Chapter 56: Be Yourself, Be a Little More Wild
Chapter 56
Jing Yi insisted it was just a minor injury, not worth going to the hospital for. Only then did Jing Zeyou bring out the first aid kit and ice pack from home to apply cold compression.
"What happened?" Jing Zeyou asked while tending to her wound with the ice pack. His furrowed brow showed no sign of relaxing. Perceiving Jing Yi's thoughts, he glanced up at her.
"Tell me honestly."
Jing Yi pursed her lips and stammered, "I just accidentally ran into a group of people fighting. I wasn't careful and got hurt a bit."
"Where did you encounter them?"
Bringing this up made Jing Yi quite exasperated. "It was all because of that stupid navigation system. I don't know where it led me, which is how I ran into those people. Big brother, you should really remove that car's navigation system as soon as possible!"
Jing Zeyou found it amusing to see her little face looking so fierce. Even with such a severe hand injury, she still had the energy to worry about other things.
Jing Zeyou's hands were very gentle as he applied the ice. Jing Yi's eyes curved into crescents as she watched him seriously treating her wound.
[Big brother is just too gentle.]
Jing Zeyou's movements paused briefly before he continued asking: "Who were those people?"
Jing Yi recalled the man standing in front of the car. Her eyes narrowed slightly as a feeling of dislike rose in her heart, evident even in her tone of voice.
"Someone without manners!"
From Jing Yi's account, Jing Zeyou learned of a somewhat handsome man who appeared to be a wealthy young master with status, but was cold and impolite, being surrounded by thugs.
The men surrounding him were all brawn and no brains, only daring to wield wooden sticks.
Jing Zeyou glanced up at her. Did she expect them to be carrying knives instead?
But Jing Yi was too caught up in her story to notice Jing Zeyou's look.
"Big brother, you don't know how sour his face was! Even though I just stumbled in by accident, I still helped him take down two guys. Not only did he not thank me, he even questioned who sent me! Can you believe how ridiculous that is?!"
Jing Zeyou quietly applied medicine to her wound as he listened. Her words brought to mind images of various young masters from wealthy families.
The surrounded man must have some status in North river, otherwise he wouldn't have questioned Jing Yi's identity. But the fact that he didn't immediately recognize her meant he was either not important enough to know the Jing family, or he had only recently returned.
Recently returned... For some reason, a particular person suddenly flashed through Jing Zeyou's mind.
"Even though his bodyguards could have handled those men without me, I won't try to take credit for saving him. But he actually suspected I was sent by his enemies! With his attitude, even though he was kind of handsome, he really lets his imagination run wild!"
The more Jing Yi spoke, the more agitated she became. This was the first time since coming to the Jing family that Jing Zeyou had heard her talk so much. It seemed she really did dislike that person.
What started as asking her to explain the whole situation had now turned into her one-sided venting. Jing Zeyou could only listen silently to her complaints.
And just how handsome was this guy? She didn't forget to mention it even while complaining.
"Didn't you hear what those men called him?"
Jing Yi thought back to the scene. The leader was lying on the ground, weakly saying something like, "Mr. So-and-so, don't you want to know who sent me to teach you a lesson?"
"I couldn't hear clearly what he said, but it sounded like some kind of boss title."
The leader had already been beaten black and blue, so his voice was very faint. Jing Yi hadn't caught it clearly.
Jing Zeyou could only let it go, but he made a mental note to have someone look into it later. Although Jing Yi said it wasn't directed at her, it was better to be safe than sorry.
Looking at the wounds on Jing Yi's hand, he still felt concerned. "Are you sure you don't need to go to the hospital to have it checked?"
Jing Yi shook her head, looking unconcerned.
"It's fine, just a small injury. It'll heal in two or three days. Besides, didn't you already treat it for me, big brother?"
[When I first started learning Sanda, I got even worse injuries than this, and it was fine.]
Seeing how nonchalant Jing Yi was, a flash of heartache passed through Jing Zeyou's eyes.
If it were any other girl who had suffered such a severe injury, they probably wouldn't have been able to bear it. But she always tried to shoulder everything herself, afraid of worrying others.
Jing Zeyou suddenly felt a bit guilty.
Before Jing Yi came to the Jing family, Jing Zeyou had never thought he owed her anything. The family had provided money, and Grandma Jing had raised her.
But now he felt that perhaps because she grew up with just grandmother, without other close relatives, she had always been afraid of troubling others, unwilling to let anyone worry about her.
She even hid her dangerous hobbies, simply because she didn't want them to worry.
When she was living with Grandma Jing, he had never met Jing Yi. He only knew she was a girl grandmother was very fond of. Grandmother didn't often speak of Jing Yi, but Jing Zeyou could see her affection for the girl.
Jing Yi never owed the Jing family anything. On the contrary, it was because of the Jing family that she was drawn into this mess.
She could have been enjoying a carefree life abroad, not having to worry about anyone's opinion of her Sanda or racing. Now that she had come to the Jing family, she was caught up in all sorts of speculation and comments from netizens.
Jing Yi often said it was the Jing family who raised her, but it was only Grandma Jing who raised her. The money was Grandma Jing's money, which had nothing to do with the Jing family. Instead, it was Jing Yi who had always treated every member of the Jing family with a grateful heart.
It was she who suggested the family health check-up, which discovered the hidden danger in Jing's mother's body. It was also she who first sensed Jing Zejun was in danger and single-handedly went to rescue him.
What had the Jing family really given her?
Jing Zeyou felt they hadn't given her anything. If anything, they had only brought her burdens...
Jing Yi pulled down her sleeve and noticed Jing Zeyou seemed to be lost in thought. She asked curiously, "Big brother, what's wrong?"
Jing Zeyou snapped back to reality, resuming his usual demeanor. "It's nothing. I was just wondering if your hand is really alright."
Jing Yi smiled brightly, her dimples showing clearly. "Don't worry, it's fine. But big brother, whatever you do, don't tell second brother about this!"
[If Jing Zeqian finds out, he'll be hard to deal with.]
For some reason, ever since the incident with Jing Zejun at the hotel, Jing Zeqian had developed a somewhat 'motherly' attitude that even Jing Yi found difficult to handle.
She glanced cautiously upstairs, worried that Jing Zeqian might suddenly come down.
The corners of Jing Zeyou's mouth turned up. "Zeqian hasn't come back yet."
Hearing this, Jing Yi breathed a sigh of relief, patting her chest. "That's good! That's good!"
Seeing Jing Yi's alert posture as if facing a formidable enemy, Jing Zeyou was about to say a few good words on behalf of his brother, but after some thought, he swallowed his words.
Better not. Say too much and he might turn into a mother hen himself.
"Well then, big brother, I'll go upstairs to rest?"
Jing Zeyou nodded, watching Jing Yi's retreating figure. He couldn't help but call out to her.
"Yi Yi."
Jing Yi turned back, puzzled. Jing Zeyou's deep eyes held a rare touch of tenderness.
His tone was gentle. "No matter what kind of Jing Yi you are, the family will love you. When it comes to being yourself, you can be a bit more unrestrained."
