Chapter 335 Looking For The Scoreline Equalizer
That goal from Ferran was enough to give the players the super boost of confidence that they needed and the support from the fans was starting to get louder, but it wasn't over yet.
"You can say Unique FC are back in the game because that was an equalizer from Ferran on aggregate but they are the ones who are going to get eliminated if the match ends with just this scoreline, FC Basel still have the away goal advantage, so, If Unique FC want to run away with this one, they'll have to equalize the current scoreline." Steve expressed.
"We just have to equalize the current scoreline," Minino muttered as he quickly raced toward the midfielder who had just received the ball from his teammate to try and take the ball off him, but before he could get to him, he quickly pushed the ball to Felix up front.
Unique FC were trying to take the ball away from the guests here, but they were doing well in passing it around with the aim of drawing them out and then striking an attacking move at the right moment.
Hans received the ball from Felix, and just before Martinez could close up on him, he pushed the ball to Reto who had to push it back as quickly as possible because Norman was already upon him.
"Looks like FC Basel are all out of ideas here and they are trying really hard to come up with one," Jim said.
The ball found its way back to Felix and without hesitation, he sent the ball rolling to Henrique.
"Henrique."
The winger tried to find his way past Roland, but the left back wasn't giving him the space he needed so he had to pull the ball back to Hans.
Who quickly initiated a quick one-two with him, but just as they got inside the box, Henrique's path was quickly blocked by Roland who came out of nowhere giving Dave the time to step up and pick up the ball.
"And that attack has been stopped right in its tracks," Jim said.
'It's quite a shame how I can't even add my unused stat points to my stats now.' Dave said before he threw the ball up and sent it flying into the pitch.
<I told you to add them but you didn't listen>
'I was waiting for the right moment, if you had told me that something like this was going to happen then I would have done it.'
<No, you just don't like taking my words seriously, when you start taking them as seriously as you are supposed to take them, then you will start getting into situations similar to this one>
The ball was sent flying directly toward Ferran who brought it down with his chest and pushed it to Minino just before Felix could get to him.
"Minino."
Minino quickly moved down the wing with the ball before he found Frankie making a run down the left wing and pushed the ball to him.
The midfielder got his foot on the ball as the midfielder grabbed his shirt to try and pull him down, but Frankie had more strength than he could possibly imagine.
The midfielder kept struggling until he was able to get away from the player pulling his shirt.
"That was an intentional pull on Frankie there, he has a lot of strength to be able to pull himself out of a situation like that." Jim said.
After getting away from the situation, Frankie passed the ball to Mateo before quickly turning to confront the guy who was pulling his shirt.
Mateo got hold of the ball and quickly tried to cut into the box but he was stopped right on his track as he was pushed down by one of the center backs just before he could go any further.
The referee didn't need to look twice or check VAR before blowing his whistle as that was a very clear foul.
The way the defender pushed down Mateo pissed off a lot of his teammates especially Minino and Frankie who quickly rushed to the area to have a word with Bennett, the defender who just had to get rough with their wonder kid.
Fortunately, the referee was right there to stop the situation from escalating further and he didn't hold back in showing Bennet a yellow card.
"Things looked like it was about to get a little rough there, but it's a good thing the referee's there to calm things down."
That push wasn't enough to do anything to Mateo as he was back on his feet even before his teammates got to the area.
"That was an intentional push," Amber said from where she was watching the match alongside Emma.
"Yeah, players like him are always targets for the opposing defenders who try everything possible to get him injured and put him out of the game and sometimes they ended up getting red cards because of their aggressive and obvious tackles." Emma expressed.
"Yeah, that's exactly what happened when they played against Spree City last week, that guy seriously wanted to injure him, he got sent off because of that, and gladly, Mateo didn't pick up any injury." She said. "If things like this keep happening in almost every match, he may pick up a terrible injury and his career will go downhill."
"Hey," Emma said before turning her gaze to her. "Mateo's way more durable than you think, if players like Ciro was able to survive those horrendous tackle at the early stages of his career, then I'm sure he can do it too."
Amber kept her gaze on her senior for a while before she slowly turned it back to the pitch where Mateo could be seen standing over the ball now.
"Hmph, I hope so." She muttered.
Mateo was standing over the ball now right at the edge of the box.
FC Basel had already formed their four-man wall inside the box with a man below, and now all that was left was for the referee to blow his whistle.
After making sure that everything was ready, the referee blew his whistle.
Mateo kept his gaze on the ball for a while before he slowly took two steps backward, after that, he quickly closed up on the ball and sent it flying toward the goalpost.
"Mateo!"
The ball was sent flying toward the top right side of the goalpost and it was a close call for Fillip as he was only able to get the tip of his glove on it, but that was all he needed to push the ball a little further for it to hit the crossbar before falling over for a corner kick.
"Magnificent save from Filip, that was a very close call."
"Yeah, but now they have a corner kick to deal with."
Ferran quickly picked up the ball and moved to the corner spot.
He could have created something nice with that corner kick, but he placed it a little closer to Filip who didn't have any trouble springing up and catching it.
"The danger has been averted."
Filip tried to start a counterattack after making that catch but unfortunately for him, Dave sensed it even before he did it, the goalkeeper had to go far from his box to thwart that plan.
The match continued until the seventy-ninth minute, and so far, Unique FC had not been able to get that equalizer that they needed so desperately.
"Ten minutes left in normal time and Unique FC are still in danger of getting knocked out of the Europa conference league," Jim said.
FC Basel had just won a corner kick after a wonderful save to deny Henrique from giving his team the lead once again.
Felix was standing over the ball now waiting for the referee's whistle, and as soon as he heard it, he took two steps backward before he quickly closed up on the ball and sent it flying into the box.
The ball fell directly toward Reto who aimed his shot directly toward the bottom left side of the goalpost and that could have gone in if Dave didn't stretch his leg out right on time to block it and just before any of the opponents could get to it, he stretched his hands and pushed the ball to Norman who quickly sent the ball flying out to Merino.
"That was a close call and now they have a chance to start a counterattack." The excitement in his voice was slowly rising.
Merino quickly pushed the ball to Mateo to avoid the defender right in front of him.
Mateo received the ball with Bennet quickly heading toward him, but he wasn't afraid to take him on.
He quickly pushed the ball forward and zoomed past the defender to receive it at the other end just before the defender could get to him.
"Woah!"
The other defender quickly rushed to the winger to try and bring him down with a sliding tackle, but that was a big mistake as the winger quickly paused to allow him to slide right in front of him before he quickly went around him with the ball.
Bennett was still hot on his trail and there was two more defenders who had closed up on him from the right but he wasn't afraid and kept moving forward.
Deleting both of those defenders didn't take him time and now he had a clear sight of the goalpost right from the edge of the box.
"Oh, my goodness, Mateo is tearing apart the defense and he's got that shooting space!"
