Chapter 165: Recognised!
Chapter 165: Recognised!
Kace grinned despite narrowly avoiding another wind blade that his opponent had directed towards him. He had no idea that his opponent was none other than the Hero's Guild's vice leader who had initiated the assault. Cameron had a grave look on his face as he watched Kace avoid the deadly spell. 'Tch wasted more mana.'
Kace swung the stave in his hand towards the seemingly arrogant hero as purple vines lashed out. Once they were within about a meter of their intended target, they struck against an invisible wall. Naturally, this was an air wall conjured by Cameron to defend himself. It gave Kace quite a difficult time breaking past it, but he knew that he would be depleting his opponent's available mana reserves with each strike.
'I've got to get myself a spell-like that!' Kace thought as he eyed the defensive spell his opponent wielded with greed in his eyes. 'Did you forget that my vines pretty much act as the same thing!' Sylvan retorted while sounding displeased at Kace's idle comment.
'Of course not! But you have to admit that his defence is better than yours!'
'Yeah, but that's only because his wind can cut through my vines! Mine is more of a physical barrier whereas he excels at defending against ranged attacks!'
'Wait! Are you saying he will crumble faster if I strike physically instead of using mana?'
'Well, theoretically speaking, yes. It takes a large amount of mana to solidify air like that. Whereas my own is just used to manipulate an already existing physical object.'
'Sylvan! You're a genius! But you could have told me sooner!' Kace was excited at having been told of a way to break past this nuisance. So his annoyance at Sylvan withholding this information was not too evident in their conversation.
Kace sprang into action and used Stampede to close the distance that Cameron was keeping from him. His opponent's eyes went wide in shock as he noticed what Kace was attempting to do. 'What the fuck! He clearly didn't know my spells weakness a moment ago so he should still be relatively new to the concepts of magic! So how did he work it out so fast!'
Cameron's misunderstanding of what was transpiring made him develop a fear for Kace's potential talent in the field of magic. Little did he know it was only because of Sylvan that he could bridge the gap in their knowledge. Being an existence created from magic, Sylvan had a deep understanding of how each element's basics truly worked.
However, because it was more of an instinct than actually something he had learned, it was difficult for him to convey its meaning to his partner. Kace slammed the stave into the invisible wall and watched as Cameron's complexion paled slightly due to his mana's rapid expenditure to retain the spell. Kace's physical capabilities were no joke after all, which took the hero completely by surprise.
Normally Cameron would expect one of his sparring partners to strike the shield five or six times to produce the same effect Kace had. The difference in physical strength was definitely overwhelming. 'Keeping this spell up is no longer a viable option. I'll have to change tactics!' Cameron thought as he watched another brutal swing head towards where his barrier would intercept it.
Kace stumbled slightly as the stave passed through empty air. 'Fuck! He dropped the shield!' Sylvan swore energetically to let Kace know exactly what had transpired. While he was off-balance, a bolt of lightning erupted from Cameron's finger, aimed directly at Kace's head. However, with thanks to Sylvan's warning, Kace was prepared for this counterattack.
His unoccupied hand was already pointed toward the stone wall that made up the battlement overlooking the hero army below. Spider Thread! Attaching it to the stone, Kace pulled hard on it to pull himself out of the danger zone. The unusual ability caught the attention of Cameron. 'Fuck! Seems like he's just full of tricks! Wait? Why does it look like what a spider would do? This seems familiar, somehow!'
After witnessing this move of Kace's, something was nagging at the back of Cameron's mind. He seemed to remember a vague correspondence from the main headquarters that arrived only recently. Thinking about how long it had taken to arrive due to the time flow difference of this world and the one it originated from he realised that it should have been sent quite some time ago.
If he remembered correctly the sender's name was some backwater captain level member of the guild so had not given it much attention at the time. Thinking that its contents would never be relevant to themselves. Cameron's eyes narrowed on Kace who was now back on steady feet and preparing to square off with him. 'So, this should be the monster that has been causing such a large headache over in that world, eh? That means he should be quite a valuable target!'
Cameron now felt as though he fully understood the gravity of facing off against this opponent. From the reports that accompanied the letter, the monster should have a wide arsenal of versatile skills. Either for killing or escaping. It was not general knowledge throughout their guild that such a creature existed as the higher-ups wanted to keep it quiet.
Though, Cameron felt that he had been wronged somehow since he had not triggered the quest that came in the reports. 'I can only assume it's because we're not in the territory of the God that was responsible for the quest. In that case, it would be best if we could capture him alive and turn him into headquarters!'
With a new plan of attack in mind and a goal to go along with it, Cameron's excitement for a challenge began to well up inside of his chest. 'Let's do this, you freak!' He threw out both hands towards Kace and unleashed one of his large area of effect spells. 'Chained Lightning!'
