Chapter 61: Making a Little Bet With Aunt Hu
Chapter 61: Making a Little Bet With Aunt Hu
PR: Jae
Every time the Hu family were transporting flowers, the villagers would ask how much they had earned. Then the Hu family would modestly say that they had not earned much, but the Hu family rarely did farm work. They only planted a few mu of rice, and didn’t plant anything else when there were more than ten people in the Lao Hu family.
Where did the money to support them come from?
Wasn’t it from growing flowers?
Su Danhong and Mother Ji went over, and they met the Hu family’s Lao Si. The Hu family’s Lao Si was born when his parents were old and the Lao Da, Lao Er, and Lao San of the Hu family had all got married and settled down, and their children were not young.
There were two other women in the Hu family, both of whom were married.
But Uncle Hu and Aunt Hu had a lot of descendants. There were no less than 12 people in their family. Their household was not small.
“Oh, Xiao Hu, are you on vacation? Is your mother here?” Mother Ji spoke up with a smile.
When Hu Yitian saw Su Danhong’s smooth, beautiful face that was like peach blossoms, the 17-year-old half-grown boy's face turned red. However, he was quick-witted and said, “She’s at home. Aunt, please go there.”
“Then show us the way,” Mother Ji said and continued smiling.
“Okay.” Hu Yitian nodded and led them there.
Hu Yitian was in his first year at the high school in Jiangshui City. He rarely came back home. Seeing this half-grown boy, Su Danhong felt that it would be good if her child grew up to be this old.
“Mom, aunt and sister-in-law are here,” Hu Yitian said.
Aunt Hu came out. She was particularly gentle and her complexion was nice because she took care of the flowers all the year round and was seldom busy with farm work. Aunt Hu was essentially different from an ordinary old woman.
“You came. Come and sit down. Yitian, go and get a chair for your aunt and sister-in-law,” Aunt Hu said with a smile.
Mother Ji said declined at once.
Su Danhong also politely agreed with Mother Ji.
Hu Yitian still went to get the chairs. They sat down and said a few polite words to Aunt Hu before they arrived at their main purpose.
“Aunt Hu, I came here today because I want to ask you if there are any flowers that I can buy from you,” Su Danhong explained.
Aunt Hu knew what her intentions were as soon as she heard it. Many people in the village were jealous of her family's source of income.
“The orchard is set up, and I heard that you are raising sheep and chickens next year. Growing flowers is a delicate job. Wouldn’t you be too busy?” Aunt Hu questioned.
“We will be a little busy next year, but that's something Jianyun will take care of. I just want to find something to do when I don’t have to take care of the child at home.” Su Danhong smiled.
Aunt Hu looked at her and said, “There are many people in the village who want to plant flowers like Aunt. It's not that Aunt doesn’t want to give them seeds for it, but it’s because seeds are not cheap. A bag of good chrysanthemum seeds costs three yuan, and one of even better quality one costs five yuan. It’s also not certain that they will grow well. Even if you plant them, it’s not certain if they will bloom. Many people in the village say that Aunt has cheated them, but aunt gave them seeds that were at the market value, and did not make a cent off of them.”
Su Danhong nodded. “Aunt, I understand, please believe me. However, I can’t speak for others. The spider mum flowers1, the red osmanthus flowers2, and the purple tree peonies3 are very precious as well as the two colored peonies4 and phoenix flowers5. I have a high regard for these precious flowers in my heart. How about we make a bet?”
“You know about these flowers?” Aunt Hu looked at her in surprise.
“I only know a little bit, but I do have some skills in growing flowers. Aunt is already growing seedlings, isn't she? I wonder if you can show me?” Su Danhong smiled.
“Okay, follow Aunt.” Aunt Hu saw her as an equal and brought her to the Lao Hu family’s greenhouse without any objections.
The weather was cold now, so it was not easy to grow flowers outside and they now needed to be planted in a greenhouse. It was obvious that their greenhouse was something they learned to build when their family worked for the landlord's house. It was really well built.
Su Danhong looked around, and was not stingy with the praises.
Aunt Hu was very happy to hear this. She thought that there was no need to say much about her greenhouse, since most people would not understand. But obviously, Jianyun’s wife, who people said was blessed by the Great Fox Immortal, understood how it worked. Aunt Hu felt proud after being praised by someone knowledgeable about greenhouses.
After looking around, Su Danhong stood next to several flower seedlings and said, “But these flower seedlings are not growing very well.”
“It is true that those are not growing well. I am afraid they will not be able to produce good flowers." Aunt Hu was basically certain that she understood how growing flowers work. Unlike Mother Ji, who was standing to the side with a confused look and did not understand at all since she had done farm work all her life.
But Su Danhong could see what the problem was at once.
“Will Aunt Hu believe it if I can make these four chrysanthemums pots bloom at a quality that is the same as the flowers in your greenhouse in August next year?” Su Danhong questioned.
Aunt Hu raised her eyebrow and looked at her. “Do you want to compete with Aunt?”
Su Danhong smiled. “If I win, then Aunt, you will provide me with all the flowers I want for free. I will be responsible for growing them and you will sell them. Anyway, Aunt has the connections to sell them. How about we split it fifty-fifty?”
Aunt Hu smiled back. “That’s not a problem. Aunt will promise you. But what if you lose?”
“If I lose to aunt, then I can give aunt 20% of the orchard,” Su Danhong replied.
Mother Ji was startled. “Danhong, the orchard is too valuable.”
Aunt Hu did not say anything and continued to look at Su Danhong with a smile.
Su Danhong said with a warm tone, “Mother, are you worried?”
“It’s not about if Mother is worried or not. It's just that your Aunt Hu and Uncle Hu have worked with flowers all their lives. How can you beat them?” Mother Ji clarified at once.
“But if I win, we will get free flowers in the future, and Aunt Hu will help us sell them. This deal is not bad,” Su Danhong said.
Mother Ji was extremely anxious.
What does she mean “not bad”? And it’s split fifty-fifty to help sell the flowers. Did she not think about how many things will need to be done to sell the flowers?
“Aunt, it's settled. I'll write you a letter of commitment later,” Su Danhong said to Aunt Hu.
“I don't need the letter of commitment. I can trust you as well as the Lao Ji family,” Aunt Hu said. “I’ll have Lao Si deliver the flower seedlings to you later.”
“Okay,” Su Danhong said happily.
After they talked for a while, Su Danhong went home with Mother Ji.
As soon as they arrived home, Mother Ji could not bear it any longer and said, “Danhong, how can you agree to such a thing?”
“Mother, the orchard on the mountain and the vegetables that can grow very well in the yard without fertilizer are all thanks to me. I won't fight a battle that I'm not sure about. Mother, just believe me this time,” Su Danhong said.
When Mother Ji saw how serious she looked, the tension on her mind was alleviated to an extent. It looks like this was the Great Fox Immortal’s idea. Otherwise, with Danhong’s personality, she would not speak up. Danhong also knows this very well.
“Can you really grow it?” Mother Ji asked..
“I can.” Su Danhong nodded.
Soon, Hu Yitian was heard outside the door. He used a small wooden car to transport four flower pots filled with flower seedlings.
“Thank you for your trouble,” Su Danhong said and smiled at him.
