Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Self Introduction
“Everyone’s here?” Hugan-sensei confirmed that everyone has been seated, and then he started the homeroom session.
“I’m Cyrus May Hugan. Unless you guys totally cannot follow the lessons or caused trouble, I will look after you for these 3 years. I will turn a blind eye if it wasn’t something serious, but make sure not to do stupid things and increase my job. Yoroshiku.”
–Hey, are you sure that’s okay, teacher of Centrior?
Perhaps he believed in the hands-off policy because this world only valued real ability no matter what. This type of person won’t get angry as long as you do what you needed to do so it was easy to deal with. It seems like I can get along well with Hugan-sensei, thought Razé.
“Ok, we will start with the usual self-introduction. Introduce your name and your skill specialty if you know it. Other than that, you can say whatever you want to speak of. We’ll start from that row, one by one.”
The self-introduction session started from the opposite side of the room from where Razé sat. If the name didn’t include an aristocratic title, everyone would know that the person was a commoner. Razé was listening hard to look out for a fellow comrade, but unfortunately, a commoner was not so common here.
“Carna Foote Mortens. My specialty is ice magic.”
“Claude Orr Lesir. My specialty is shadow manipulation magic.”
“I’m Ian Masse Durhua. I’m good at physical strengthening [1].”
“Luca Fein Streinge. My specialty is earth magic.”
That was the daughter of the Foreign Minister, the son of the Head Steward of the Imperial Palace, the grandson of the former Knight Captain of the Shian Empire and the son of the Minister of Finance.
These people alone were already enough. On top of these high-ranking people, there were even the Prime Minister’s son and Prince Ruben, all in the same class.
Razé was at her wits’ end. When she thought of them, she felt so inferior …
Everyone announced their skill specialty like it was nothing special. But actually, identifying specialty required money and you would have to get an examination done at a proper institution. This was because if you made a mistake at identifying your skill specialty, you would not be able to exert your actual power, and some people might fall into a slump or met with a life-threatening situation.
These aristocratic children must have been blessed with good guides. It was totally different for her. During the wartime, she was forced to get the aptitude examination using a special machine.
It hurt a lot back then. While she was reminiscing her past, Folia stood up.
“Fo- Folia Cresias. My skill specialty is healing magic. I’m not good at other type of magic but I will do my best.” She bowed down her head while the classroom clattered with noise. It was because she was a commoner. On top of that, her classmates were shocked because her specialty was healing magic.
It was very rare for someone to have healing magic as their skill specialty. Basically, anyone who practice magic should be able to use any type of magic to some extent. But non-specialty healing magic had very limited effect. It was either specialty or regular. For magic, the limit you could achieved depend on this classification.
For regular healing magic, the most you could do was to close a wound. For specialty healing magic, you could even reconstruct body parts that was destroyed.
The difference of competency between the classification for healing magic was too huge, so it was considered as precious.
It turns out that Folia can use healing magic. Even Razé was surprised.
“Alright. Be quiet. Let’s move on to the next one. Next!” Hugan-sensei clapped his hand and the classroom quieted down. But there were many students who were looking at Folia curiously.
Since it was a school for the aristocrats, many people would have thought that the commoner might get bullied. But this was Centrior. There was no idiot that would look down on the ability of commoner who could enter the academy.
Rather, the aristocrats who gathered at this school would plan their future prospect by building a connection with these elite commoners.
Although there might be some students who were in their rebellious phase and did not have common sense, as long they know their place, a commoner could live comfortably here.
So, it was not odd if Folia was drawing attention. If they could get close now, then they could ask her for help later if something happened. It was a natural development. No one would do something that would get themselves on everyone bad side right from the beginning. So, it was very unlikely that the cute Folia would get bullied.
Hmm. Should I mention something special about me too?
As a fellow commoner, it would be better if she had some redeeming feature too because they might get compared together. Razé was listening to the self-introduction while thinking what to do when it was everyone’s idol, Prince Ruben’s turn had come.
“Ruben Ank Roseberry. My specialty are flame and water.”
–As expected from a prince. He even had two skill specialties. Even in the military, there were only a number of people who had two specialties. It was very rare. It was like compiling high spec on top of high spec; his spec was way too high. So, this is what they called the promising young talents, thought Razé with admiration while she totally forgot that she herself was one of them.
The turn went on, and it reached the last seat of middle left row. His Excellency the Grim Reaper’s son stood up. “Adis Lag Zars. My specialty is wind.”
—There it is. The cynical fresh smile inherited directly (?) from the Prime Minister. Huh? What happen to the girls?! Why are their eyes fluttered with anticipation? Don’t get fooled by that smile! You might think he has a kind-looking face, but there is no one as black bellied as him. Please don’t be like me. I got fooled by the Prime Minister and ended up doing dangerous mission. You’re going to … hmm, you’re not going to-
Once she calmed down and think about it rationally, there is no such danger here. Well, I don’t have to worry about it then. Razé changed her mind. She waited for her turn while reflecting on the fact that she should have made her bangs covered her face because her expression was easy to read.
“Next one is the last.” Prompted by Hugan’s eyes, Razé stood up. She had memorized her character setup perfectly. She won’t make any careless mistake here.
“My name is Razé Granoli. My skill specialty is movement magic [2]. I will do my best to keep up with everyone.”
Her specialty was ‘movement’. She could teleport to a place that was pre-marked. And she could use shukuchi [3] to teleport to a desired location within 3 kilometers radius without pre-mark. Other than that, she could also switch places with another person. There were many applications, as long as it was related to movement.
It might seem like an ordinary magic, but Razé had survived this far with this magic. Her skills were definitely top notch.
In the end, her introduction ended with nothing special.
But it was not like she could said “I have more or less already mastered all types of magics”. Otherwise, people would question what did she came to learn for? Commoner like that would only get suspected, so she decided to tell only the necessary facts.
The fact that she was a soldier and was backed up by the emperor was something that was only known to the principal of the academy. It was best for her to avoid drawing attention.
“Oh, you’re that scholarship student. Ok, ok. I got it. So now the self-introduction is finally finished.”
After Razé sat down, Hugan-sensei’s monologue was heard throughout the classroom. Her classmates who thought that she was a commoner with nothing special were originally turning their heads to face forward. But now everyone was turning their head again to look at her. Apparently, she has been targeted as someone worth to be friends with.
Good at study character setup …? Well, I did plan to study hard so that I won’t be looked down anyway.
With the label of scholarship student, Razé’s character setup has been decided in an instant. Folia who was sitting up front was giving her a look of admiration that said “sugoi[4]!!”.
A commoner who could enter the academy should naturally be a good student. Originally, she was planning on studying hard so that she won’t get outcasted. But now it seemed like she need to study harder and target for the top rank to meet the expectation.
I was hoping to avoid drawing attention, but now … Things always don’t go as planned.
Despite being at a loss by the unfamiliar mission, Razé decided to work hard so that she won’t be targeted by the aristocratic kids.
