Chapter 187: Ambushed

Chapter 187: Ambushed

“So Chach is Dayuan, and Dayuan is Chach!” Shu Yichao exclaimed in astonishment after examining the minimap.

He was only belatedly recalling that now.

This place had been called Dayuan during the Han dynasty. They once refused to sell good steeds to Emperor Wu of Han, so the latter dispatched an army over to beat them up before taking a steed back themselves.

Later in the Tang dynasty, this place became known as Chach. They even once established a Dayuan Protectorate here.

“This means that my pegasus is nearby!” Shu Yichao rubbed his hand in glee. He glanced at Miazova and murmured, “I wonder if the pegasi are as fast as you.”

“How’s that possible?” Miazova, who had reverted to his mismatched armor human form, grunted in annoyance.

“Orh…”

“What’s with that voice dripping with regret?”

“Whatever! It beats having nothing.” Shu Yichao threw his hands into the air. “Brothers, charge straight ahead! We’ll be reclaiming Dayuan Protectorate!”

Tak! Tak!

Following Shu Yichao’s shout, a massive figure began opening up his strides.

Like the other hero-class enemies, the high shaman was reanimated as a zombie after his death and taken into Shu Yichao’s army. A small army of zombies was slowly taking shape.

It just so happened that the fog of war over Transoxania had been lifted, so Shu Yichao picked the most convenient route and headed straight for Chach’s capital.

While he was heading southward through a mountain range, he noticed a huge cluster of red dots in the vicinity.

“What are these red dots? They even intentionally let my vanguards through… Are they planning to ambush me?” Shu Yichao murmured.

In a mountain valley, the wolf-eared woman lay in ambush with her Icewolf Cavalrymen.

The Icewolf Cavalrymen were a daunting group of monster cavalrymen in the Icewolf Tribe. Their grueling training with their huge and vicious mounts gave them superior stamina to withstand the bitter cold and excellent mobility to maneuver freely even along a sharp cliff.

That allowed the Holywolf Warrior to lay an ambush in the most treacherous terrains.

The Tangs would have never guessed that a powerful army would be camping on a steep, snowy cliff where ibexes could fall to their deaths.

“Hah! Something of that caliber is being termed as a calamity? I bet our Icewolf Warriors can fight them 1 is to 30. People nowadays like to talk nonsense.”

The Holywolf Warrior nearly laughed her head off when she saw the fog-like specters.

She recalled the letter she had received days ago from Weryomahners, the disciple of the Tibetan Empire’s chief archmage. It praised the Tangs’ undead army to the high heaven as if it was inevitable for any city or army to be overrun by them.

It was under this pretext that Weryomahners urgently requested reinforcement from them.

But no matter how the Holywolf Warrior looked at it, she could only see a bunch of weaklings who relied on their number to drown out their enemies.

Hmph! I’ll rip off the limbs of that scout who spouted nonsense!

Beside the Holywolf Warrior, the commanders of the Icewolf Tribe sneered in glee.

“Ready!” The Holywolf Warrior raised her hand.

She planned to wait for the enemy’s vanguards to first pass through before charging into the enemy’s ranks. By dividing the enemy’s forces into two, they could induce panic in the enemy, thus making them easier to deal with.

But she never got a chance to lower her hand.

She started with a confident look, but minutes later, confusion seeped into her eyes, and her face soon warped in shock and fear.

There was simply no end to the fog-like specters trailing across the valley!

“How long have they been drifting for?” the Holywolf Warrior murmured.

How many specters do the enemies have?!

Tok tok!

Heavy footsteps suddenly echoed from the valley entrance, jolting the snow on the ground with each step taken. It felt like a behemoth was approaching them.

The Holywolf Warrior and her commanders looked over and…

“K-K-KHAN!” the tribal commander beside the Holywolf Warrior exclaimed with clattering teeth. “I-I-IT IS THE HIGH SHAMAN! WHAT SHOULD WE DO?!”

The tribal commander had once seen the high shaman transforming into that monstrous figure in a fit of rage during a battle, and in the end, an entire country was obliterated from the face of the world.

Since then, the high shaman’s bestial transformation had been nightmare fodder for locals.

Who could have thought that the next time they saw the high shaman’s terrifying transformation, it would be after he had already died and was reanimated as a zombie?

This must be a dream. How could our Transoxania’s deity die to the Tangs?

What should we do?!

The frightened tribal commander turned to the Holywolf Warrior. The latter closed her eyes and took in a deep breath to calm herself.

“Prepare to retreat!”

Her strength was beneath that of the high shaman. If even the high shaman had been defeated by the Tangs, the last thing she should do was foolishly leap into the fray and give away her own life.

“Weryomahners, that bitch! What nonsense did she write in the letter? She spoke like the Tangs were a bunch of pushovers!” the Holywolf Warrior cursed in anger. Then, she patted her chest in relief. “It’s a good thing I came to investigate the situation, or else we would have been goners.”

She had faith in her Icewolf Cavalrymen’s strength, but even she had to concede that they would be at a disadvantage against an endless stream of specters that looked almost like the onset of a snowstorm.

Little did she know that it was too late to retreat.

Up to this point, the specters had been drifting straight across the mountain valley as if they were oblivious to the Holywolf Warrior’s ambush. But all of a sudden, the specters changed the direction of their movements and started suffusing the valley.

“Shit!”

“We have been ambushed!”

Screams of agony echoed from the Icewolf Cavalrymen.

The Holywolf Warrior was stunned. It occurred to her that the Tangs had known they were here all along, just that they had feigned ignorance to catch them off guard.

What’s this nonsense? Those lying in ambush being ambushed instead!

“Fight! We’ll break out of their encirclement!” the Holywolf Warrior roared.

Her only consolation was that the specters were extremely weak individually. With her Icewolf Cavalrymen’s ferocity, they should be able to slaughter their way out.

So, she and her Icewolf Cavalrymen got onto their mounts and charged out with the tribal nomads before the specters could close their encirclement. With their overwhelming offensive prowess, they managed to tear an opening and escape.

“Kill them!” the Icewolf Cavalrymen roared as they dissipated the specters like fog.

Their ferocity raised the morale of the other tribal nomads, prompting them to fight with incredible tenacity. It looked like the odds were turning in their favor.

But just then…

Bzt!

A silver serpent suddenly descended upon an Icewolf Cavalryman, charging him full of lightning through his eyes, nose, and mouth. The Icewolf Cavalryman screamed out of excruciating pain.

In a split moment, he was reduced to a charred corpse and tumbled down the steep cliff.

“I calmly nock my white-feathered arrows from the horseback…”

Shu Yichao strutted into the mountain valley on a war steed as he unleashed a barrage of Lightning Arrows on the Icewolf Cavalrymen. Wherever his Lightning Arrows struck, his enemies fell like autumn leaves.

“…and with bullseyes I take down my enemies.”
