an eerie orange glow on their faces. The journey wasn't easy; they encountered hostile ogre guards along the way, and every fight was a test of their stamina and teamwork. Continue reading at empire
One guard lunged at them from a hidden corner, swinging a spiky club. August reacted swiftly, sidestepping the attack and countering with a Hidden Strike. His dagger flashed as it struck deep into the ogre's side.
[ System Notification: -1100 HP ]
As the ogre staggered, Xyron seized the opportunity, slamming his greatsword into the creature's back, knocking it into a bubbling pool of lava with a sickening hiss. "Another one down," he muttered while scanning for the next threat.
"Look out!" Aria shouted, as two more ogres rushed toward them with rage-filled eyes.
She cast Ice Wall, creating a temporary barrier to slow their advance.
August switched to his staff, casting Lightning Bolt above the ogres. A bolt of lightning rained down, striking them with explosive force.
[ System Notification: Lightning Bolt Cast. Special Effect: Gravitational Anchor. ]
The ogres found themselves struggling under the heavy gravitational pull as their movements turned sluggish and disoriented.
August dashed in, delivering a Strike from behind, while Kelvor lunged in from the side, stabbing with poisoned daggers.
One by one, they managed to push through.
Zora guided them through twists and turns as each corner revealed more lava pits and treacherous ledges.
At one point, they crossed a perilous stone bridge, barely wide enough for one person at a time. The heat was unbearable and sweat dripped down their faces as they kept their eyes on the path.
Finally, they reached a narrow, elevated platform where the Ogre Chief was bound with thick, enchanted chains. His hulking form looked slumped and bruised.
Surrounding him were several renegade ogres, each more menacing than the last. They were led by a particularly massive ogre who wore a makeshift crown fashioned from bones and metal scraps.
[ System Notification: Sub-Boss Encounter - Renegade Ogre Commander. Level 32. ]
"Looks like we've found the ringleader," August voiced while gripping his staff.
The commander snarled, raising a massive warhammer. "Intruders! You no belong here. We end you...and then we wake Lord."
As the ogres advanced, Aria summoned a Healing Aura to keep everyone's health steady. August cast Lightning Bolt, aiming for the commander. The bolt struck true, slowing the ogre's movements.
Kelvor darted around, flanking the commander, but just as he moved in for an attack, the commander swung his Warhammer, forcing him back. "This guy's tough!" Kelvor shouted while narrowly dodging another swing.
August activated Shadow Dance, creating shadowy afterimages that confused the ogre commander. Using the distraction, he closed in and struck with Hidden Strike, reducing the commander's HP bit by bit.

The fight intensified as the platform began to quake. Small rocks crumbled into the lava below.
Zora cried out as one of the ogres swung at her, but August quickly moved in, blocking the attack with his dagger, causing him to slide backward from the brute force.
[ -150HP ]
Despite blocking the attack, he lost quite a bit of HP.
"Focus on the commander!" August shouted. "Take him down, and the others will fall!"
Xyron roared while charging forward and delivering a powerful overhead swing that collided with the commander's shoulder, slicing deep into it.
Aria cast Fireball, and a burst of flame engulfed the commander, weakening him further.
The other ogres retaliated. One of them managed to land a blow on Xyron that sent him staggering to the edge of the platform, nearly falling into the lava below. August lunged forward, grabbing Xyron's arm and pulling him back to safety.
"Careful," August muttered, as Xyron grunted in response.
With a final coordinated effort, they launched an all-out assault on the commander, overwhelming him with spells, strikes, and attacks.
At last, the commander's HP hit zero, and he collapsed. His body turned into particles and disappeared.
[ System Notification: Sub-Boss Defeated - Renegade Ogre Commander. ]
With the commander defeated, the remaining ogres faltered, allowing the group to finish them off. Once the battle was over, they hurried to free the Ogre Chief.
The chains dissolved as Aria cast a spell, releasing him.
The chief embraced his daughter, Zora, who had run to him with tears in her eyes. "Thank you," he rumbled with a gratitude-filled tone. "But we must hurry. The renegades... We must stop them from starting the ritual."
August nodded with a grim look. "Lead the way."
The Ogre Chief got on his feet and guided them through another set of winding tunnels.
They could feel the air thickening with dark magic as pulsating energy radiated from the heart of the dungeon.
After turning at the last corner, they arrived in a vast chamber where a group of ogres were chanting around a glowing rune on the floor.
The chief's face fell. "We are too late...the ritual has begun."
A new notification appeared:
[ System Notification: Final Objective - Stop the Awakening of the Ogre Lord. ]
