Chapter 89: The Only Question is When
Alvin was then made aware of Connor's situation and the reason behind his change. In the end, Connor and Alvin exchanged numbers with their new MCOMs and talked alone, leaving Linfel and the others behind. That was something for the two of them to discuss.
"Thank you for bringing him together with you," Lucau bowed to Pamil and the others on the other side of the video call. He had known Connor since he was a kid, too.
-It's fine,- Pamil didn't mind. -Alright, the fact is that we all managed to get out before things turned worse in Heffal. We will take our leave now since we are still working on our situation here due to the lack of money. We will need to wait for a while since trying to join Saloton before Heffal truly falls would be considered desertion. Let us know if anything happens, okay?-
"Yes," Millia and Nori nodded before the call was finished.
After that, Linfel and the others waited for Alvin to finish his talk with Connor, which took over an hour. Only then did Alvin return to their group. "Sigh... Tratil died in the war, that's why he is like that. Fortunately, Pamil and the others are there with him."
Everyone in the Floating Blades Faction had independent Familiars, which proved how much they cared about them. Listening that Tratil was destroyed to save Connor left them definitely didn't sit well with their group.
"Alright, Connor is a bright kid; he will recover," Lucau took the lead there as the adult in charge. "What we need to focus now is on what we are supposed to do. Are you guys truly going to try to join Clondure Country as Maguses and Familiars?"
Alvin and Milia did have that plan. Nori and Felia also found it to be the best option. However, Linfel was different. "You guys go ahead and do it. I have other plans."
"Other... plans?" Alvin asked him back. "Are you not waiting to see if the war will be over?"
"I'm not," Linfel shook his head. "With these events just now, I reached the conclusion that staying in one place doesn't really suit me. Back when I lived with Horan, we were in constant movement while he threw me into the craziest situations to train. I guess I grew used to it now. I will still try to register as a Familiar from Clondure, but I will travel around while increasing my level. Then...
Well, I guess I will leave the planet and learn more about today's Universe."
"Horan? Training?" Milia and Nori were completely confused. "What is he talking about?"
"This..." Alvin and Felia didn't know what to say. Did the wisp forget Milia and Nori were still there?
However, Linfel was well aware of that fact. "It is fine. I believe Milia proved to be someone we can trust, don't you think?"
"O-Of course!" Alvin quickly agreed, although Felia had her doubts due to Nori.
Milia and Nori only got more confused, though. "Care to explain?"
"Let's return to our hotel first," Lucau suggested.
Finally, they were alone in their room, so Linfel started. "First, let me finish my whole story. Then you can ask me anything you want, okay?"
Neither Milia nor Nori had any troubles with that arrangement. If anything, they had always felt that Linfel was not simple. His abilities far surpassed what Familiars should be capable of doing.
Linfel didn't waste time and recounted the events that led him to this place today, including the fact he wasn't really a Familiar. "Even now, I still don't know why I woke in the middle of the ocean. But, from what I've learned, one thing is certain. Today's Universe is definitely many, many years in the future.
I'm from a time when Magic Energy didn't even exist, and from the looks of it, no information remains of what my Wisp Race once was. I couldn't find anything about Primordial Energy either."
"Wisp race..." Milia and Nori had shocked expressions from the start to the end of Linfel's story. "Then... what about the Double Master Familiar Connection?"
Alvin patted Milia's shoulder while looking at Nori. "Can you two connect for a moment?"
Milia and Nori looked at each other and nodded. Immediately, Nori changed into his Flame Sword form and was held by Milia. Following that, Linfel landed on Milia's shoulder. "Give me a few seconds. Do not block me."
Finally, Linfel managed to match Milia and Nori's Soul Waves, connecting his own with theirs. Their Magic Energy merged with each other, and now Milia was the one using Double Master Familiar Connection. "Unbelievable..."
Milia could feel all that energy, far surpassing anything she had ever done before. "Why does it feel like my connection with Linfel is even more precise than with Nori?" Milia couldn't help but ask.
"Because I can match your soul perfectly," Linfel explained. "Wisps are beings of soul and energy, literally. We were extremely weak in the past, but in this future Universe, the story seems to be different. Magic Energy truly fits me, and matching your souls is not an issue at all. It is quite easy.
Just so that you know, if you and I did the Master Familiar Connection test, our soul compatibility would be around 99%."
"Ah!" Nori then remembered something. "Right, back at the Academy Entrance Exam for Familiars. You did reach 99% in your first test, didn't you?"
"I did," Linfel laughed and disconnected from Milia. "I had to work pretty hard to get it down to 70%, and Alvin complained a lot."
Alvin sighed. "What did you want me to do? A Master Familiar Compatibility of 99%! You have no idea how ridiculous that number is."
Milia and Nori couldn't agree more. "This is just ridiculous!"
"You can match my Soul Waves so perfectly..." Milia continued. "Then... that trick with Magic Energy Signatures you talked about during the war..."
"Aren't you a smart girl?" Linfel commented. "That's correct. It is no trick. I can simply read someone's soul waves and magic energy and copy it. I can basically pretend to be anyone at any time as long as I have a chance to memorize their soul waves and magic energy patterns."
"Such a cheat power!" Nori was truly impressed.
"Well, that is one of the reasons I told you the truth," Linfel faintly smiled. "I can pretend to be a completely new Familiar when Alvin decides to register as a Clondure Magus. I can help you guys in the future, too. It's just that I can't teach anyone how to do this. You would need to be a wisp, just like me. Anyway, that is the end of the story."
Milia and Nori fell into deep thoughts while Lucau took the chance to ask. "Linfel. According to your predictions, how long will it take for Heffal to lose? And... can they avert this crisis?"
Linfel pondered a bit. "To be honest, I don't know. I mentioned before that no other country would meddle in this war since it seems like a lost cause. However, I lack too much information. I don't know if Heffal, Binnan, Tinfal, and Goruto don't have some hidden cards in their pockets.
In any case, Binnan, Tinfal, and Goruto will immediately give up helping Heffal and lock themselves to try to defend against that alliance of nine countries."
"If Heffal doesn't have some other plan..." Linfel sighed. "I would give them five days at most before they announced their surrender. As for Binnan and the others, they are not at the center of the chaos, so they have a better chance to survive. We will see.
I still think this alliance of nine countries considered all possible outcomes, so the truth is that Binnan and the others will also fall at some point; the only question is when."
