Jake nodded to himself in amazement while he checked his new items. While he got the ones used by the swordsmen and archers, the girls obtained some defensive gear from everyone and also the magic items from the mage and pries. Thanks to that, their mana increased a little bit, Lana even gained Hermes' Blessing and Louise obtained Fire Wave. It wasn't much of an area of effect attack spell that she wanted but it was something. Nevertheless, Jake had to make his smile disappear since Lana was looking at him with some annoyance. According to her, it wasn't time to feel like that when Louise had a hard time thanks to an old lover.
"Thank you, legendary heroes," Grommok said. "Thanks to you, we avoided being wiped out today. This isn't much, but we hope you can accept this as a token of our gratitude."
Weirdly enough, they gained the tome of Aura Healing from Grommok and not from the system. If it was just to increase the sense of role-playing, Jake couldn't see the point, it seemed a bit stupid, in fact. Regardless, Lana stepped forward and thanked them before accepting the tome. The very moment she learned the skill, they were summoned back to the crystal server town.
Congratulations! You obtained 10.000 coins and 1000 Fame
Jake thought something would change after reaching that point in fame, but nothing happened. Considering that, it seemed that the system was programmed to make players clear the Hellish Desert several times before unlocking the next area. That seemed a bit too much, but Jake realized that it just showed the difficulty level of the mission. Besides, now, he could accept the mission to clear the dungeon and see its rewards.
Defeat the Scorpion King: Rewards 10.000 coins, 1000 Fame, and a Bloodline.
"Oh… a bloodline," Jake muttered to himself in satisfaction. "I guess I can finally obtain a race here."
"Jake!" Lana raised her voice.
"Oh man… what now?" Jake asked after a long sigh. "Can't a guy stay for five minutes in a good mood?"
"We don't have time for that, we need to help Louise," Lana said.
"We don't have time for that… and I am the self-centered, huh," Jake frowned.
"It is fine, I am all better now," Louise said. "I just need sometime alone."
"No… being alone is the last thing that you need right now," Lana said. "Who knows what that creepy might be planning now?"
When Louise heard that, she felt some shivers and then crossed her arms uncomfortably. For someone who was trying to help, Lana apparently was only making things worse. Jake heard that in some countries there is a saying: there is nothing worse than a hero. Those who are too eager to help, tend to complicate things even more and Jake just confirmed that.
"Why don't you let her sleep on your place for a few days?" Jake asked. "That guy seemed pretty stupid, but not to the point to break the law. Still, I guess you are thinking that it is better to be cautious than anything."
"I live in a special complex where only students are allowed, while the place is almost empty in summer, I can't let visitors stay overnight," Lana said.
"Just rent a room in a hotel then," Jake said. "You didn't suffer any game over and completed several missions with me, you should have some money in your bank account."
"You are so stupid…" Lana said and then sighed.
"I really don't want to hear this from you," Jake furrowed his eyebrows.
"Louise, don't you have some guy friends that you can trust to help you with this?" Lana asked.
"Right now? No…" Louise said and then forced a smile.
Jake didn't like where that conversation was going… it was obvious what would happen in a few seconds and while he didn't want to be dragged out in someone else's messy life. He more or less had a score to settle with Justin.
"No, no, no… anything but him," Lana looked at Jake for a moment and then shook his head.
"Yes, I can why you both have too few trustworthy friends now," Jake said.
Lana thought for a while about their options and while Louise didn't want to admit it, she didn't really want to stay alone right now. Now that she thought about it, Justin really was someone messed up, since he didn't have any hesitation in discarding her like trash and making several rumors about her spread in the city.
"We can't leave Louise alone now, but as far as know… we don't know if Jake is also a creep," Lana rubbed her chin thoughtfully.
"Lana…" Louise said showing a complicated expression.
"Hey… do you have split personalities or something?" Jake asked. "Or are you really desperate in seeking help from someone that you don't trust?"
"I guess the only plausible solution is if we stay together… at Jake's place," Lana said.
Jake face palmed, his problems just suddenly duplicated. His apartment wasn't that big and he only had one bed. His pride wouldn't allow him to let two girls sleep on his couch… Nevertheless, Jake facepalmed again because it seemed that deep down, he wanted to help those two airheads.
