Chapter 14 The Master
Jake was silently tapping his foot on the ground. The day was over, and it was already nightfall.
He looked at the door, hoping that someone would come through it. It had been three hours since that mysterious guard had made contact with him.
In that time, Jake scoured through his quarters, and could not find anything. Whoever the master was, he was thorough and did not leave a trace.
Maybe, if the queen was presumed dead, he would surface. But that was not confirmed. Jake had to have her alive. That was what was best for him.
Knock. Knock.
Jake smiled. He stood up, and his Sword of Sin just disappeared into his inventory. He did not want to be walking around with it. It could be taken from him temporarily by this mysterious master.
He wanted this person to feel like nothing was wrong at all. He wanted to blend in, so that when the time came, no one would know what hit them.
The mission was not to find out who the enemies of the Queen were, but rather to eliminate them. He wanted to find out who was behind the attack, and just eliminate them while they weren't expecting it.
The door opened, and Jake looked deep into the blank eyes of someone that he didn't recognize. But seeing that the opposite did, Jake just nodded at him.
"You know the rules. Close your eyes and hand over all your weapons." a blank voice said.
Jake rejoiced for a moment there. He was so glad that he did not make the mistake of letting his sword stay on his person. He just took out a knife that he already had and gave it to this person.
The man grabbed Jake's hand and started walking forward. Jake still had a certain sense of his surroundings, until he knew that he was out of the palace.
He could hear the castle gates rising up and down. To think that whoever the master was, had people under him manning the castle gates.
If he wanted the castle to fall, then it would be easy! He had so many guards inside, and he probably had more power outside. With the castle gates rendered useless, he could easily conquer the castle with ease.
But Jake thought back to what the guard had said when he was tortured. They called the queen a false one. Whoever did this probably had a horrible sense of patriotism.
Jake had no intention of fostering it though. He had to nip it in the bud. This was an investment that he was willing to make. An investment to make this kingdom his own in the future.
"We are here now. Put your hands up." the man said.
Jake complied, and the blindfold came off. Jake quickly scoured his surroundings, but his luck had run out in this regard.
He was in a dark room, with nothing to see. There was just a candle and table in front of him. But from where he stood, the room that he was standing in was a big room.
"This is the second time that you have come here, ain't it? No wonder you feel so taken aback by this." the man who took him here chuckled and stepped back.
"So you are Night Star. A true loyal to the cause, everyone tells me." a voice came from behind that candle. Whatever the candle was supposed to do, it didn't do well.
Jake could not see who was behind the candle at all. In fact, he could not see who was around him at all.
But his feature as a player could work now. He could see numbers around him. Numbers denoting the position of players.
He was surrounded by a dozen guards, all of whom were technically the same level as he was. And many of them probably had an arrow pointed toward him.
Jake thought about it for a moment and decided to go about it another route.
"Master. It is an honor to talk with you. But this matter is urgent and important. I hope that you trust those in this room very much because this is a matter that cannot go out very easily." Jake said.
"Everyone here is like you. Loyal to the cause." the master said.
"To crown the true heir!" all of a sudden, Jake heard the dozen people shout.
The master did not say anything to this, so Jake just assumed that it was normal.
"The attack on the queen did not work! The bandits, they were led astray, and the commander was suddenly taken down by one of the bandits! I think that our calculations went wrong somewhere." Jake said.
He guessed that the bandits were there because this group had given them the location of the entourage.
"The bandits? What bandits?" the master asked.
"Damn it. It looks like I guessed wrong." Jake cursed. But he was still not in hot water yet. This was still a manageable situation.
"You weren't told of this, master? I thought that you knew, considering that the commander was so relaxed when the bandits were whizzing past him. It was like he knew that the bandits were coming, and he let them pass him." Jake said.
"There is no way that Gentle Flower betrayed the cause. There is no way! This man here must have betrayed us, and is lying to us about it!" someone shouted from the dark.
"Did I give permission for you to talk?" the master's voice became cold.
"Forgive me, master! Forgive me!" the person begged.
"It is impossible for me to kill the commander. He is stronger than me, and I was focused on trying to kill the queen. But when our entire squad was killed, I knew that I would not be able to pass the layers of guards.
I took that time to gain the Queen's trust." Jake said.
"I should have an opportunity to kill her in a few days, but I suspect that there are traitors among us. I wish to tell you personally, what the plan is that I wish to take."
