Chapter 91: Engagement
Judging from the conditions in the meadow, David thought he and Jane had arrived too late as people were already gathering.
There didn't seem to be any other guests coming.
This meant that all the guests thought highly of this party or else there was no way they would have been so quick to arrive. Sometimes, big figures deliberately arrive late to show their great position.
Lisa drove slowly, not to the parking lot, but to the red carpet that no one stepped on. Perhaps she wanted to take David and Jane there first before parking the car.
At the end of the red carpet, David saw a small, simple stage.
There was even a small table on which was a gold ring with a small diamond on it.
The ring looked so clear because the diamond's light was so sharp.
"Eh?" David was dumbfounded when he saw the large screen at the back of the stage change.
It was always changing, sometimes displaying romantic words and sometimes displaying romantic moments of lovers.
Currently, it was displaying the names of a man and a woman, which seemed to be the names of the engaged couple here.
David was surprised that it was his name and Jane's name.
What does this mean?
David looked at Jane with a look of confusion while the latter returned his gaze with a faint smile.
"What are you confused about? Let's go down," she said.
They didn't have to wait for Lisa as the car door was opened directly by the two servants on duty at the event.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the couple of the century, Mr. David and Miss Jane." A host said using a microphone so that his voice echoed loudly.
David looked up at him only to find that he was actually a famous TV host, a tall man with a rather thin body and rather long hair. He was wearing men's clothes but there was a woman's style in his aura and tone of voice.
Overall, he gave off a friendly impression.
At this point, David didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
He didn't know why Jane would make this kind of event.
However, since he had already come, there was no way he was leaving now.
He got out of the car while smoothing the collar of his shirt, pretending that there was nothing strange in his mind.
People's curious gazes were fixed on him, but there was no one he cared about. At most, he just stared at Owen for a moment.
He was alone, not with his girlfriend. He kept smiling when he saw David.
Now, he finally saw what David's girlfriend looked like.
At the same time, he probably felt strange because he also saw David with Evelyn who was the mother of the white-haired woman.
When he saw Jane, he couldn't help but praise David's luck once again.
It seemed that there were indeed some men in this world who were very lucky when it came to women.
Jane who then stopped beside him grabbed his hand, pulling him forward slightly.
David followed her and asked, "Does your family know about this?"
"I don't know, I'm the only one living in Paris now, but they should already know about our relationship. As for this engagement, maybe someone gave them the information. Well, if anyone happens to be in Paris, that person might come." Jane replied.
"Are you worried?"
"No, of course, I'm ready to fight anyone," David replied.
He and Jane then walked towards the stage at the end of the red carpet.
"It's just that I don't understand why you have to hold this event," David added.
Jane looked around after David finished speaking.
"My family's reputation is enough to keep everyone here down," Jane said. "My purpose is to tell them that we are going to establish a new authority in this city. That will make a lot of our business easier. There may still be some people who are unhappy, but that doesn't matter as long as more people decide to submit to us."
"Welcome, Mr. David, Miss Jane!" the host said to them as they arrived in front of him.
He himself was near the stage.
"Miss Jane, would you like the engagement ceremony to start now?" the host asked.
"Yes, we will start now," Jane replied.
"Then please come on stage for the ring ceremony." The host invited David and Jane onto the stage.
They nodded before taking the stage.
While standing there, David wanted to take a deep breath but chose to hold it in as it would make him look uneasy.
From the stage, he realized that the number of guests at this party was really big.
Being stared at by them simultaneously could still make his heart beat hard even though he had extraordinary spiritual power.
In the end, none of them were ordinary people. Before he met Jane, each of them was practically miles above him.
After David and Jane came on stage, the host also came on stage.
He stood slightly beside them.
"Before this, I would like to apologize to all of you for sending out the invitations on the spur of the moment," he said with a quiet laugh.
It seemed that even this entire event was held on the spur of the moment, but it still wasn't something difficult as long as there was money to prepare the event.
"Honestly, I'm surprised that all the invited guests came to this event even though the invitations were only distributed this afternoon," he continued.
His words this time made some people laugh.
"Yeah, I know you're all curious about Miss Jane, now that we've all seen her today, her beauty is boundless, but unfortunately there's already a man who has her heart, a wonderful man from our beloved city. Ladies and gentlemen, please clap for Mr. David."
The host started clapping and people followed suit.
So far, they still seemed very curious about David.
David wouldn't be surprised if he was treated kindly by everyone here later when he met them outside.
"Mr. David!" The host turned his gaze to David.
At the same time, he picked up the ring box on the table, then pointed it at David.
"Please put this ring on the ring finger of Miss Jane's left hand. It is a sign of your love and a sign of your relationship that we hope will last forever," he said.
For this David did not even need words from the host. He took the ring with a gentle gesture before looking at Jane who was finally facing him.
"Miss Jane, will you be my lover forever?" David asked her, speaking in a rather formal tone.
Jane blinked her eyes before pointing her left hand at him.
"This is a no-brainer since I came to you in the first place," Jane replied, making David laugh.
He took her hand and started moving to place the ring on her ring finger.
This good thing had better be done quickly before any unexpected distractions arose.
Putting the ring on Jane's ring finger was not difficult either.
It fit perfectly all the way to the tip of the finger.
"Please clap for them," said the host.
In fact, people started clapping before he even finished speaking.
"Would any of you like to speak?" The host then asked David and Jane.
David looked at Jane, and Jane suddenly said, "how about you say a few words to them."
David didn't expect Jane to ask him to speak here. This was something that was a bit difficult for him.
He looked down for a while, but finally he took the microphone in the host's hand.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming to our engagement ceremony," he said calmly.
After speaking briefly, he felt more comfortable. His nervousness disappeared instantly.
"This engagement is just between us, so our families are not here," he continued.
When he spoke about that, people looked at each other strangely.
Of course, there was something strange about this engagement event. After all, engagements usually involve the families of both parties.
However, this engagement looks more like a couple who ran away because they didn't get their family's blessing.
In theory, there was no way that a runaway couple could have an engagement ceremony, but it was possible because the lady was a lady of the Rothschild Family, the daughter of Evelyn, the President of the Bank of London.
Few people knew that Jane's status in the Rothschild Family was quite prestigious despite her father's death.
"From the looks of you, you all seem to be curious about me," David said again, showing a faint smile while the people who heard his words laughed lightly.
"I'm actually just a commoner," he added, mentioning his background to keep people guessing.
When this information was mentioned, quite a few fell silent with uncertain expressions.
This was unexpected by almost everyone, but some had speculated about this.
Since everyone here was from the elite and tended not to accept ordinary people as partners for their families, so they felt that there was something improper in this engagement.
David just smiled when he saw their reactions.
Of course, they would not think of criticizing him. He might be from the commoners, but right now he gave off a very strong dominant impression plus Jane was standing beside him as if she would support him no matter what.
"I just want to say this. It might cause trouble, but believe me I'm not afraid of any trouble," he added with a confident smile before looking at Jane.
"Honey, do you want to talk too?" he asked her.
