Chapter 5 5. The Best Demon Hunter! [1]
Sixteen years after the first demon invasion was discovered by humans…
"Hey! Kevin! You going to the royal academy?!"
Andrew asked while running and screaming.
"You don't have to scream while you are near, you know?"
Kevin said as he saw Andrew approach closer.
"Huff… K-Kevin you pig! Why didn't tell me beforehand?"
In a crude, villager's voice Andrew asked Kevin, his best friend.
"Well, after awakening, they saw my affinities and said not to tell anyone, they all were <B> ranked affinities after all."
With a smug look on his face, Kevin answered.
"B-b rank?! S-so that's why… well I got D rank affinities…"
Scratching his head Andrew shyly answered.
"But that's not important!"
Andrew suddenly remembered something.
"You heard that Alex's village got raided by demons and demon worshippers!?"
Kevin's happy gaze and the gentle smile turned into killing intent and his eyes filled with disgust the moment he heard 'demons.'
"Did grandpa and uncle John know about this?"
Kevin asked.
"Are you dumb or what Kevin? All the news is first given to the chieftain and then regulated across the village."
"Ah! Sorry, I forgot that. Those filthy demons make me lose my mind."
Facepalming himself, Kevin answered.
"I hope we both do our best in the academy and become the best demon hunters!"
Kevin changed the topic as he didn't want to continue the 'demon raid' related topic.
"Ah… about that Kevin… well, you see… my affinity is low… and I cannot afford the regular fees of royal academy… so I will become an adventurer."
Andrew answered, holding back his tears and smiling wryly.
It was a dream come true for anyone, whose affinities for any particular element were higher than C rank. And if all affinities were higher than C rank, then your life was set!
But those below rank C were treated as cannon fodders in demon hunting. So an adventurer was a better job for these people. After all, who wants to be just a stepping stone for others? No one.
"I can talk with grandpa you know? I can help you with admission and fees."
Kevin still tried to convince Andrew.
"N-no please don't! If I were to go to that academy, I will only be bullied or become a toy… it's better as an adventurer."
Andrew smiled and held Kevin's hands.
"Just when you become a great demon hunter, please… avenge my sister…A-as I am an incompetent son, brother, and human… I-I can't… e-even s-s-save m…"
Tears started flowing from Andrew's eyes.
Reminiscing over the past where his sister was kidnapped by demons and was never found again…
His parents who cursed him for letting her hand go died at the hands of demons in front of him.
If not for the reinforcement of the village, he was surely dead that day.
Not to mention his low affinities after awakening… He was sad, he lost all hope…
Kevin who saw this placed a hand over Andrew's shoulder and said.
"You are not incompetent Andrew! Stop spitting bullshit. And do you think I will need to avenge them? I know you alone can beat hundreds of higher demons on your own!"
Kevin said while slightly punching Andrew's chest.
Andrew was a seventeen years old boy. Around six feet in height, light blue hair, purple eyes, and a perfectly toned and chiseled body build.
Over the past many years, Andrew was training rigorously to become the best demon hunter in the kingdom.
He was the best martial artist in their entire brown town.
But just because his magic affinities were low, he was rejected from the royal academy's scholarship program.
"You bet Kevin, I will hunt down those filthy things."
Wiping his tears Andrew showed a beautiful smile to Kevin.
"So? When are you leaving for the academy?"
Andrew asked.
"By the end of this week. That is the earliest carriage I got. And there is still over a month before the joining date of the royal academy. So let's have some fun, shall we?"
And just like that Andrew and Kevin went back to the town.

A week passed by and today was the time for Kevin to leave the Brown town, after saying his goodbyes to everyone he sat in the carriage.
As the adopted grandson of the chieftain, to his sendoff everyone in the village was present.
Looking at elderly people, shopkeepers, children, his family, and his best friend waving at him and sending him off for a long journey, Kevin was not able to hold back his tears.
The scent of soil, the calm of trees, the sound of the river he would miss everything.
His new life in the capital city was awaiting ahead.
He wanted to become a demon hunter and slay those filthy creatures but that future was still far ahead. For now, he wanted to enjoy this peace.
Looking back at those memories of his town, a beautiful smile appeared on his face.
Brown was a village not long ago, however, after its surrounding villages merged with it, in the fear of demons, village Brown became a town.
Kevin had witnessed everything.
After the people and the town were out of his sight, Kevin stopped waving and sat down, looking outside the carriage and his surroundings.
…
Some time passed and the calm wind suddenly became chilly. The clouds started to darken and a subtle bad feeling was spread across.
Kevin who had a <B> rank affinity for wind and space noticed this subtle change.
Kevin frowned.
The chilly air was giving him a bad feeling.
"Mister, can we stop for a moment."
He asked the coachman of the carriage.
"Hm? Sure. My horse also needs some break, I guess?"
The coachman was not sure of Kevin's sudden actions, but he had to listen to the boy, as he was the chieftain's grandson.
Coachman parked the carriage and gave his horse a break.
Kevin looked in the direction of his town.
Some time passed as he tried to sense the feeling.
"Um… chieftain's grandson? Shall we leave? We will once again have to stop at nigh-…"
Before the coachman could complete his sentence, a sound was heard by Kevin.
Splurt-
Thud-
The coachman's body fell to the ground with a thud sound.
"H-huh?"
Kevin stuttered and looked at the source of the sound.
It was at this moment, that he understood the reason behind the discomfort he felt.
"Kreeeee!"
With a loud and creepy screech, the red-colored thing in front of Kevin attacked him.
Caught off guard, Kevin was late to adapt to the situation. And he took the blow of the creature's claw.
"Ugh!"
Balancing his body again, Kevin groaned but didn't waste any time and immediately released two magic spells.
"Space crumble!"
"Holy Spear!"
"Kreeeee!"
The red-colored thing had no brain to understand to dodge the attack. It was a <G> rank lowly demon after all.
It took the attack head-on and died the moment the holy spear pierced its body.
As space crumble blocking its all paths, the demon died helplessly.
"Huff… huff… filthy demon…"
Kevin spit on the demon's body.
But he realized something and he looked in his town's direction.
"Shit!"
He immediately grabbed the horse and without taking anything from the carriage, he dashed towards the town.
"Fuck! It's a demon raid!!!!"
