Chapter 29: Last day
Chapter 29: Last day
On the day of their transmigration to Lamentia, Gojin, Sakura, and Kenji awoke feeling an unusual weariness that weighed heavily upon them. Despite their reluctance, they mustered the strength to rise and stepped outside. The air was cool and fresh, with a gentle breeze rustling the leaves of nearby trees. As they took in their surroundings, the first drops of rain began to fall, creating a soft patter against the ground.
*Agg*
Gojin felt a surge of annoyance at the rain and decided to change into his beachwear—a rather foolish choice, considering he wasn't heading to the beach.
He climbed into some bright, flower-patterned swim trunks with bright blue palm trees and waves, the color of a sunny haven. He wore this with an oversized, short-sleeved Hawaiian shirt of light, airy material with highly contrasting floral prints that definitely did not match the somber weather. He finished the ensemble with flip-flops to complete the absurdity of his outfit as he prepared for the rain.
Getting out of his room, Gojin encountered Kenji and Sakura standing in front, grinning widely. They were momentarily stunned by his outfit, and their smiles grew wider until they took on an almost unsettling quality. Gojin stared at them awkwardly.
"Wow, we have the same thinking. Well, it's for preparation because we might drop into a pond," Gojin said sarcastically as he passed by them. Instantly, they trailed behind him, still grinning. They made their way to Denji's room—actually, his game room.
Sakura knocked lightly, waiting for a response after the first knock.
Almost immediately, Denji appeared in the hallway, looking ready for the day. He wore a fitted black t-shirt and comfortable cargo shorts, complemented by a pair of sturdy sneakers. The ensemble was practical yet stylish, perfect for the journey.
"We're heading to Osaka, where the ritual will take place. I'll fill you in on a few details along the way. We're taking the plane; I've already booked the tickets, so let's go. First, you'll be meeting the second-years in Lamentia. They have six months left before returning to... beautiful EARTH," Denji announced cheerfully.
Gojin merely clicked his tongue in response.
As they stepped outside the building, Denji handed each of them an umbrella while he held one for himself. Gojin declined the umbrella without hesitation, and no one questioned him; they understood his reasons. Kenji, Sakura, and Denji led the way, their umbrellas stretched overhead to shield them from the rain, while Gojin confidently walked behind them.
The rain seemed to pause just before making contact with him since his barrier was in effect.
Coming out of the academy, they made their way through the rain-soaked streets, the sound of water splashing beneath their feet filling the air. Kenji and Sakura exchanged excited glances, while Denji animatedly thought what awaited them in Osaka. Gojin's mind was wandering as they approached the bus stop.
Once they arrived at the airport, the group navigated through the crowded terminal. The scent of coffee and baked goods wafted through the air, mingling with the chatter of travelers. They checked in and made their way through security.
After clearing security, they found their gate and waited for their flight.
As they boarded the plane, Gojin settled into his seat, the hum of conversations around him blending into a comforting background noise. The flight attendants performed their safety demonstrations, and soon the plane was taxiing down the runway.
As the aircraft ascended into the sky, Gojin, Kenji and Sakura gazed out the window at the retreating landscape below. Clouds enveloped them, and the gentle vibrations of the plane provided a sense of calm. The journey continued smoothly, with Denji sharing more insights about Lamentia.
"The second-years are in Lamentia to complete their training," Denji explained. "Once transmigrated into the realm, they have two years to adapt and do some clearings. They've spent a year and a half inside already. If you're wondering how they've been surviving, all will be revealed once you meet them."
Gojin raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "And what about the clan heads?"
Denji's expression turned serious. "That's where it gets complicated. The clan heads—except for L—might try to close the spiritual gate that allows you to return to Earth. They would want to eliminate two people: you and Kenji. Kenji is a vessel for Kurozai, and they're afraid of what might happen if he's allowed to roam free. As for you, they're simply threatened by your strength—an inferiority complex that's foolish, but dangerous nonetheless."
Sakura furrowed her brows. "How can those cats be in charge? And surprisingly, no one opposes their foolish deeds."
Kenji sneered. "Forget about them, we won't die there. That's all I know."
...
The flight had taken about 1.5 hours, but with check-in and waiting time, the entire journey lasted around 3 to 4 hours.
Once they disembarked, the group navigated through the terminal, energized by the vibrant atmosphere of Osaka. The sun was shining brightly, and the streets were dry, thanks to a weather system that had passed through earlier in the day, leaving clear skies.
Denji checked his watch. "Botan should be here anytime soon."
Instantly, a white SUV drove up in front of them and parked, the driver pressing the horn multiple times as if he enjoyed it. They slid down the passenger seat window, where the driver peeked out with a smile.
"Let's get going, guys. We don't have all day," Botan said. He was in his mid-thirties, with short black hair that framed his masculine features and a neatly trimmed black beard that accentuated his strong jawline. His plain shirt and black trousers gave him a casual appearance.
Denji gestured for them to get into the car while he opened the passenger door and sat down, shutting the door behind him. The three of them settled in gently.
As they pulled away from the curb, the SUV glided smoothly through the streets and into the expressway of Osaka. The sun cast a warm glow, illuminating the cityscape. Botan navigated through the traffic with ease, the hum of the engine blending with the sounds of the city.
"So, why are you three wearing beachwear? It's not like you're coming here for a vacation," Botan asked, keeping a fixed gaze on the road ahead as multiple cars whizzed by.
"Just a casual outfit. I've been wanting to wear this since we bought it with Sakura's money," Kenji said, chuckling mischievously while turning to Sakura along with Gojin.
Sakura sighed, ignoring them. "I won't need money for the next two years anyway since we're heading out of this world," she thought.
"That's one astonishing feat you guys pulled off, buying something with a girl's money. A very beautiful and new species of gentlemen," Botan replied sarcastically, which made Sakura smile.
Denji went silent as soon as Botan said those words, realizing he had also made them buy a game disk for him with Sakura's money. He quickly pulled out his phone and began scrolling endlessly, trying to avoid joining the conversation.
Forty-five minutes later, they arrived in front of a traditional mansion. The exterior was stunning, featuring wooden beams and latticework. The roof was adorned with gracefully curved eaves. Beautifully manicured gardens surrounded the property, with cherry blossom trees and stone lanterns. The entrance was marked by a sliding wooden gate, leading to a serene courtyard.
They all stepped out of the car, ready to go in.
"This is where the opening would be taking place, prepare for the ritual." Denji commanded, scanning the surrounding with utmost urgency.
