Chapter 96 We Already Have A Good Relationship
Just as Zhao Lifei left Yang Feng’s office, she received a phone call from her grandfather. She checked the date and realized that a couple of days had already passed and he might be calling her to assume her role as a consultant.
She picked up the call but before she could even greet him, he had already started speaking.
"What are you doing at Yang Enterprise?" He didn’t bother beating around the bush and decided to confront her on the most pressing issue.
Zhao Lifei frowned at his words. She couldn’t help but look around for his people, but alas, they were well-hidden. She figured one of her hidden bodyguards reported to him but she didn’t think they would move this fast.
"You always seem to skip the greetings, grandfather. That’s not polite." She said, walking down the long path leading to the sidewalks. Once she reached the main road, she hailed down a cab. The street was bustling with cars and people walking.
"Greetings are pointless phrases to establish a good relationship. We already have one, why establish it further?" He told her, his words an obvious stab to Li Xuan who always greeted him. The poor secretary could do nothing but look away in shame.
"Now answer my question. What were you doing there? Were you consulting for that Yang Heng?" Zhao Moyao was lenient when it came to his grandchildren and didn’t really care where they used their skills, but Zhao Lifei was someone very useful to him.
As much as he liked Yang Feng, it wasn’t enough for him to allow her to use her skills to help Yang Enterprise. He wouldn’t let anyone use his granddaughter the same way that Zheng scum did. He had harnessed her skill for years, he wasn’t going to let his star pupil slip away from him again.
Li Xuan sighed upon hearing the same mispronunciation of Yang Feng’s name. It seemed his stubborn boss would continue using that nickname, regardless of the consequences...He wanted to correct it, but seeing how adamant Zhao Moyao was on doing so, he figured there was no need in attempting to fix it.
Zhao Lifei raised a brow at his words. "Why do men always jump to conclusions?" She voiced her thoughts out loud.
"Don’t change the topic." Zhao Moyao told her with a frown.
"I was not consulting for Yang Feng."
"Then what were you doing there?" He suspiciously asked her, thinking back to the envelope she had been holding that his men had reported to him.
"I had something to give him." She vaguely said just as a cab pulled up in front of her. She climbed in, placed her phone away from her ears, and gave the driver her desired location.
"What did you give him?" He continued to interrogate her.
Wu Yuntai, who was currently sitting in the same room as Zhao Moyao, thought this grandfather was too protective of her. He understood Zhao Moyao had intentions of keeping her skills to himself but did his boss really have to go to such extent on asking this many questions?
"Just a few files with regards to his hospitalization." She faintly said. She didn’t want to tell him that she had contacted Lu Minhong to dig into Yang Feng’s assassination.
For some reason, her grandfather never liked him. Their first encounter had been terrible because it was the exact moment that Zhao Lifei gave Lu Minhong a thick wad of money. And because Zhao Moyao had checked Lu Minhong’s background, he discovered the young man was from a very impoverished background. Thus, he thought Lu Minhong was only friends with Zhao Lifei for money.
Even after her grandfather’s constant pestering, she still remained friends with the boy.
"That’s all?" Zhao Moyao felt his anger die down at her words. She rarely lied to him and he took it as the truth.
"Yes, that is all." She confirmed, nodding her head despite the fact that he couldn’t see her.
She added on, "Did you only call to interrogate me? There must be better reasons as to why a big CEO is calling me." She chuckled and decided to change the topic to something else. The more he asked her about Yang Feng, the more she would be inclined to spill the truth. She always had a hard time when it comes to lying to her grandfather...
"There is. Come to my office. I have something to discuss with you." He curtly told her. He kept his voice very inconspicuous and neutral to make sure that she does not become suspicious of him. His granddaughter can be stubborn and this was something he needed her cooperation with.
"I’m already on my way there. What is it?" She asked him, looking out the window and realizing she was five minutes away from the headquarters.
"You’ll know when you get here." He answered. He didn’t want to reveal anything to her.
He was planning to ask her something he knew she wouldn’t agree to. If she heard it through the phone and not in person, she would easily reject his offer and avoid him for a few days. But if she was here to listen to it personally, he could pressure her into saying yes.
Zhao Lifei frowned at his words. Her eyebrows came together in confusion, forming creases between it. "Why can’t you tell me over the phone—"
"No."
"But—"
"I will tell you later."
"But—"
"You have to be patient child, for patience is—"
"Virtue. I know." She repeated the same phrase he always said to her.
"I dislike when you finish my sentences for me."
"Don’t lie, I know you’re proud of it." She lightly laughed. She had thoroughly listened to his lectures so much as a child, that she could easily recite them word by word.
When the cab finally reached the Zhao Corporation’s building, she paid the driver, left behind a hefty tip as usual, and climbed out of the car.
"Sure, I am." He sarcastically replied, even though it was the blatant truth.
She smiled at his stubbornness but didn’t decide to comment about it. "I’ve arrived at the company, grandfather." She informed him, swiping the private employee card and entering the elevator.
"Good. I’m in my office, I will see you in here." He ended the call before she could say anything else. The warmth left his eyes, and his cold stoic face immediately came back. He lifted his gaze to look at the men he trusted the most in this world.
Wu Yuntai was seated on the couch, wistfully staring at an invitation card with disinterest. Li Xuan was standing to the sidelines, pretending he wasn’t eavesdropping but Zhao Moyao knew he heard the conversation.
Seeing his boss was done with the phone call, Li Xuan stood up straighter. He turned to Zhao Moyao, awaiting his orders.
"Get the files ready." He gestured to Li Xuan who nodded his head and left to go fetch the papers.
