Chapter 61 - The Sphinx
"So serious. Let us just move forward, or this drama queen will ruin our motivation.", Lucas said satirically.
"Drama Queen? First of all, where the hell did we get any motivation at all? We are here to make sure that you don't kill any one innocent. That quickly turned into us helping out to destroy an organization that might destroy the world. But the time limit is still all you. The only motivation I have to keep moving forward is that I can chain you up and see you wagging your goddamn tail.", Mu Chen scowled.
"Stop fighting, the both of you. Geez. Lucas, do you want us all to just leave? Since we came here, you have been getting into one fight or the other with all of us. What is wrong with you? Are you feeling okay? It is as if someone pumped in a lot of adrenaline and cortisol?", Praneeth looked at Lucas.
"I'm alright. What could possibly be wrong with me?", Lucas said as he took a step back.
"He has been acting weird the whole time.", Eva nodded.
"You are the one who is acting weird. I am just normal.", Lucas said.
"Honestly, I don't care enough about his mood swings. He is like a girl in her first period. My main goal is to get through this whole thing as fast as I can so that I can go back home and take a nice, sweet break.", Angela said.
"I don't want to concentrate on the latter part, but what Angela said is true. Let us deal with Lucas' intervention later. We have to keep moving. Who knows when Lucas might go hay wire and uncontrollable?", Michael said.
Praneeth sighed and nodded.
"Lucas in the front again, Michael in the back, let us form a diamond formation with Eva and Mu Chen at the sides, with Arthur in front of me. Remember, I am the weakest, and it is imperative that you protect me.", Praneeth said.
"Alright, alright.", Lucas nodded as all of the members shuffled around according to Praneeth's arrangement.
"Remember to conserve your energy. The heat will get to you eventually, so don't quicken the process.", Praneeth reminded everyone.
All of them started moving forward. They moved forward. The whole landscape was plain. It was dunes and dunes and nothing else. It seemed like they were dropped in the middle of the desert, and not given any way to come back.
"Do you have a compass at least? I know better than to trust a sun inside a building.", Lucas asked Mu Chen.
"Who the hell brings a compass to the middle of new york? Why don't you try your phone's compass?", Mu Chen asked Lucas.
"That's not a bad idea. Except, why the hell will you expect any signal here? Who knows which space we are in?", Lucas said.
"I called Arthur and the call did go through. So, I am pretty sure that we can try at the very least. It is not going to be a waste of time.", Raphael said.
"Not going to be a waste of time? Yeah right.", Lucas scoffed as he took out his phone from his pocket. He turned it on and opened the compass app.
He twirled it around.
"You guys try it as well, just to check if all of us get the same direction as north.", Lucas asked everyone.
"We should go east. That is best. I mean, it is good luck, so why the hell not?", Mu Chen said.
After a few nods from everyone, and a few confirmations regarding the phone's compass, all of them decided to go east. They turned to the right and walked straight.
Twenty minutes later.
"I don't know why they were stalling. Honestly, this is like not even letting us get out. I have no idea how they got this in the middle of new york, but I need their secret. This would make such a wonderful base.", Lucas muttered. They were still walking along the desert, with no aim, and nothing in sight.
They slowly walked uphill, and were at a peak, when Lucas spotted something.
"Looks like we got lucky. Finally, something to do.", Lucas said with excitement.
"What do you see?", Praneeth asked him.
"A Pyramid. Just like in Egypt. And the sphinx statue.", Lucas said.
"The sphinx statue? What do you mean? Why would anyone replicate that?", Praneeth asked.
"Maybe because they actually brought her in. I mean, she has never really been on the good side.", Lucas said.
"Don't jinx it. None of you exactly have the track record of being right.", Arthur said.
"Let us just go there. What else can we do? Every moment that we waste is disadvantageous to us, because we have to control Lucas after all of this.", Michael said.
The group started their descent down to the remains of the Egyptian civilization. Once they were there, they stopped in front of the Sphinx statue.
"It is so true to life, that if I didn't know any better, I would say that this is the Sphinx herself.", Lucas said as he touched the statue's feet.
"And you would be right.", a sound came from above them. Lucas stumbled back, and he looked up. The sphynx's eyes blinked once, and the whole statue rumbled.
"You have got to be kidding me. Lucas and Praneeth, you both will be shutting your goddamn mouths for the rest of this, whatever this is.", Arthur shouted at the both of them.
"How do you expect me to think that they would bring in the Sphinx here? She loves that Mount Phicum or something. To think that they could get her to move from there to here.", Lucas said with disbelief.
Praneeth was unmoving even in the face of a twenty meter statue. He calmly looked at it and said, "What are the trials that you wish to pose?"
