Chapter 59: Change of plans (3)
“Are you messing with me, Billy?” Luke asked. “I don’t know if I can survive another day in this hell and you want me to cross three hundred miles to search for your family? Three hundred miles of roads filled with zombies and monsters? I will have an easier time swimming in the Atlantic and reaching Italy.”
“I know, it will be hard, but if you survive until now, I am sure that you can keep doing it,” Billy said. “Besides, you can have vehicles and fuel lying around everywhere… please, Luke. I really need to confirm how they are. Help me with that, and if you find them, I will bring you to your parents, even if I have to throw away my position in the army by stealing an airplane.”
Helping Billy wasn’t the only problem, Luke would have to be guided by him whenever possible by using the radio transmitter, and it was too big for Luke to carry by himself. So, he would need a car. He couldn’t fight and drive at the same time, so he would need Amanda’s group’s help. His plans to ditch them away as soon as they leave the city will have to be postponed…
“Shit… the choppers and the hunters are being prepared, you only have a couple of minutes, Luke,” Billy said. “I will talk with you once I have the chance again, don’t die.”
Luke let out a long sigh. He had three options, follow what Billy said, steal an airplane and kidnap a pilot, or keep fighting and hope that at some point, he would obtain the skill book that would give him the skill to Fly. The second option would only cause more problems to his family, and the chances of the third working were almost nonexistent.
Going forward and turning left and returning to the road they came from wasn’t a good idea since it was a famous high road. Keep moving away from the horde would only make things harder for them, as well. However, when Luke turned around, he saw that a good part of the horde was returning to their original spot. Instinctively, they knew that they should stay clustering and blocking the path of the survivors.
“There are some fast food shops nearby and a hospital, head there to grab all the food you can get,” Luke said.
This time, Amanda and the others didn’t voice their opinions, they learned their lesson with Andrew’s group, and after seeing Luke fighting that day, they knew that they would have more chances of surviving by working with him. Besides, all of them leveled up eight times in a single afternoon. When midnight comes, they will have tons of gold coins to spend, and that was because Luke was the most reliable frontline they could find. As such, it was unavoidable that he would call the shots. He was the one in danger most of the time, after all.
“Where are we going to hide?” Amanda asked.
“We can’t stay too close to the main roads because it is dangerous, and we can’t stay too far away because it will make us waste time when we began to leave…” Luke replied and then rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “There is a park nearby one of our destinations, we can take shelter there since it is directly connected to 8th street.”
Amanda had no idea where Luke had studied a map of the city, but he seemed pretty confident, so it couldn’t be a lie. Without wasting any time, Stanley drove the car to the east side of the road. Once they reached the hospital, I jumped from the vehicle and told them to go and grab all the food they could find in the fast-food shops. It won’t be very nutritious, but they didn’t have many options.
Using his flashlight, Luke explored the hospital and quickly found the storage of the place. Since he had used many potions in the afternoon, there was plenty of room on his backpack, so Luke filled the interior with bandages, alcohol, and needles. Carrying potions was starting to become a waste of time since they were all low quality, and Luke could recover the same amount of all types of energy in just twenty-five seconds.
Maybe the potions would be better used in the hands of the others, or until Luke finds some spatial ring that Grants him the power to carry tons of things without feeling their weight. Nevertheless, once he filled his bag, Luke headed toward the others, and he found them carrying some potatoes, rice, and steak bags. When that happened, they began to hear the sound of the aircraft approaching in the distance.
“Let’s go…” Luke said. “Turn right on the crossroad three hundred meters ahead.”
Stanley followed that, and after moving for more than three hundred meters, they found the park that Luke had mentioned. There were no zombies or monsters around, so there was no reason for the place to be targeted. The group waited in silence for their chances, and then they began to hear the sounds of explosions in the distance and the sound of objects flying at fearsome speeds. It was hard to tell, but Luke could at least hear the sound of three choppers nearby… fortunately, all that experience won’t go to a single person.
“Do you think all the people of Miami already are…” Amanda said.
“Maybe 95% had already become zombies, but I doubt that everyone aside from us is dead,” Luke replied. “In this kind of situation, most people would hide and wait for help, while only a few would try to fight and find a way out by themselves. Among the second group, there are people who will get carried away with the possibility of gaining power, but more than half would act carefully and not move without a reason. Only fools and crazy people would try to leave the city.”
Amanda frowned when she heard that… but soon she understood why Luke called himself a fool. It was because he knew that risks were necessary to achieve great things. Most of the time, smart people let probability dictate their actions…
