Chapter 71 - New Years Gift
Chapter 71 - New Year’s Gift
In the Zheng family kitchen, the two chefs sent by the housekeeping were bustling about. He YiJun was also there, calling out instructions and inspecting all the dishes. One of the chefs couldn’t help but complain to her: “Miss, why did you suddenly add so many dishes without telling us in advance, ah. We don’t have enough raw ingredients to do it all.”
He YiJun’s attitude towards these chefs was nowhere near as accomodating as her attitude was to the Zheng family. She frigidly replied: “If we don’t have enough ingredients, then we’ll buy some more. These dishes are what the guests want to eat. Just prepare the dishes, money is not a problem.”
The chef couldn’t retort in the face of money. In the end, he could only sigh: “So lavish.”
He YiJun didn’t want to talk to him anymore and coldly turned away. As she did so, she saw Chen ShiYi and Shao SiJia enter the kitchen.
He YiJun’s expression immediately transformed. She approached the two women and enthusiastically said: “Sister ShiYi, why did you come here? There’s a lot of oil and smoke in the kitchen, ah. You’d better sit in the hall instead.”
Chen ShiYi waved a hand and replied: “I would rather smell the oil and smoke than listen to Old Zheng talk about his tea collection.”
He YiJun covered her smile as she heard her words. “Don’t say that. Just because you dislike it doesn’t mean his hobby has no merit. So many other people would pay great amounts of money just to have the chance to talk tea with him..it’s just that he’s often too lazy to do so.”
Chen ShiYi shook her head. “Too lazy? No, its because he’s not stupid. Old Zheng knows that those people don’t actually have any interest in his hobbies. Instead, they want to get favors off of him.”
He YiJun replied: “That’s true. In the end, those people aren’t one of us. How can Old Zheng trust outsiders?”
Chen ShiYi sighed then sadly replied: “But I’m now an outsider. Why do I still have to listen to him talk!”
After a pause, Chen ShiYi continued with an indignant tone: “And even worse, he didn’t even spare YaZhi! He refuses to let him go.”
Shao SiJia chimed in and ridiculed: “Why do I get the feeling that it was my own dad that didn’t want to let Mr. Zheng go.”
In Shao SiJia’s point of view, it was Lin YaZhi who kept bothering Zheng BuLu and kept egging the man on. It was Zheng BuLu who was trying to satisfy Lin YaZhi, ah.
Chen ShiYi became silent for a while. Suddenly feeling worried, she said: “Don’t tell me...is YaZhi going to become another Zheng BuLu?”
When He YiJun heard Chen ShiYi’s words, she became sullen. She hated Chen ShiYi the most. Chen ShiYi easily obtained something others could only dream of, but she didn’t cherish it at all. He YiJun really wanted to shout at Chen ShiYi, but she valiantly left her smile on her face. “Sister ShiYi, Old Zheng might be a little unruly, but how can you be considered an outsider? Even if you’ve divorced Old Zheng, you will always be PingQing’s mother, right?”
At the mention of Zheng PingQing, Chen ShiYi immediately discarded any thought of Zheng BuLu. With a joyful expression in her face, she said: “Well, you say that, but I did fail as a mother all those years ago. Fortunately, PingQing doesn’t blame me...”
He YiJun’s heart thumped, and she fumbled with the plate she had been holding. After calming down, she casually said: “Speaking of which, I’ve been trying to mend the relationship between Old Zheng and PingQing these past two years, and thankfully, PingQing finally opened up. I was quite relieved....”
Thinking about the past, Chen ShiYi felt regretful. “Me and Old Zheng have been too busy these past few years. You had to take care of PingQing on your own; it must’ve been hard.”
He YiJun smiled. “But I’m part of the Zheng family now. And even when I wasn’t, I was getting a salary. I just treated it as a part-time job.”
He YiJun organized the plates of food and, as if she had just thought of it, asked: “But I’m really curious. Why did PingQing suddenly decide to change?”
Chen ShiYi’s face changed when she heard the question. After some hesitation, she sighed and opened her mouth. But just as she was about to speak, Zheng BuLu’s voice could suddenly be heard from outside the kitchen. “ShiYi, your cooking skills are abysmal, ah. Don’t hinder the people cooking in the kitchen. Come out and have tea with Brother Lin and me.”
The interrupted Chen ShiYi couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Zheng BuLu continued: “It’s enough that YiJun is in the kitchen, ah. She’s quite skilled; you don’t need to interfere, ShiYi.”
He YiJun: “...” What does Zheng BuLu mean?
On the one hand, she didn’t want to be continuously interrupted by other people coming in and out of the kitchen, but on the other hand, she was upset with Zheng BuLu’s tone that implied that it was natural for her to work. He YiJun’s mood soured.
But Chen ShiYi didn’t seem to realize the situation and inadvertently added fuel to the fire. She looked at He YiJun and embarrassed, said: “Old Zheng is right. I’m not as proficient in the kitchen as you are. I’ll go. I don’t want to hinder you.”
She then left the kitchen.
He YiJun: “.......”
She stifled an angry huff and instead focused on Shao SiJia’s chatter. He YiJun put on an encouraging expression as Shao SiJia began talking about her one week stay in the city. After a while, Shao SiJia complimented her: “Auntie is really virtuous, ah. Stepmother doesn’t have any cooking skills. Not that I blame her, of course. I blame my dad for doting on her too much. Dad doesn’t let her even take one step into the kitchen, so any opportunity for her to improve disappears.”
He YiJun: “..” Was she complaining on behalf of Chen ShiYi or showing off, ah?
He YeJun was so angry. But she had to continue to smile. “How can it be the same? Sister ShiYi has had a good life since she was young. She never had to do any chores when she lived with her parents.”
“So that’s how it is.” Shao SiJia made an expression of surprise. “I’ve never seen her do any sort of chore after she married my dad. I guess that’s how it is when it comes to intellectuals. Sigh, my poor father. He has to go to work and do all the housework too.”
He YiJun deliberately blackened Chen ShiYi’s image towards her stepdaughter and felt much better. She said: “Since your father is willing to do all the housework, things are probably fine. It’s a different era now, ah. A wife doesn’t necessarily need to know how to do housework.”
“You’re absolutely right!” Shao SiJia very much agreed with He YiJun’s words. “Stepmother is good the way she is. I’ll strive to have the same lifestyle!”
He YiJun: “.....” This little girl...was she reproaching her stepmother or not? Youngsters nowadays are so interchangeable, ah!
He YiJun would very much like to take back what she said!
“I’m not going to continue to bother you, ah. I’ll get out of your way and go back to my stepmother.” Shao SiJia quickly left the kitchen, her parting words making He YiJun angry.
When Shao SiJia returned to the living room, she saw Lin YaZhi and Zheng BuLu sitting even closer together.
Lin YaZhi’s expression was still somewhat unhappy, but he was still continuing to prompt Zheng BuLu: “Didn’t you say you wanted to tell me about your wine collection? Don’t look at ShiYi, ah. She doesn’t know anything about wine.”
When Chen ShiYi left for the kitchen, Zheng BuLu became distracted. He eventually stopped paying attention to Lin YaZhi’s talk about his research, and instead, ended up focusing on the sounds coming from the kitchen. In the end, Zheng BuLu even called out to Chen ShiYi and asked her to come back. To Lin YaZhi, this kind of behavior had the echoes of loving affection.
Lin YaZhi felt uncomfortable, but he also wanted to show that he was a generous man. If he acted like a domineering man in front of all these people, he would only make Zheng BuLu feel obligated to protect Chen ShiYi from him.
If this happened, his sacrifice to endure drowsiness while pretending to be interested in Zheng BuLu’s hobbies would be all for naught.
However, this was his own private thoughts. In the eyes of others, this scene was quite spicy.
Especially towards Chen ShiYi, who felt like she was in a horror movie. She was the current wife, ah, but unexpectedly, her current and ex-husband were hitting it off. Why was she the one getting jealous, ah?
Chen ShiYi: ?????
She was beginning to doubt the authenticity of her second marriage.
Shao SiJia touched her chin. “I didn’t know my father was interested in such things, ah?”
After some thought, she concluded: “I guess father didn’t want to let go of Mr. Zheng!”
Chen ShiYi’s teeth itched like mad. She felt like she couldn’t stand another second of this image in front of her. She flicked her sleeve and turned away. “You can go ahead and talk with them. I want to look around.”
......
At the terrace.
Lin Qian was sitting on top of Zheng PingQing. “Wait another six months, see if I don’t ride you to death.”
Zheng PingQing, of course, promptly hit the snake with a stick and sat up to hug Lin Qian: “Draw up a contract right now and write that down, ah! Immediately, immediately!”
Lin Qian grabbed at Zheng PingQing’s ear and pulled. “I always honor my promises, so you’d better seize this opportunity to toughen up your body a bit more.”
Zheng PingQing’s eyes began to turn hot. “You can rest assured, as long as you can carry on, I will keep breathing.”
Lin Qian: “...” Kinky, so kinky! But we can’t do anything but talk, ah.
After a raucous few minutes, the two men managed to calm down. The two began to discuss He YiJun, and naturally, Zheng PingQing ended up voicing all his complaints to his lover.
Lin Qian asked: “Your father knows about He YiJun? and he’s still allowing her to stay??”
Zheng PingQing thought for a moment, then replied: “My dad might look magnanimous on the surface, but truthfully, he’s actually a very narrow-minded man. My guess is, he’s deliberately keeping He YiJun close to him for something.”
Lin Qian sent Zheng BuLu a thumbs up. “No wonder he’s succeeding in the business world. He’s a very ruthless man.”
“Let’s stop talking about this.” Zheng PingQing was clearly not in the mood to waste time talking about those adults. Zheng PingQing turned around and took something out of his pocket, then put his hands behind him as he looked at Lin Qian. “I have a new year’s gift for you. Guess: Is it in my right hand or my left?”
Afraid that Lin Qian wouldn’t take it seriously, Zheng PingQing stressed: “If you don’t think about it properly and guess wrong, you won’t receive your gift.”
Lin Qian didn’t hesitate as he answered: “Your left.”
Zheng PingQing: “...” His boyfriend is too reliant on his love, ah! He just does whatever he wants!
Seeing Zheng PingQing’s scowl, Lin Qian raised a brow. “What? Did I guess wrong?”
Zheng PingQing silently moved the gift from his right hand to his left. With a forced smile, he said: “How is that possible, ah. Of course you got it right.”
Lin Qian stepped forward and gave him a quick kiss. His eyes were crescents as he said: “We really have a tacit understanding, ah. Every time we guess something about the other, we get it right.”
He then reached out for the gift: “Pass it here.”
Zheng PingQing’s mood had gotten much better. He took out his left hand from behind him and presented the bank card he was holding. With bright eyes, he said: “Didn’t you want to start a company with Ke MuZi? This is my dad’s new year’s gift, two million yuan. It should be enough for your initial start-up.”
These past few months, Lin Qian had been giving Ke MuZi suggestions on some systems he could try to code. He was afraid that the bored Ke MuZi would start doing some shady things online, so Lin Qian had been providing him with many ideas.
Truthfully, Lin Qian doesn’t know much about coding and programming. But he knew the future. Although Lin Qian didn’t know how to code, he could provide some details about some systems or programs that will crop up many years later.
So he would come up with ideas, and Ke MuZi was in charge of implementing these ideas. At first, Lin Qian had just wanted to keep Ke MuZi occupied. Now that Ke MuZi had gotten a taste of hacking into databases, Lin Qian worried that the idle Ke MuZi would someday hack into the more sensitive systems like the Bureau. But unexpectedly, Ke MuZi really deserved his title as the ‘Genius of the Internet.’ After Lin Qian spouted out some random ideas, Ke MuZi went home, studied, experimented, and eventually, actually developed these programs. Although they weren’t perfect, these programs were revolutionary at this time.
So after discovering that Ke MuZi had even greater capabilities than he initially thought, Lin Qian had the idea to start a company and seize the opportunity to work with him.
Of course, in Ke MuZi’s eyes, all these fantastic ideas Lin Qian had seemingly come up with was proof that Lin Qian was also a true genius.
The two of them hit it off, and they even got the paperwork all ready. It was just that because they were too young and didn’t have any foundations, finding the opportunity to gather start-up funds was hard.
However, that was just Ke MuZi’s own worries.
“I’ll go stockpile all funds from my other cards and transfer it to that card. That should be another one or two million.” Zheng PingQing rubbed Lin Qian’s fingers. “Use the money on this card first. If it’s not enough, I’ll go hassle my dad.”
Lin Qian accepted the bank card and felt sad that even though they were still high school students, some people can just casually take out a few million yuan anyway.
He couldn’t help but tease: “I don’t know whether to be moved or jealous first.”
“Of course you should be moved. You should be happy, ah.” Zheng PingQing laughed. “Everything I own is yours. That includes my dad...”
Lin Qian staunchly refused. “That wouldn’t be polite.”
Zheng PingQing insisted. “No, you have to accept my dad too.”
Lin Qian let out a helpless sigh and looked at his lover fondly. “I honestly don’t need so many fathers, ah. But for you, I’ll recognize it.”
And so, without his father’s consent, Zheng PingQing had successfully transferred Zheng BuLu over to his lover. Zheng PingQing looked at Lin Qian and asked: “Do I get a new year’s gift?”
Lin Qian stepped back and put his hands inside his coat pockets. With a smile, he asked: “Your gift is in my coat pocket. Guess which pocket it’s in?”
He didn’t forget to emphasize: “Think about it properly. If you guess wrong, you won’t receive your gift.”
Zheng PingQing: !!!!
Unlike Lin Qian’s gift, his gift was in Lin Qian’s pockets! Lin Qian won’t be able to transfer the gift if he gets it wrong!
Zheng PingQing nervously looked towards Lin Qian’s pockets. “Give me a hint, no, just indicate it to me clearly, ah.”
Lin Qian shook his head. “Nope.”
Zheng PingQing stared at Lin Qian with accusing eyes and complained: “Is your love for me that shallow?”
Lin Qian: “...No, it’s very deep.”
Zheng PingQing wrung his hands together. “I believe you.”
Lin Qian gave him a reassuring look. “Don’t worry, your boyfriend is very trustworthy.”
Despite all this, Zheng PingQing hesitated for a very long time. In the end, he finally said: “The left side.”
Lin Qian’s eyes bent. “Congratulations, you’re right.”
“Our hearts really are connected!” Zheng PingQing didn’t wait for Lin Qian to take out his hand and directly reached inside Lin Qian’s pocket. When he did so, he touched a small metal ring.
Zheng PingQing’s heart thumped and he looked straight into Lin Qian’s eyes.
Lin Qian was also looking up at him.
Zheng PingQing slowly took out his hand from Lin Qian’s pocket, revealing a shimmering silver ring.
Then, Lin Qian took out a similar ring from his right coat pocket. “I didn’t lie. I just love you very, very much. Just like you.”
Just like he was guaranteed to receive his gift, Zheng PingQing was guaranteed to receive a ring.
Zheng PingQing picked Lin Qian off the ground and angrily said: “Who allowed you to present the ring first!!! I was the one who was supposed to propose! What does this ring mean? If you’re trying to rob my proposal away from me, then you can forget it!”
“You can forget it!” Zheng PingQing muttered again.
Lin Qian calmly replied: “Oh, I see. Then give me back the ring.”
Zheng PingQing threw Lin Qian onto the sofa then pressed him down. “Forget it. I’ll give you some face just this once. I’ll reluctantly accept it, ah.”
Lin Qian wrapped his arms around Zheng PingQing’s neck and smiled. “Thank you for humoring me. I’m so lucky to have such a generous boyfriend, ah.”
