The Last Gentleman

Chapter 54

The shadowy figure with a liquid tank embedded in its head was different from the fiery "female doctor" who had patrolled the dormitory earlier.

Let's temporarily refer to this one as the "male doctor." He looked like he lived in the gym, treating protein powder like water—a terrifying presence.

1. "Arms": Various medical device cables pierced in and out of the arms. Instead of a single arm, it looked like a composite of multiple arms connected by cables, with even small, infant-like hands fused into it. The arms were unusually long, dragging along the ground below the wrists.

2. "Torso": A physique comparable to a bodybuilding champion’s, but with a black-and-white ECG monitor embedded in the left chest. He wore a sleeveless white coat—or rather, the sleeves had been torn apart by his bulky arms.

3. "Legs": The thighs appeared normal, but the knees connected to three lower legs. The main leg even had wolf-like fur. Together, these three legs formed a tripod structure, firmly supporting his muscular body.

4. "Head": No clear head structure existed; instead, a liquid tank protruded from a rotting neck. Inside the nutrient-filled tank floated an inflamed yellow eyeball. This eye functioned perfectly, even more sharply than a normal eye, fixated on the two people at the edge of the rooftop.

Another "Abnormal Patient."

Edmund had already switched to holding a gun in his left hand and a sword in his right, his face grim.

"It seems we have no choice but to fight. If we retreat to the first floor now, this thing might trigger the clinic’s alarm, unleashing all the patients inside the building to hunt us down. Since Dagobert isn’t here, I’ll attract its attention and engage in close combat. William, use your 'plant-based' pathological traits and your excellent visual abilities to support from the side..."

Before he finished speaking, a shadow flashed past Edmund.

It was Yi Chen, who carried a crow-patterned kerosene lantern on his waist and a silver axe in hand. His black-and-white striped tie fluttered in the high-speed dive, and he wore a temporary mask made of tender plant shoots—not to filter disease, but to purify the air.

This ensured that no matter what bodily fluids splashed on his face during battle, he could still breathe the freshest, plant-scented air to refresh his mind and maintain focus.

"So fast! William was supposed to be the intellectual type, wasn’t he? Could this be a boost from his plant-based constitution? No, his sprinting form is perfect, and his muscle coordination is flawless. He’s undergone special physical training," Edmund thought, startled by Yi Chen's sudden burst of speed.

This was the result of Yi Chen’s half-year training on the "spiked treadmill," where every step brought phantom pain to the soles of his feet. But pain wasn’t a burden for him—it was a stimulant.

Meanwhile, the "male doctor" mirrored Yi Chen's crouched sprint. The speed from his wolf-haired leg wasn’t inferior, and the other two legs provided extra support, making his stance incredibly stable.

The long arms dragged along the ground, gradually scraping off flesh during the run, revealing defibrillator paddles hidden in his palms. Moonlight bathed his body, making his muscles writhe slightly, as if stimulants were flooding his system.

In physique and aura, the "male doctor" was superior. Yet Yi Chen showed no fear.

["Vision Lock-On"]

In the visual field he shared with "Little Grape," a targeting reticle had already locked onto the yellow eye in the liquid tank.

Interestingly, a new element appeared in his vision, possibly related to his profession or his understanding of the Old Living Script. When focusing on a target, twisted, worm-like characters floated across his retina.

The text was positioned perfectly above the "male doctor," outlining his identifying information:

[Heart Savior – Francisco Holt (Patient)]

In less than a second.

The circular dashed line turned solid, indicating that the "lock-on" was complete.

Buzz!

Similar to the power of the giant eye at the lake bottom, an invisible mental shock struck directly, affecting the patient's cognitive level.

In an instant.

The male doctor lost consciousness and, due to his sprint's momentum, fell heavily to the ground.

Bang!

The vial on his neck shattered,

Yellow grapes scattered with the glass shards,

The small grape creature jumped and caught the airborne grape with its black hands, then did a perfect double somersault back onto Yi Chen's shoulder.

It resumed its rooted position and stuffed the grape into its mouth.

The fresh, warm juice filled its mouth, but quickly turned bitter.

"Yuck! The grape itself is quite good, but it's severely inflamed—too bitter!"

While the little grape creature criticized the yellow grape,

Yi Chen took a step forward and swung an axe at the fallen "male doctor."

Crack!

The skin, flesh, and spine in the middle of his back were sliced open, and red marrow oozed out... For a human, such an injury would mean complete paralysis.

Creak, creak!

Through the wound, plant roots extended from the axe, growing into the "male doctor’s" body, searching for the root of the [pathogen].

After about five seconds,

The invasive roots detected an anomaly in the heart,

The tumor-like pathogen was encapsulated within a "cardiac monitor"—arcs of electricity even danced on its surface, powering the entire body.

"Found it!"

Yi Chen prepared to control the roots further, fully invading the monitor... piercing the pathogen with sharp root tips to drain it dry.

At that moment,

The "male doctor’s" body convulsed, and the wound on his back quickly healed.

He had broken free from the mental shock and regained full consciousness... The spinal injury didn’t hinder his movements, and the electric currents running through his arm cables functioned like nerves.

The massive arm swung at an impossible angle!

A palm struck Yi Chen’s chest,

It wasn’t just a physical blow; the embedded defibrillator in the palm also activated.

Crack! The clear sound of ribs breaking.

Yi Chen’s thin frame was sent flying toward the rooftop's edge, seemingly about to fall off.

White smoke rose from his chest, as if burned by an electric shock.

"William!"

Edmund instinctively ran to the edge to catch his teammate.

However,

The severely injured Yi Chen appeared relaxed, "lying in the air," smiling and enjoying the flight.

He even turned sideways, pointing deliberately at his left chest to convey an important message to Edmund.

A moment later... Bang!

A silenced gunshot echoed faintly on the rooftop.

The "male doctor," who had just gotten up to pursue Yi Chen, collapsed again.

The monitor in his chest had been pierced by a bullet... The pathogen tumor inside was hit by a silver bullet and completely corroded.
