Chapter 5: Recieving a golden finger

Chapter 5: Recieving a golden finger

"May I look at these bowls?"

He suddenly asked the black-robed man and seeing no reply, he directly picked up an empty bowl in front of him. He did not pick any of the bowls filled with liquid because once touched it will be consumed directly and uncontrollably.

In Barnard's startled eyes, Jenkins gently rubbed the outer surface of the bowl. He has determined that this thing is really wood and it being "gold" is only an illusion of his eyes.

Although he had just been in contact with two such bowls but but that was in a moment of life and death so he had no time to feel the seemingly unimportant touch, but it was easy to find something when he was quiet,

"Are my eyes hallucinating?"

Jenkins had a faint feeling that this is a very important situation. He thought about it in his mind alone instead of asking Barnard rashly.

"No, the effect of that octopus on me has long since disappeared, this is not a vicious hallucination. But why did Mr. Barnard not see the difference between him and me, am I a traverser?"

Thinking of this, Jenkins immediately associated with the legendary "golden fingers".

(TN: Golden finger is a term used in NES gaming community which means having a cheat)

"What is this, an automatic photoshop cheat?"

He tried to play jokes on himself to ease the tension, and it did some good. Jenkins felt that he was about to catch the line.

(TN: Means to get or have information about someone or something)

"Could I be seeing what is called a magical aura? No, whether there is such a thing as magic in this world is another story."

He squirmed uneasily on the stake and continued to think:

"Assuming that what I saw was a reminder from the Golden finger to me, would this be the so-called [Eye of Reality]?"

Thinking of this, he once again gazed at the bowls in an attempt to discover new clues, but to no avail.

The delay was almost over, and it was hard to imagine what Barnard would say if he hesitated any longer.

Taking a deep breath and feeling the murkiness of the air, Jenkins made one last attempt, reaching out with his right hand once again and gently tapping his temple while telling himself in his mind, "You're using superpowers, your eyes are amazing."

This time the feeling was immediately different, there seemed to be a clear stream of water rushing into the somewhat swollen eyes, and the light on the wooden bowl became more obvious.

At the same time, Barnard, the black-robed man and the candle on the table also lit up.

On the former were seven dots of light of varying colors, the body of black-robed man was a hazy gray, and only the candle was a vibrant green.

The green color only refers to the color of its own wax oozing out, the candle light is still a dull yellow.

"The Eye of Truth?"

Desperately suppressing the ecstasy in his heart, Jenkins kept that nervous expression.

"Very well, this extra glow seen is indeed the so-called supernatural aura. Now let's not consider why I could only see the wooden bowl just now, the way out is right in front of us."

He gazed at the verdant candle itself and remembered the introduction earlier, "Green means healing."

"If one wins, one would be able to get into a special club with many pretty female models."

(TN: That' a good way to motivate yourself XD)

Stretching out his hand, Jenkins took off a small piece of wax that had solidified on the table and dropped it straight into the bowl next to him. Before the liquid in the bowl even had a chance to splash out he gulped it directly.

"Nothing happened!"

He said with ecstasy in his heart while telling Barnard the result: "It's clear water!"

At the same time, the door of the room sealed by wooden boards suddenly opened, and the boards were scattered all over the place. No one could see the view outside the door, where there was only a blinding white light much like the one that they had come from.

"We can go!"

Barnard excitedly stood up, only then remembered to write down these few words to Jenkins to see.

Jenkins also got up excitedly, but the smile slowly faded and he sat back down.

"Wait."

Licking his lips, Jenkins looked at the remaining bowls on the table.

"Oh, right."

As if to say the words, Barnard wrote a few words on a piece of paper and gestured for Jenkins to read them.

"And our reward?"

He reads softly.

"The bowl." The black-robed man's hard and eerie voice sounded again after such a long interval.

Barnard immediately held out his hands with joy, but could only pick up one bowl.

Satisfied, he gestured for Jenkins to hurry, but the young man stared into the air as if he were making major considerations.

"Wait."

He finally made up his mind.

"If there's a reward in these bowls, why not try all these?"

A look of horror crossed Barnard's face as he hastily wrote, "You're crazy, how are you going to try the rest when the odds are that they're most likely all poisonous?"

"The candle is probably the antidote."

He explained softly, but Barnard obviously did not believe much, he wrote again: "You have to think about it carefully. What happened now can be just a coincidence, maybe the bowl that you picked was a clear water bowl. Boy, we are really very lucky, don't let your greed eat up your sanity."

It is not that Barnard is too conservative, it was simply because he could not see the briliance of Jenkins in front of him, so when facing the odds that there is a 99% chance of death he was not so "brave".

"Maybe it really is a coincidence, but how can you live a wonderful life without having any courage ?"

With this in mind, Jenkins had a big smile on his face. He reached out and once again snapped off a large piece of solidified wax from the table and broke it into four small pieces to put into the remaining liquid.

Without bothering to look at Barnard's expression, Jenkins picked up four bowls in a row and drank from them, with the sound of bowls and tables clanging incessantly.

Barnard held his breath and did not dare to exhale, watching Jenkins' crazy behavior.

A few moments later, Jenkins sighed, "Four bowls of all clear water."

Barnard nodded desperately, gesturing for Jenkins to take a bowl and then to hurry away quickly..

"Too greedy, how can two people make ten choices and have three rewards?"

He thought so with some regret, and casually reached for a bowl, but did not to take it, the bowl seemed to be firmly glued to the table.

Before he could ask, the black-robed man who had been sitting moved.

He stood up and pointed at the candle in a posture where two opposite people seemed frozen.

"Take it away."

It was the first time he had uttered two words.

Jenkins did not react for a while, until the ecstatic Barnard next to him nudged him, he took the candle which had already burned a small part as an afterthought.

After that, the two men did not dare to turn back and scurried one after the other toward the light of the exit, leaving the black-robed man standing quietly in the darkness after the candle disappeared.

The black robe on his body slid uncontrollably toward the light of the doorway, as if the invisible man was wearing it. And underneath the clothes, a withered bone was revealed, falling to the ground and breaking into bone fragments, and a moment later, the bone dust was thoroughly mixed with the dust of the same composition on the ground.
