Chapter 30 - YOU'RE LIKE A BIRD
"Hello," said Ellena to the person on the other end.
"Hello, Elle, are you and Lucas okay?" A familiar female voice was heard. However, Ellena still couldn't remember who the voice belonged to.
"Yes? Sorry, who am I talking to?" asked Ellena just to be sure.
"This is mommy, Elle. You don't recognize my voice?"
Ellena breathed a sigh of relief when she found out that it was Lucas's mother who had called. 'Mommy must know this number from Lucas,' she thought.
"Yeah, Mom, we're fine here. How are Mommy and Daddy? Are you guys doing too?" Ellena smiled happily at her mother-in-law who was so kind and caring towards her.
"We're fine here too. Maybe tomorrow Mommy will stay at your house."
Veronica's words this time managed to make Ellena's heart beat violently. Of course she was very surprised. It would be disastrous for her, if her mother-in-law stayed at the house. How could she and Lucas be sleeping in different rooms when Lucas's parents were there? Ah, she wanted to refuse her mother-in-law's wishes, but she couldn't do that.
"Mommy will stay at our house?" Ellena made sure to return.
"Yes. Why? Do you mind?"
"N-no, Mommy! I'm actually very happy, if Mommy and daddy will come and stay here," Ellena answered a little doubtfully. "I'm waiting for Mommy and daddy to come. Lucas will also be happy to hear that," she added later.
"Oh yeah, where's Lucas? Mommy wants to talk to him."
"Lu-Lucas ... he's not home yet, Mommy," answered Ellena.
"Not home yet? Is he having a meeting outside today?" Veronica was a little surprised to know that her son still hadn't come home.
"I think so, Mommy. Maybe he'll be home soon," Ellena explained casually. "Didn't Mommy call Lucas before?" she asked then.
"Mommy called Lucas this morning, but only asked for your contact number," Veronica answered.
Ellena seemed to reflexively nodded her head, even though her mother-in-law couldn't see it.
"Okay, mommy just wanted to say that. Take care of yourselves," Veronica said to Ellena.
"Okay, Mommy," Ellena answered quietly.
Their conversation ended with Veronica hanging up the phone first.
"Ah, how is this? What will happen to my fate, if Mommy stays at this house? I can't sleep in a different room with Lucas, can I?" Ellena was still standing with her left arm crossed over her chest, while her right hand was seen supporting her chin. Her gaze was slightly up, a sign that she was thinking about something.
Before she could end her daydream, suddenly the sound of a car rumbling made her wake up. She rushed to the window of her room, then looked out the window. Apparently Lucas' car had just been parked in the yard.
"Finally he's home," said Ellena immediately running, out of the room.
Ellena immediately approached Lucas, who had just entered the house, carrying a black briefcase.
"It's almost night, why did you just come home?" Ellena grabbed the briefcase from Lucas' hand. Lucas suddenly raised an eyebrow, surprised.
"What happened to you?" Lucas stared suspiciously.
The unusual thing his wife did, of course, made Lucas feel surprised. All this time Ellena had always been indifferent to trivial things like that. Previously, Ellena had never had a problem with her husband's return time. However, this time she actually questioned it. Meanwhile, before that she had never cared what time Lucas came home.
"Me?" Ellena pointed at her own face while looking at Lucas seriously. "What's wrong with me? Why are you looking at me like that?" Ellena pursed her lips slightly, annoyed by Lucas's suspicious gaze.
"You're not aware, Miss, of what you're doing right now?" Lucas asked in a more sarcastic tone.
"What do you mean?" Ellena still didn't understand where Lucas was talking. 'Oh, Lucas is annoying! Why does he always annoy me? What exactly is he talking about?' he whispered in his heart.
"Didn't you never care before when I came home? So, why do you look so worried about me today, ha? Or maybe ... you really miss your handsome husband?" Lucas smiled as he winked. Apparently, he was deliberately trying to tease Ellena.
"Me? Worried about you?" Again Ellena pointed at her own face. "How could I worry about you! Aren't you a rich businessman, who can hire bodyguards everywhere? Then why should I worry about you? You're not a kid anymore, are you?" Ellena dismissed all of her husband's accusations.
No matter what topic they were discussing, it always ended up inflaming one or both of them. Could it be that they really don't have the right to live together? Who knows. What is clear is that nothing happens by chance. Everything that happens is of course God's will, including the relationship between the husband and wife.
Lucas just smirked at Ellena's attitude. It was as if he couldn't believe what Ellena had just said.
"You don't believe me?" Ellena wore an annoyed expression. "You need to know, there's something I want to tell you. So, please don't be so confident like this! I couldn't possibly worry about you. Who are you, anyway?" she growled then.
Hearing Ellena's statement, Lucas frowned even more while staring intently at the face of the woman in front of him. "Do I need to explain more about my status in this house?" Lucas took a step forward, getting closer to Ellena.
"Yes, I know. You are my husband. B-but ... I mean it's temporary and we don't live like a real husband and wife, do we?" Ellena looked nervous at Lucas' gaze. She always couldn't move, if Lucas was looking at her with that piercing gaze.
Lucas immediately laughed at Ellena's answer. However, it didn't last long.
"Okay, I understand now!" Lucas smiled, then put his hands in the pockets of the pants he was wearing.
"What do you mean?" Ellena looked confused by Lucas' statement this time. Especially the look in the man's eyes.
Instead of responding, Lucas smirked again. His gaze this time seemed to be belittling, which made Ellena even more annoyed.
"You don't think such things about me!" said Ellena who was starting to get suspicious of Lucas.
"What am I thinking, Elle?" Lucas turned around to ask as if he deliberately wanted to confuse Ellena even more.
"Why is it like this? In fact, I just wanted to say that your parents will be staying at this house tomorrow." Ellena got straight to the point. She thought there was no point in responding to Lucas' attitude and words. It's useless. She will only be furious.
"So what? Do you mind, Elle? Aren't they my parents? So the door to this house is wide open for them. They can come whenever they want." Lucas looked relaxed in response to Ellena who was actually worried about it.
"Why are you so relaxed? Wouldn't this be a new problem for us? They would be suspicious if they found out that we slept in different rooms." Ellena made her protest. However, who would have thought that Lucas would respond with laughter.
Ellena wore a flat expression. Lucas' attitude this time really made her almost lose her temper. How could Lucas be calm, when she was actually worried about things that would threaten her fate.
"Why are you laughing? Do you think it's funny, ha?" Ellena tried to contain the emotions that had welled up inside.
"You know, Elle? You're like a bird begging to be caught!"
