Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Dyno
As Jett walked back, he thought to himself, 'This was an eventful day. Fought off some terrorists, had an audience with the king till midnight, found out more about my parents, copied two skills from the king himself, and even made a checkpoint right in the royal treasury.' He started smiling with confidence.
'Although I wasn't expecting most of what happened, my plan to survive this world is going better than expected.'
As he got closer to the Emberville mansion, he decided to inspect the egg. "It looks really cool. I wonder what kind of pet I'll get if the egg has a skill of its own."
From the moment he claimed ownership of the egg, it became an item only he could see. He realized this when Ray and the others didn't notice the golden egg hovering around him.
[Gluttony]
[Highest Grade Pet Egg]
[Duration: 02:01:00 years]
"Two years." Jett muttered. "That's how long it'll take to hatch. Well, I did expect that since the concept of pets only started after we got to the academy."
Jett felt uneasy as he looked at the egg, but then he remembered he had a skill that worked better for inspection.
[Evil Eyes A]
- See hidden information overlooked during appraisal.
- See through all A Rank illusions and below.
- Detect Fire attributes.
- Detect Dark attributes.]
"Let's try that again," he said, activating the skill.
He looked at the egg and saw a new message appear below the previous one.
[Gluttony]
[Highest Grade Pet Egg]
[Duration: 02:01:00 years]
[Binding Successful]
[For a better result, subject needs a catalyst]
[Find any species you would like to use as a catalyst.]
Jett was caught off guard by the new information. 'Binding? Catalyst? If that's the case, then it's no longer a gacha. But I guess it's much better; I just have to decide what kind of pet I want.' His mind soon drifted off in thought. 'There are many mythical creatures to choose from.
A dragon would be nice. I can even get what I need from the royal treasury.'
As he pondered his options, he ran into Nerissa, who was just about to leave when she spotted him.
"Ah, there you are. I heard there was a terrorist attack, so I went searching for you, but I couldn't find you. Thank goodness you're alright." She waved at him as they approached each other.
"I'm fine, don't worry. Just don't mention it to Mother." He replied, asking her to keep her voice down. "Actually, I got something for you." He brought out a good-looking sword from his storage space.
It was a dark long sword with an even darker blade. Although it didn't give off any obvious ominous vibe, she could tell it was no ordinary sword. She could sense that it was forged with dark attributes and probably had some special functions.
"Oh my... Where the hell did you get this?" she asked, taking the sword and inspecting it. "It's even better than the one I currently use."
"That's a secret. You can't reject it; this is the first gift I've ever given you." He blushed as he turned away from her gaze while explaining, "I don't really know your preferences, but I figured this would be alright. If it isn't, then feel free to sell it."
"Aww, little brother is so cute," she cooed, hugging him so tight it felt more like a strangle than a hug.
"Sheesh, get off me already," he yelled, trying to push her off.
'He's gotten even stronger, almost comparable to the rumored Divine Lords,' she thought, feeling Jett's strength. Little did she know, he wasn't even pushing with all his might.
"Sorry about that. Speaking of gifts, I also got you something." She handed him a necklace decorated with a gem. "It's a special item with a protective function that activates when you pour Aura or Mana into it. If you ever get into deep trouble and think you can't escape, don't hesitate to use it."
"Thanks, I will." He looked at the necklace in astonishment. 'I know what this is. It's an ally summoning item.'
An ally summoning item was a rare artifact in WAR BOUND, used by players to teleport an ally to their designated position. It was invaluable in dire situations or when immediate backup was needed for a mission. Jett knew how hard these were to obtain in-game; sometimes players had to pay exorbitant amounts for one, as it was even more precious than a teleportation item.
"You'll be leaving tomorrow. Take care of yourself and don't cause Mother and Father any trouble. I'll try to visit as much as possible." She waved goodbye as she walked away. "Oh, and I couldn't find Father anywhere. Please tell him I've already gone back to my party."
'If "as much as possible" means "less than possible," then knock yourself out,' he thought. "But why give me such a gift? It must have been really hard to get."
Jett finally made it inside, where he found Finn pacing uneasily by the door.
"What's with you?" Jett asked, eyeing the pitiful-looking Finn.
"You're still alive? That's wonderful," Finn replied, trying to hide his displeasure at seeing him.
"Well, you don't really sound thrilled by that," Jett said, noticing Finn's expression. "Why are you here, though?"
"We have a guest, a really important one. He came here to see your mother," Finn replied, resuming his pacing.
Not bothered by this, Jett made for the door. "So? Who is this guest?"
"Leon Dyno," Finn quickly replied.
Jett stopped in his tracks and turned to look at Finn. "Dyno? As in the Dyno family?"
"Yes, that Dyno. I suppose even a country boy like you knows the name." Finn sighed in relief, realizing that Jett seemed to understand the gravity of the situation.
'Did she do something wrong? Nothing good ever comes out of associating with them,' Jett thought to himself.
Now reluctant to go inside, Jett decided it would be better to wait outside with Finn. This was understandable, as the Dyno family was one he wasn't too fond of in the novel. They were a ruthless and unforgiving noble family that did whatever they could to stay at the top. They were feared by all, even the royal household was wary of them.
What would someone from such a prestigious family want with his mother? That was all that went through Jett's mind. He wanted to walk in, but at the same time, he was hesitant and scared that he might accidentally put the Grifts on their bad side.
After a while of pondering, Jett decided to go in and assess the situation. Upon entry, he was stopped by a knight who looked nothing like anyone he had seen at the Emberville household.
"Leave him be," Avon gestured from where he sat.
"But sir…" the knight tried to protest.
A harsh voice quickly sounded, "You heard the man, now move."
Jett was finally allowed to walk in. He scanned the room as he walked straight to his mother. Those present were Avon, Eva, a man who had a striking resemblance to Eva, and four knights—two behind the man and another two at the door.
The atmosphere felt a bit tense the deeper he walked in. Their gazes were mostly on him, and for some unknown reason, he could sense a killing intent from someone in the room. It was suffocating, but he dared not act hastily.
'This must be the Dyno guy. He really looks like my mother, but why is that?' Jett stole quick glances at him.
"Jett, come over here," Eva called.
"Yes, Mother," Jett replied, walking faster to meet her.
"There's someone I need to introduce to you," she held him close while pointing at the stranger, "This is Sir Leon Dyno. He's my older brother, which makes him your uncle."
'You have got to be kidding me.' Jett's expectations dropped drastically, feeling betrayed somewhere along the line.
"So this is your kid? He looks more like an embarrassment to the Dyno name. It's a pity that you had to marry that buffoon excuse for a husband. Muscle with no brain—just pray he doesn't end up like his old man." Leon boasted as he indirectly bad-mouthed Jerry.
'We only just met, and I already feel like sending him to hell.' Jett was triggered. 'Who said anything about wanting to be part of the Dyno family, huh?'
This continued as Leon spouted more hateful things about them, causing the knights to laugh heartily while Eva and Avon asked him to restrain himself to no avail.
Before anyone noticed, a glass cup went flying towards Leon. He managed to stop it with wind magic, but the contents still spilled on his apparel.
"Don't you dare say something like that about my father," Jett yelled at him.
This enraged Leon, who forgot about his surroundings and sent Jett flying straight towards the wall.
'Crap, did I mess up this time?' Jett braced himself as he got closer to colliding face-first with the wall.
But he stopped moving mid-air. Everywhere went silent, and he could feel an ominous aura in the room.
'What just happened? Wait, is that… mother?' He looked back to see a sight he wasn't expecting.
