Chapter 279: Thunderstorm, Megatsunami (1)

Wu Yehao thought for a moment before replying, "Ah, he also said that anyone who goes to Fengcheng Headquarters is his subordinate, including you."

Yao Yuechuan gritted his teeth and growled, "His dream is really beautiful!"

Fu Zongshang sneered after hearing Wu Yehao's report and said, "It seems our speculation is correct. Gao Shuwei's attempt to assassinate Miss Yao Ran instead of bringing her back is because he wants to take over the company."

Hearing this, one of the senior officers asked, "Commander Fu, since Gao Shuwei likes to assassinate his enemies, should we send someone to assassinate him and let him taste his own medicine?"

Fu Zongshang shook his head and replied, "Chairman Yao personally raised Gao Shuwei and trained him to serve as one of Miss Yao Ran's direct subordinates. With his intelligence, influence, and capabilities, do you think we can assassinate him?"

"Not to mention Gao Shuwei himself-just dealing with his group of black wolves would be challenging. If we want to get rid of him, we will need a careful plan."

The others nodded in agreement at his words.

Since a direct attack wasn't an option, Fu Zongshang decided to focus on secretly investigating Fengcheng Headquarters to uncover Gao Shuwei's plans. As for other matters, it is best to wait until they manage to invite Yao Ran back before deciding.

With that in mind, he turned to a young man wearing a black mask sitting beside Wu Yehao and said, "Captain Peng, I'm assigning you the task of investigating Gao Shuwei's plans."

As one of the captains of the investigation division, Peng Yuchi was the best candidate for this secret mission.

In the past, he discovered Yao Ran's existence and exposed Lan Guangwei's schemes and crimes as soon as he joined the team. Considering Peng Yuchi's strong investigative abilities, Fu Zongshang was sure he could uncover Gao Shuwei's plans.

Peng Yuchi nodded and accepted the order, "Yes, Commander."

Fu Zongshang then turned to Shao Xinmin and said, "Professor Shao, I will allocate more resources and send additional ability users to assist you with your research. Please speed up the research on the newly discovered abilities. I hope to see the results next month."

Shao Xinmin nodded, "Yes, Commander."

As if remembering something, Fu Zongshang added, "And remember-don't harm the ability users. They might be humanity's only hope for survival in the future."

"Don't worry. We only need a small amount of their blood for samples." Shao Xinmin replied with a smile.

Hearing this, Fu Zongshang felt relieved, "Good. Let's conclude this meeting here. Everyone, please return to your tasks."

The captains and senior officers stood up, saluted Fu Zongshang, and left the meeting room one after another.

Noticing that Yao Yuechuan was still seated, Fu Zongshang asked, "Yuechuan, why haven't you left?"

Yao Yuechuan pouted and complained, "Uncle Fu, you have assigned everyone else a mission. What about me? Why don't I get one?"

Fu Zongshang rolled his eyes at Yao Yuechuan and said, "You just came back and haven't recovered from your injuries yet. Besides, I don't have a suitable mission for you at the moment."

Seeing Yao Yuechuan's dissatisfied expression, Fu Zongshang added, "Didn't you just gain an ability? Since you have nothing better to do, you can help Professor Shao with her research."

Leaving those words behind, he left the meeting room without looking back at the gloomy Yao Yuechuan. Left with nothing to do, Yao Yuechuan had no choice but to head to the laboratory to donate his blood.

While everyone in the Yao Security Company was busy with their new missions, the survivors in Haicheng City focused on filtering seawater.

With sixty percent of its territory bordering the sea, Haicheng City had become a destination for survivors from other areas seeking water. Even though the filtered seawater tasted bitter and astringent, it was better than dying of thirst. As a result, more survivors arrived in Haicheng City every day.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

Today, the survivors awoke after sunset and began their usual task of filtering seawater. As they worked numbly, like mindless puppets, a child gazed at the horizon and tugged at her mother's dirty clothes.

"Mom, is that a mushroom? Can I have a bite of it?" The child asked, her hoarse voice tinged with hope.

Her mother poured seawater into a small pot, closed the lid, and set it to boil to filter the water without answering the child.

The child tugged on her mother's clothes again and hoarsely said, "Mom, the mushroom is growing bigger."

Exhausted and thirsty, the woman barely had the energy to respond. Still, she glanced in the direction her daughter was pointing.

On the distant horizon, dense clusters of clouds rose and combined into a giant anvil hanging in the sky. Their bases were dark, their tops flattened. Lightning crackled across the sky, spreading like a spiderweb and illuminating the dark sea below.

The woman stared at the thunderclouds and stunned for a long time before her eyes lit up.

She held her daughter's frail body, her voice trembling as she said, "Baby, that is not a mushroom. Those are rain clouds. It's going to rain soon, and we will have water to drink." The child's face fell at the mention of rain instead of food. But the thought of drinking water cheered her.

She licked her cracked lips and asked, "Mom, can I drink more water this time?"

The woman's eyes reddened, but she had no tears left to shed. Hugging her daughter tightly, she nodded and whispered, "Yes, my baby. When it rains, I will let you drink as much as you

want."

Hearing her mother's promise, the child smiled and nestled into her mother's arms, her eyes fixed eagerly on the approaching rainclouds.

Like that pair of mother and daughter, other survivors stopped their work to watch the distant thunderclouds, their faces filled with hope. In just minutes, the dark clouds grew larger and got closer to the coastline.

But while the survivors hoped for rain, those who understood the actual danger of the incoming storm were already packing their belongings.
