The Max Level Hero Has Returned!

Chapter 880: The Chances of Winning a Lottery

[Grape-flavored Cat Tower]

Han Yu-Na, also known as [Maga].

The two of them were popular figures, yet there were still many who didn’t know them. They didn’t possess overwhelming power for Awakened individuals. In fact, when they played Alf Online, they never advanced beyond the level of casual players.

However—

Their lives were turned upside down when they encountered someone incomparably wicked.

"Why waste your talents when you can use them to save lives? Think of it as donating your abilities.”

"Come on, Davey, can’t I just retire in peace…?"

"Retire? Who said you could do that?"

"You’re so nasty… I thought I was finally free…" Han Yu-Na said.

"I’m not asking you to do anything absurd like before. This time, it’s simple—even by your standards."

The two exchanged uneasy glances.

"Really?"

"Can we trust you on that?"

Seeing their nervous faces, Davey nodded.

"Yeah."

But it didn’t take long for their trust to be completely shattered.

* * *

There was something unique about the crafting abilities Awakened individuals could possess.

By default, they could create most objects using blacksmithing and alchemy. They organized and redesigned the structures of materials, utilizing their synergy to bring new creations to life. But what they crafted often went far beyond the intrinsic capabilities of those materials. It was as if they were asking for God’s Blessing to create entirely new substances using their crafting rank.

A prime example of this was the Corona Destroyer, a hammer capable of shattering an opponent’s defense in just three swings. Even though they were top-ranked crafters, the Corona Destroyer’s efficiency was absurdly exceptional, almost alien.

Of course, this was only a problem when making high-performing equipment.

The problem, however, laid… in the success rate.

"Using matter transmutation with computer AI and magic stones to create a new material," Maga muttered, her face pale.

"Even if it’s a straightforward task, the success rate is one in eight million."

"Yeah."

"You know that’s the same probability as winning the lottery, right?"[1]

"I’m aware. And?”

"How can you speak about that so casually?!"

Maga grabbed Davey by the collar in frustration.

"No matter how you spin it, asking me to try something eight million times is insane!"

"Stop being dramatic. It’s not like you’re guaranteed to hit the eight-million mark before succeeding."

"Why is it always me…"

With a miserable expression, she slumped to the ground.

"That lazy grape gets to slack off while I handle all the hard parts, eh?" she grumbled.

Davey shook his head in response.

"No, he’s the one creating the materials for your crafting attempts. Don’t worry about him having it easy."

"Oh…"

"He’s not done until you’re done."

At his words, she made a dark grin.

Ah… I almost hope I don’t succeed right away."

‘What a psychotic woman.’ Davey thought to himself.

"And this time, I’m taking part as well."

Once the final product was complete, he wouldn’t need to perform difficult surgeries to restore sight to those who had lost it. Of course, it’d still demand considerable surgical expertise to succeed.

Ignoring the agonized screams echoing behind him, Davey nodded in satisfaction.

* * *

"Where are you off to?"

"Oh, I have an errand to run outside."

Dressed in a lovely outfit, Illyna looked surprisingly calm as she prepared to leave.

"An errand?"

"Yeah. It’s something Yu-Na asked me to do. It’d be rude to refuse, so I’m just stepping out for a bit."

"And it involves a guy?"

"Yeah."

She answered calmly.

"Alright. Have a good time."

"I’ll be back soon."

The conversation showed no hint of suspicion, and neither of them found it strange.

As Illyna left, Davey silently watched her go before turning his head.

"Planning to follow her?" Perserque asked.

"No. She’s not a kid; there’s no need."

She then approached Davey who was reclining in a rocking chair. She sat atop his lap with a mischievous smile.

"I’m a cat."

"Most cats are pretty sly."

With a charming grin, she playfully poked his cheek with her soft paws.

"How is it? Feeling energized yet?"

Her teasing, almost mocking smile made Davey slowly extend his hand. He gently stroked her cheek before pulling her arm and causing her to topple forward into his embrace.

Perserque, caught in an awkward position, stared at him in surprise. Just as Davey was about to say something—

Whoosh!!

The door suddenly opened, and someone walked in.

"Uh… Did I come at the wrong time?"

Hyun-Ah stood by the door looking awkward, alongside their uncle who was smiling gently.

"Hyun-Su, no, I guess you’re Davey now. Davey, it seems I chose the wrong time to visit. I’ll come back later."

With that, their uncle began to turn away. Perserque, her face flushing slightly, pushed Davey away with her paws and quickly stood up.

"Welcome! It’s nothing important, so you don’t need to worry."

Her soft smile made their uncle stop mid-turn, chuckling awkwardly.

"I see. This old man comes barging in when newlyweds are enjoying their time together. My apologies, dear niece-in-law."

"Please, speak freely. It’s not a problem at all.”

As their uncle cleared his throat awkwardly, Hyun-Ah poked her head back into the room and approached Davey.

"Wow… Davey, that mood was really something, huh?"

"What are you doing coming all the way out here without telling me beforehand?"

"Well, he said he wanted to see you, so I tagged along."

"What about Yeon-Hee?"

"Busy with work—she’s swamped taking care of some new project.”

She sighed before continuing.

"It’d be nice if she could settle down and get married already."

"Look who’s talking. Why don’t you sort out your own life first before worrying about others?"

"That attitude of yours hasn’t changed one bit."

"Oh my, we have guests!"

Aeria, who had been coming from the kitchen with a tray of fruit, perked her ears up in surprise.

* * *

They chatted away, but their uncle hadn’t visited for any particular reason. He had simply wanted to check on his nephew, who was reborn into a new life, and see if he was doing well.

"Actually, you know, Hyun-Su… or should I call you Davey now?"

"You can call me Hyun-Su. I had planned to leave that name behind, but there’s no real point of doing so now."

The reply made him put on a faint smile.

Out in the yard, Rinne was swinging a lightsaber at approaching fruit, slicing it cleanly in midair as Aeria chuckled awkwardly. Hyun-Ah, on the other hand, clapped her hands in fascination, clearly enjoying the spectacle.

"Hyun-Su."

"Uncle, you have something to say, don’t you?"

His uncle chuckled bitterly in response.

"Hyun-Su, have you ever thought about learning the ropes of the Sacred Group?"

Davey quietly looked at his uncle. The man who was the pillar of his previous life now seemed smaller—more fragile. A faint feeling of melancholy came over him.

"Hyun-Ah and Yeon-Hee are both stuck in the company, sacrificing their dreams and personal lives to help this unworthy uncle of theirs. Neither has even gotten married yet."

"Uncle…"

"I’d like you to learn things and take over the company, Hyun-Su."

Considering Davey was technically a prince and the lord of Heins Territory, the prospect of running Sacred Group—a leading global corporation on Earth—held little allure for him.

"Why are you so fixated on the company?"

"Hyun-Su. As you know, this world is overrun with Awakened individuals and monsters constantly fighting each other.”

“Yes, I’m aware.”

"Many lives have been lost in the process. Sacred Group is developing special wave detection devices to support the Awakened in their missions, and to help people around the world evacuate more safely when battles occur.”

Though the destructive side of Neltarid and the Malicious Spirits had disappeared, the twisted world they had left behind long since became part of Earth’s reality.

His uncle gazed deeply at him as he continued.

"The Sacred Group was built with the support and ideals of the almost-collapsed Church of Neltarid. But today, more than half of our shareholders see it only as a profit-driven business."

While it was natural for a company to pursue profit, his uncle seemed to find it distasteful.

"Helping those in need should be common sense. Unfortunately, that often doesn't align with reality. That’s why…”

"You need someone who can maintain balance in the middle."

"Exactly. And in doing so, that person will inevitably make a lot of enemies."

Davey knew his request was no small burden, but his conviction in what he did was evident.

"Uncle…"

"Ahem. Forget I said anything, Hyun-Su. I shouldn’t have shown you such a pathetic side of myself.”

But he soon got himself together again and continued talking.

"Watching you and your wife live so well… It would be selfish of me to involve you in something so difficult."

"Uncle."

Davey said while looking at him quietly.

"Still, my nephew… You’re quite the capable one. Princesses of a kingdom, you said?"

"It just sort of worked out that way. Tionis has been pretty chaotic lately."

"Haha, I see. Still, I’d have preferred if you had settled for just one."

"Haha, I bet."

‘Well, that was the original plan…’

But now—

"Even so, I think things are fine the way they are."

‘At least, for now.’

"Well, I should be heading back. I’ve seen that you’re doing well, and that’s enough for me."

"Uncle.”

"But do visit us occasionally—at least on your parents’ memorial days, so you can show your face and let them know their son is doing fine."

"I’ll think about it."

Just then—

Buzz!! Buzz!!

Davey’s phone loudly buzzed. The caller was none other than Frelia, one of the last two Valkyries and Neltarid’s remaining henchman.

- Human!

“God’s messengers use smartphones now?"

- This isn’t the time for jokes! Those who’ve violated taboos have appeared! They’re targeting you, human!

"Me?"

- Yes! It seems they’re using the power of the moon you created. So…

Boom!!!n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

A massive explosion echoed from nearby.

"What in the…"

His uncle mumbled in shock as Davey calmly spoke into the phone.

"I’m hanging up."

- What? Wait—!

"Uncle, please wait here for a moment."

The sudden explosion caused Aeria and Rinne to stop what they were doing, turning their heads toward the sound. The piece of fruit Rinne had tossed into the air dropped to the ground.

"Didn’t the explosion come from the direction Illyna went?” Perserque muttered under her breath.

* * *

"That’s her."

A man in dark clothing stood on the rooftop of a building, peering down. What wouldn’t be visible to ordinary humans was clear as day to him and his companions.

"Such an incredible blessing. So, we need to capture her, correct?"

"Be cautious. She’s connected to the Saint of Tionis. There’s likely more to her than meets the eye."

"It shouldn’t be a big deal. With the Demon God on our side, we can handle anything."

With a snap of his fingers, one of his subordinates gave a signal.

Boom!!

The cafe where Illyna had been talking with a man erupted in a massive explosion.

"The Saint of Tionis is an exceedingly dangerous individual. Handle this carefully, and ensure the target is retrieved."

The situation was escalating.

"Si-Woo! Si-Woo! Stay with me!"

Covered in blood, Illyna knelt over him, shouting in panic. The sudden and unprovoked attack had caught her completely off guard.

"Send the Demon God to get her. The target is too valuable to lose."

1. This is likely meaning a Korean lottery—in America, the chances of winning the lottery are more like one in 300 million :) ☜

Editorb’s Thoughts

Every time I play a medic in war games, I dramatically yell DON’T YOU GIVE UP ON ME-UGH before healing my teammates. It’s fun to add that touch of silly realism.

I shudder at the thought of Faker bleeding out before me as I slap him to try to keep him conscious.

Lol I swear the normal gif isn’t that fast 😂
