Chapter 144: Hired!
Close to where the tests for Magic Control happened, Linfel and his group stared at a giant residential complex. At the gate, Linfel used his Magic Energy Signature, and also took the chance to register Alvin and the others. Finally, they moved to their house, not too far from the entrance gate. "Well, this is the one."

Alvin, Milia, and Nori were still surprised. Alvin even took out his MCOM just to check how many Ventis Credits you would need to rent something like this for a month. "3000... Ventis Credits..." he barely was able to pronounce it.
Milia and Nori were skeptical. "Are you sure this is ours to use? We won't suddenly get charged for trespassing, will we?"
"It's fine. It's fine!" Linfel said as he entered the house with them. It had four rooms, kitchen, baths, everything they would need. "This is part of my payment for being a supervisor in the exam every two months."
Still, Alvin couldn't help but ask. "Wouldn't it be better if you had got the payment in Ventis Credits instead of this house? We could have simply rented something much cheaper and kept the rest of the Credits."
Linfel shrugged. "I thought about that. Unfortunately, the amount of Ventis Credits you can be paid for working as a supervisor of the exam has a limit. It's just that Truqil didn't want to lose me, so he offered this house, which is property of the Ventis Sect, on the side. He is not paying me anything extra, and the house isn't mine either. We can only use it.
We still have to pay for water and electricity, though."
"So that's how it is..." They were all happy. Since that was the case, they weren't losing anything and got a much better place to live.
"We can continue here as long as I continue working on the tests as supervisor every two months," Linfel concluded.
Suddenly, Alvin heard his MCOM and brought it out. "Oh! Shit! I completely forgot about him. It's Zandel."
"Zandel?" Linfel remembered that name from his test just a few hours ago.
Alvin and Milia quickly explained about their meeting in the exam, and the fact he wanted to talk to Linfel.
"He wanted to learn about the training I gave you?" Linfel asked back. "Well... even if he offered Ventis Credits, it doesn't matter much. There were plenty of Maguses in the previous test who offered Ventis Credits for me to take them. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen."
"Why is that?" Milia asked, curious.
"Do you need to ask?" Linfel didn't seem very willing. "Not only do I have to focus on my own training, I'm already helping the three of you. There is only so much I can do on my own. You saw it back in the test. Just to help the various magus with that simple task took me hours and more hours. Try to guess if I gave them the same treatment I'm giving you."
Alvin couldn't help but feel a little bad for Zandel. "Can't you make an exception? There is no need to bring him with us. Just give him some time when we are in the city. I very much would like to see people from our planetary area do well here."
Linfel pondered a bit and gave in in the end. "Fine, call and tell him to meet us here. I'll take a look at his progress. I already have an idea after checking him earlier in the test. I'm too nice for my own good."
Later that day, Zandel arrived at their house, feeling impressed Alvin's group could afford such a thing. "How did you even get that many Ventis Credits? You have some backing in the Sect, right? Right?!"
Alvin shook his head and explained what happened.
That only made Zandel more interested in their training methods, though. He quickly turned to Linfel in the room, bowing in a polite manner. "Friend Linfel, help me out. I don't have as many Ventis Credits as the guys back in the exam, but I will pay whatever I can. I just need to get the necessary Magic Energy Control as soon as possible so I can use the Away Tokens."
"You need to leave the planet?" Milia asked out of curiosity.
Zandel scratched the back of his head. "Not exactly. You see, the missions and contracts you get inside the sect aren't really considered of great importance. If you want to become a focus of the Ventis Sect resources, you need to appear more. The Away Tokens allow you to take missions in the name of the sect on other planets, and that's where the real rewards come from.
I could even manage to buy Blue Magic Stones with it."
"Blue Magic Stones!" Alvin's group took a deep breath. It was the same Magic Energy color as Level Five Maguses and Familiars.
Linfel looked at Alvin. "Well, you passed the exam, so we can use the Away Tokens we got so far to take such missions."
Alvin remembered something. "Right! You became a supervisor, but did you even take the exam? You still haven't explained to us how you became a supervisor at all."
"Oh! I almost forgot to tell you the story," Linfel nodded. It wasn't any secret, so he didn't mind speaking about it with Zandel There. He told how Alexandra contacted him and how the higher-ups considered that Linfel had no need for the test. Finally, due to Linfel's wishes to become an elder, he ended up hearing about the Support Elder position that didn't need you to become a Level Eight Familiar.
He would need to help the sect with several tasks, and the Supervisor Exam for Magic Control was one of the ways to show his utility.
Alvin and the rest didn't know about that. "It must be pretty rare for someone to get exempt from the exam..."
"If it is or not, that I don't know," Linfel commented. "But it was pretty convenient."
Alvin then returned to the previous topic. "What about the missions outside the planet? Should we take it?"
Linfel looked at Milia and Nori, who still didn't have the necessary Magic Energy Control. "Since I'm helping the three of you, it would be better if you all could use Magic Energy for leveling. Milia can't do that at the moment, so I'm also prohibiting you from doing it, Alvin."
"Why?" Alvin asked back.
"It will be better if you, Milia, and Nori are on an equal footing when I'm focusing my Magic Sense on your bodies so I can make a proper comparison," Linfel explained. "Don't worry. Milia and Nori didn't pass the exam this time, but I'm certain they will pass the next one in two months. They just didn't have enough time to train under the same conditions I put you several months go."
Linfel then turned to Zandel. "And that brings me to you. Truth be told, I don't have much use for Ventis Credits at the moment since we aren't buying any Magic Stones. What can you offer to have me help you as well?"
"This..." Zandel immediately went silent. He only had Ventis Credits, and only a few of them. "I... am quite good at cooking?"
"You are hired!" Linfel answered instantly.
