Chapter 23 Give And Take
In the end, Aion decided to see Georges' situation before he could decide if he could take his money. If it were an easy task, he wouldn't, but if it were, it would be a fair exchange.
In the end, it didn't take long for Aion to see the problem. Since he was the fourth of the boys, he had been trying to catch up with the elders. So, Georges does pretty much everything in a hurry. Including reading and writing.
"You shouldn't hurry when it comes to stuff like that," Aion said. "If you read and write too fast, you won't be able to process the knowledge, and the work will come as sloppy."
"But I don't have time for that… I would rather spend training," Georges said.
It was hard to be logical with kids when they came up with that kind of argument. Since he liked to do things fast to have more time with training, Aion decided to help him a bit with that.
"If you don't want to study much, at least study efficiently," Aion said. "Instead of reading random things, grab one of the books that the old geezer uses to teach us tactics and then copy the important parts."
"Why should I have to copy when things are already written there?" Georges asked.
"Because you will be reading, writing, and learning things at the same time," Aion replied. "You will have to write slowly since you won't be writing something from your head. Thus, you will read slowly as well. You will be doing two things slowly, but it will be doing several things faster, one after the other."
"What is thus?" Georges asked.
Being a teacher for children in a medieval world sure is tough… Still, Aion couldn't complain since he didn't remember using that word as a child. In any case, Aion wondered if he could write books to make money… in a world like that, writers should make quite a bit since there are no machines to help multiply them. Unfortunately, that was also a slow process, and Aion needed something faster to make money.
In the end, Aion had the idea to use his knowledge of Earth to make some money. He could try to reproduce some objects from there and sell them in the capital. He will have to leave at night without letting anyone notice it, or perhaps he could leave during the day, but it was hard to imagine his mother letting him go alone, but since she couldn't leave the house, that would only make her feel bad.
Aion had to give up on that idea because he would need materials that he couldn't easily find. While he was feeling troubled over that. Georges showed up, and he looked pretty proud of himself while he carried some pieces of paper.
"Look at this, Aion!" Georges said while showing the pieces of paper where his writing style had improved a lot. "Mother finally said that this is decent handwriting!"
"For a week of progress, is pretty good… but it looks like she is really harsh on you," Aion said while frowning.
Calling only decent the hard work of an eight years old boy… while it wasn't a good idea to shower kids with praise, one could only be so strict… Still, if one thing Lexus taught them were that they shouldn't feel satisfied by making progress only once, so he wouldn't stop there.
"My sister is also having problems with her studies. Can I tell her what you told me as well?" Georges asked.
"Sure, that certainly wasn't a secret that can revolutionize society," Aion said.
"Thanks, wait, I have to pay you," Georges said.
"No need, I only told you a single thing and nothing else," Aion shook his head. "One can't be paid for such a thing."
Kids sure were loose with money since they didn't know how hard it was to make it. Besides, Aion wasn't that desperate. He still would have to think of something, but he wasn't in that need of money.
"You won't accept it… then I will tell you something useful as well," Georges said. "If you to to the guild, you can put a challenge there to people to challenge you. If they win, you pay them the reward, if they fail, they will have to pay a fee. Father said that this a common method for some mercenaries and soldiers to gain a lot of combat experience. Father said that we shouldn't cause problems, but since you are good at holding back, you will be time."
"How naive can you be?" Elio asked while he suddenly joined the conversation. "No one is going to accept the request of someone so young. While he has some skill, no one aside from us knows Aion. To make that work, we will have to tell other trainees around our age about that. It is difficult for them to find partners around our age, after all."
Elio had a point, but Aion didn't think that he had thar smart ass attitude. It was probably because recently he had been using a now and apparently he has some talent with it. In any case, that didn't seem like a bad idea… if Aion gets some fame, he will be able to fight tougher enemies and thus make more money while gaining combat experience. The real question was if the fact that his mother's son would bring problems to the matter.
"I will try that, thanks for the intel," Aion said.
Philip and Henri were sparring with spears nearby and they stopped to listen. It seemed that they were interested in the topic, but Aion didn't know why…
