Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Whitney had been… bombastic.
That word perfectly described the girl's attitude throughout the entire time- and by that, Virah meant 2 minutes, - Virah had known her, Whitney was energetic, upbeat, and not afraid to say whatever was on her mind.
And a lot was going on in that mind of hers, and through only 2 minutes worth of talking, Whitney has said things about food, both for Pokemon and humans, hair related products, and why her Meowth was an annoying little shit.
"You get me?” That last topic has been what Whitney was focusing on right now.
Virah nodded, “I do,” no she doesn't, “I've heard that Meowths are uh, mischievous, a few owners have complained to me about items inside their house being out of place or even outright falling,”
Okay, maybe she does know a little bit about what Whitney was talking about. But only a little bit.
“Exactly!” Whitney snapped her fingers in excitement, her eyes bright with happiness for some reason, “Meowth is just so cute isn't he?~”
“I guess?” Virah eyed the cat in question and felt nothing but cold fear running down her spine when they made eye contact. She pointedly looked away, “uh, so… you want me to teach him Feint Attack?”
“Yep! It's so that I can finally deal with that annoying Magnemite of Calvin's,” Whitney looked at the guy in question- Calvin apparently, - with barely hidden disdain. “He's annoying,”
“I feel the same way,” Virah didn't, and this time, she was a hundred percent certain of her feelings. In fact, she never felt anything when it comes to the opposite gender and she's apathetic to them at best.
Whitney turned away from the Magnemite and its trainer, “by the way,” Virah hummed to say that she was listening, though Whitney would have continued even without it, “why are we in one of the battle courts?”
“Because I want to find an opponent,” Virah answered as she stretched.
“You want your Weedle to fight?” Whitney said the species of her Pokemon as if it tasted bitter.
“Nitro.” Virah corrected her, “and yep, he's more powerful than you think,”
“Yeah… I don't believe you,” Whitney replied with a frown.
“You will soon,” Virah retorted as she eyed a young boy staring at her nervously, it wasn't the one with the Pidgey but the Spearrow he had in his Pokeball would still be an annoying fight. Virah was confident that she'd win against him though, type advantage or not.
They locked eyes and Virah felt a tiny tingle at the back of her head, and she knew that her opponent would want to fight. And the boy must have felt the same way because his nervous look disappeared and he neared them calmly.
He thrust out a hand holding a Pokeball at her, “I challenge you to a Pokemon Battle!”
“Okay,” Virah wasn’t sure how to reply to such an enthusiastic declaration.
“Guess I'll be the referee?” Whitney did though and Virah nodded at her, the boy shortly following.
Soon, all three were on different parts of the court, with Virah and her opponent standing on opposite ends of the white box while Whitney placed herself directly in the middle, her Meowth lay by her feet, expression lazy and eyes drowsy.
Whitney, as the referee, called out the agreed battle terms first, “this is a one-on-one battle, and the agreed bet is 200 Pokedollars, are we clear?” Whitney looked at both of them back and forth, earning nods, “good!” Whitney clapped, “standard rules apply which means that all moves are fair play,”
Whitney looked between the two of them again, “Trainer Battle between Virah and Terrence Bacren-” Whitney's hand raised and Virah grabbed Nitro's shrunken Pokeball and expanded it, on the other side of the ring, her opponent tossed and caught his Pokeball nervously, “-START!”
They both threw their balls at the same time and the spheres opened mid-air to let out their respective Pokemons before flying back to their owner's hand as if magnetically attracted to them.
Once fully out, Virah's Weedle and Terrence's Spearrow eyed each other warily before the Flying Type realized what it was fighting against and scoffed.
“Spearrow!” It said, voice disdainful.
Nitro, for his part, didn't reply and simply stared.
Taking initiative, Virah started the battle with a simple command- “Nitro start running around and pick up speed!”
It wasn't an attack, hell, it wasn't even a proper order, she just told her Pokemon to start running. But that was the point, she needed Nitro to start pumping out adrenaline and work up a sweat.
Nitro, who had now fully healed from his workout yesterday, did as told and moved his pink little legs, he started bouncing up and down, his body slithering left and right as he moved around the ring. Opposite of him, the Spearrow was told the command to go in for a peck and finish the fight.
Virah held her breath and waited for the Flying Type to go near, she saw Whitney frown in the corner of her eye, probably confused as to why Virah didn't command her own Pokemon to attack.
The Spearrow flew across the air with the speed and grace naturally found in its species, its eyes, which were already permanently fixed in a glare, looked even more baleful- and hungry, - as it flew away from the Weedle moving circles on the ground.
The Spearrow took to the skies and when it was high enough, its beak glowed white, and like the falcon that it is, the Spearrow aimed for the Weedle and curled its wings.
The Spearrow was fast, but it wasn't enough and Virah was able to react- “Nitro! Jump away and shoot it with String Shot!” - let alone her prodigious Weedle.
Nitro's dodge was unsurprisingly successful and he jumped away seconds before the Spearrow made an impact, and instead of hitting its target, the Flying Type struck the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust that Nitro found no problem in scrying as he fired a thin, straight line of silk towards the area where the Spearrow was last seen.
Virah took note of the way Nitro had mastery over his String Shot and the way he could change the size and thickness of that particular attack. She had heard of trainers creating their own unique attacks before, but those required Pokemon that, by definition, were special in their own right.
And she wanted to believe that Nitro was one such Pokemon but for now, that particular line of thought needed to be placed at the back of her head and she needed to prioritize the ongoing battle. Virah focused back on the fight.
With a cry of its name, the Spearrow flapped its wings and kicked the cloud of dust away- or so it should have, but all that came out was its sounds of struggling, and the cloud of dust was never pushed away.
Like what her opponent mistakenly thought at the start of the battle, Virah took the opportunity for what it is- a free win.
“String Shot again!” Her Weedle pulled its head back and with a mighty cry, fired a thicker and wider strand of silk that, by all means, might as well have been the nets fishermen used to catch entire schools of Magikarps.
The line of string was so thick that it pushed away some of the dust and left a hole in the brown cloud once they made contact.
"Spearrow! Do something!” Her opponent yelled out in desperation instead of thinking up a way to get his Spearrow to actually do something. A Peck on whatever was trapping it would have worked but that didn't seem to cross Terrence's mind.
“String Shot again Nitro!” Virah called out for the third time and her Pokemon did as ordered, he fired a strand of string that was as thick and wide as his last one.
If before Virah was suspicious of Nitro's state- now- now she knew that her Weedle was special.
“Nitro, shot it with Poison Sting over and over again! Finish the fight!” Virah intended to watch on the sidelines now, content to let her Pokemon do its thing.
Like most professional trainers on TV, she'd only watch and throw out commands when the situation changed but when she saw the state of the Spearrow after the cloud of dust cleared from Nitro's repeated attacks, she knew that the situation would stay the way it is.
Nitro ran around the Spearrow, circling it while shooting it with Poison Sting repeatedly, and the Spearrow, for its part, tried to break away from the thick webbing all over its body but it might as well be Asleep because it couldn't do anything, it was, by all definitions, immobilized by the string all over its body.
And when Nitro struck it with a fourth Poison Sting, eliciting a yell, her opponent finally stopped hoping for his Pokemon to break out of its trapped state and called surrender, “I forfeit!”
He sounded a tad bit too desperate there and Virah held back a smirk upon hearing it.
“Nitro pull back,” she issued a simple command and Nitro followed it without any complaints.
The Weedle made his way in front of her and glared at the trapped Spearrow, who, seconds later, was pulled back into its Pokeball, leaving behind all the webbing, which fell to the ground in a viscous heap.
“Uh- Virah is the winner!” She heard Whitney say in shock.
Virah smiled, well that was a rather easy way to earn 200 Pokedollars.
