Chapter 304: Unexpected Reinforcements (4)
Vaskra felt uneasy when she thought about the approaching black mass. If they did not know what was inside of it, how could she gauge whether their assault was a lost cause? If they turned out to be strong, then they could suffer immeasurable losses that would set them back.
Vaskra sighed as she continued to study the city before her. 'Are these reinforcement coming because we've almost broken through? Or is it coincidence?' Vaskra shook her head as she struggled to understand the reason. 'There's no way to know. So do we retreat or push on?'
The captains around her awaited her decision. Most of them were anxious, while others felt their battle intent soar to new heights. Their eyes rested on Vaskra's expression as they tried to discern what was going through her mind.
"Keep attacking! It will be a waste to pull back now!" Vaskra announced with a cold voice. "Keep an eye on those reinforcements. I want to know what they intend to do!"
The captains grunted in affirmation of her orders before rushing off to their respective commands. The air was soon filled with more cannon fire as a curtain of spells rained down on the city yet again. If the barrier did not prevent these attacks, then there was a good chance that this barrage could have levelled at least half of the city!
"The mist is speeding up, Lady Vaskra!" A scout called out to her.
"They seem to be impatient. This means there's a good chance we're about to smash the city's defences! Everybody! Fire at will! Bring that barrier down!" Vaskra roared in excitement.
If they could just bring the barrier down, then even if they were forced to retreat, it would end in a victory for them! A barrier could not be placed in a short space of time which would mean this city would be theirs for the taking whenever they wanted to!
Vaskra's gaze became intense as she watched the barrier ripple under the latest wave of attacks. Reports constantly reached her ears about the progress of the enemy reinforcements. She silently cursed as she realised this new force was almost to the city! It was at that point, a new shocking report came in!
"Lady Vaskra! The city has opened fire on the mist! A fair bit of their forces had been diverted to deal with it!"
Vaskra stared at the goblin who reported the news with a blank expression on her face. "They're allies? Since when did we have a force behind enemy lines?"
More reports began to flood in as spells of mainly the ice element emerged from the mist to strike the city's barrier. Vaskra's eyes went wide in anticipation. No matter who this new force was, they could not have picked a better time to interfere with this battle!
Those who had rather sharp eyes on the monster's side spotted that the defenders on the walls began to look nervously at the ripples on the barrier. The monsters immediately became like sharks who smelt blood in the water! A ferocious grin spread across Vaskra's face as she knew their moment was about to arrive!
"Charge!" She roared, and the ground thundered beneath the feet of her army.
Arrows and spells rose into the air to intercept them. Earthen Walls and Wind Shields appeared to protect the vanguard. Despite these measures, monsters began to scream as the enemy attacks slipped between the cracks in the defence. Dirt and body parts were sent flying through the air as the tsunami of monsters charged recklessly towards the city.
Another round of cannon fire erupted from the airships, and that was when it happened. With a sound like breaking glass, the barrier protecting the humans within the city shattered! Cries of alarm rose from behind the walls as the monster army was driven into a frenzy! When Vaskra's side had only covered half of the distance between their lines and the walls, a massive black mist rose up and over them into the city.
'What the hell is that?' Vaskra wondered as a troll held her wheelchair in one of its oversized hands. "Hurry up and do it!"
The troll ran for a few steps before throwing Vaskra high into the air! The wings attached to her chair unfurled, and she immediately began to glide quickly over the heads of her army. With her new vantage point, Vaskra spotted two figures on top of the wall where the mist breached the city.
One was a man who looked like he belonged at the helm of a ship. While the other was breathtaking beauty in silver armour and a small silver crown on her head. Vaskra hissed at this sight because the woman looked remarkably like Sophia! 'Isn't she supposed to be in the North?
As Vaskra hesitated for a moment, the woman turned and waved towards her before disappearing into the city. The man seemed to have a complicated look on his face before he jumped off the wall to follow her. 'That's not Sophia! She'd never wave at me!' This one small detail had been enough for Vaskra to realise who she would soon be dealing with.
Sonja grabbed the first soldier she came across and bit deeply into his neck! Her throat moved rhythmically as she drained the poor soul of all of his blood. 'Oh, that's much better!' Sonja grinned as she tore her eyes away from the wound she had left behind. She casually tossed the lifeless body aside as she began scanning the crowd for her next meal.
Raven appeared next to her and likewise eyed the crowd with a hungry expression on his face. Some time ago, they had run out of blood before they broke through the gateways that led them here. As soon as they arrived, they discovered themselves in the bowels of a well-concealed fortress. It had taken a lot out of them to escape that situation, so right now, every vampire was ravenous.
A hero lunged at Sonja with his spear at that moment. Before the tip could even come close to putting a scratch on her armour, Raven had already torn the offender's arms from their sockets and clamped down on his throat! Sonja chuckled to see that as she remembered his complaints about turning into a full vampire.
'It seems like he's finally accepted it.' Sonja gave a warm smile in the direction of her betrothed. As the air was filled with the screams of the dying Sonja took hold of Raven's chin. Turning his gaze to meet hers, she rewarded him with a passionate kiss. The taste of blood still fresh on both of their tongues.
"Be sure to have fun now. Who knows when we'll get another chance like this." Sonja whispered before peeling herself away from Raven. Her eyes darted across the men amongst the heroes. Some were terrified, while others had a look of lust in their eyes. Sonja covered her mouth and chuckled like an innocent girl.
The men were enraptured at this sight despite the blood running down the front of her armour. Before they could react, Sonja had suddenly disappeared. A strange pulp sprayed into the faces of a few of the heroes near the front of the crowd before several dead bodies hit the floor. Sonja laughed to herself as she appeared in the middle of the crowd.
'This lot are quite weak. A single punch to the face was enough to deal with them! I only wanted to knock them unconscious!' As Sonja half complained and half laughed at the situation, Vaskra's rig glided overhead.
Vaskra's eyes were wide as she studied the devastation the vampires had wrought in such a short space of time. It was simply unbelievable to her! This should have been a hard battle for her army once they breached the walls, but Sonja's forces were making it look like child's play!
Vaskra suddenly felt an imposing presence to her right side. She slowly turned her head to discover Sonja gliding along beside her on a large pair of leathery bat wings. 'When?'
"I suggest you pull back, for now, little one. Your bravery is admirable, but I'm pretty sure you don't want to lose your life." Sonja flashed a smile as she wiped some blood from around her mouth. "I'll come and find you once my people are done here."
Vaskra nodded absentmindedly. She could not find the strength to disobey this woman at all! She circled around in the air and gave the signal to retreat to her army that was still approaching the walls! The captains were confused, but they were sure that Vaskra had her reasons.
A few hours passed before the wailing coming from the city began to quiet down. Then, the black mist reappeared and quickly made its way towards where Vaskra was waiting. Before it could reach them, there was a strange black flash that blinded everyone! When they were able to see again, they stared at the city in horror.
Or rather, they stared at where the city used to be
