Chapter 148: A Better Challenge
Linfel's group caused a little bit of commotion, but with the number of Maguses and Familiars coming and going in this Dungeon, they were quickly forgotten by the time the next day arrived.
Linfel made sure to heal all their injuries, while Alvin, Milia, and Zandel had to once again change their clothes. They had a great dinner, and the night went by without issues since Linfel watched over them.
Finally, they stepped in front of the Dungeon entrance, ready to get inside.
"So... Zandel, you had been here before. Where do we go from here?" Avin asked.
Zandel moved forward. "Right, it will be better if you follow me. The Dungeon has thousands of different routes leading to the lower floors. Usually, I join other groups and we follow the most used routes to guarantee our safety. After all, we are already making a good amount of Ventis Credits from the contracts. We can do the same during the next few days on our way down."
Linfel nodded. "Good. We will take the absolutely most unused route."
Alvin's group immediately sighed. They expected something like this was going to happen.
Zandel was still not used to it, though. "Did you hear what I just said...?"
"Of course!" Linfel was already floating into the Dungeon. "The safe routes have so many Maguses and Familiars that there will be barely any Magic Beasts for us. Naturally, we have to take the routes that will benefit us the most. So... we are taking the routes no one uses. Our objective for the first day is to take down at least thirty Magic Beasts.
Let's go."
"Just one second," Alvin quickly stopped him and looked at Zandel. "What kind of Dungeon is this one? It would be better to hear that first."
Zandel thought they had checked in the MCOM already. Nonetheless, he still explained. "Okay, it is like this..."
This Dungeon was a cave-type one, mainly filled with Earth Element Magic Beasts and with low to no illumination. There were various Magic Beast of flesh and blood, but so were those of rock and metal, like golems and spirits.
Above all, new traps took form every day, which was the reason for most new Maguses and Familiars to use the main routes. Not only would the traps be easily found due to the higher number of experts passing by, even if you were caught by one, you could still ask for help... although anyone willing to help during such moments would ask for payment in exchange.
"That's basically it," Zandel completed. "Oh, and there are also a few safe points for people to rest. After all, going down the floors takes various days."
Linfel and the others got the picture. "Alright, seems simple enough."
And so, their group went down the Dungeon. At first, the various other Maguses and Familiars could be seen everywhere. But as they strand further from the main routes, the numbers started to go down rapidly. Zandel also reduced his pace so that they would end up calling more than one Magic Beast at once.
*Pluc, pluc, pluc...*
Suddenly, the rocks on the walls began to move, catching their attention.
*Zush, zush, zush, zush...*
The rocks then shot into each other, quickly creating a mass of rocks and took a big humanoid form. A core soon materialized inside that thing, creating a true golem.
Alvin and the others raised their guards, ready to fight, when Linfel sighed in disappointment.
"This is kinda ridiculous..." Linfel couldn't help but comment.
*Kabrum!*
A bolt of lightning immediately took form, striking the core of the golem and piercing it through. The mass of rocks immediately stopped taking form, and the golem wasn't able to take a single step. "That wasn't even a Magic Beast, just a shit Magic Puppet or something like that. What was the use for it?"
Zandel's mouth twitched. He had met a few Golems in the past, and they had a power similar to Level Four Maguses. Yet, Linfel destroyed it with one attack. "Aren't you a little too overpowered for a Level Three Familiar?"
Linfel glanced at him. However, he didn't answer Zandel. Instead, he looked at Milia, Nori, and Alvin. "Do you know why I'm disappointed?"
Alvin nodded. He understood it the moment Linfel struck the Golem down. "Yes, it was indeed somewhat ridiculous."
Milia followed. "The core. While the golem took form, the core was pretty much exposed. Linfel attacked it before the armor of rocks could even finish gathering. Unless we purposely waited for it to take form to then fight, defeating that thing can't even be considered a challenge."
"Ah!" Zandel and Kefin finally understood. "Why haven't we thought about that before?" All the times they came down here, they took distance from the Golem when it started taking form. It seemed so simple, so why hasn't he ever noticed that?
"Hum...?" Linfel went to the area where the Golem died and noticed that the core of the Golem dissipated. "That's weird, where are the Golem Magic Strings?"
Only on m v|le|mp|yr
For the golem to control its body, the Magus Strings were necessary. It spread through the rocks and allowed the core to control the Golem. It was also the Magic Strings that could be sold to contractors. Yet, the Magic Strings, which should have been there, were nowhere to be seen.
Zandel raised his hand. "You killed the Golem before it could even take form. So... I think the magic Strings didn't have time to take form either."
"Oh..." Linfel nodded. "So killing the Golem before they take form is nothing but a waste of Magic Energy, uh? And here I thought they were useless. Seems like there was some thought behind their creation."
Linfel moved to the back, not intending to do anything anymore. "Good, let's keep moving forward. Next time we see one, Zandel will wait for the Golem to form and fight it. Kefin and the others must just watch."
"What?!" Zandel was taken aback. He wasn't afraid of fighting a single Golem since it was similar in power to a Level Four Magus like him. However, that was while Zandel was connected to his Familiar. Fighting alone would be too dangerous. "That's not a good idea."
Linfel pondered a bit and had to admit Zandel was right. "Indeed, that's not a good idea."
Finally, Zandel sighed in relief... for a second.
"We came here to train our Magic Control since we can't level up. Zandel will fight alone and can't use more than thirty Magic Channels at once," Linfel completed. "There. This should pose a slightly better challenge."
