Chapter 17
C17 – There Was Indeed Something Strange Going on
“Yes, Patriarch. Mo Changyou, merely a Grade Nine Talent martial artist, couldn’t possibly have entered the ninth floor of the Azure Dragon Pagoda on his own merit. He definitely cheated!” the elders stated, clearly siding with Mo Yanglin.
“How could he have reached the ninth floor without cheating? Besides, his cultivation is only at Energy Condensation Level 3. If he could reach the ninth floor, then how is it that Mo Yunyun, who is at Energy Condensation Level 5, only made it to the seventh floor?” other elders chimed in.
A faint sneer crossed Mo Yanglin’s face.
The elders’ questioning had many disciples beginning to doubt Mo Changyou’s integrity.
“A Grade Nine Talent nobody, no matter how strong, couldn’t possibly step onto the ninth floor,” one disciple said with a sneer.
“I’m convinced he must have cheated. He’s a nobody. I’d suspect him of cheating even if he’d only made it to the third floor,” another disciple added.
“If Mo Changyou were truly so formidable as to reach the ninth level, how could he just be a Grade Nine Talent martial artist?” Mo Fei questioned, pointing at Mo Changyou.
All this did not escape Mo Yunyun’s notice. She clenched her fists, clearly upset.
Mo Changyou had reached the ninth floor through his own strength!
Mo Lianshen glanced at the Third Elder below, his irritation evident. It seemed the Third Elder was intent on causing him embarrassment.
“It’s not that I don’t believe it, but how could a mere Grade Nine Talent martial artist reach the ninth floor? I would like to see him try again. If he can reach the ninth floor within fifteen minutes, then I’ll believe it,” the Third Elder said, brushing dust from his clothing with a faint sneer.
Fifteen minutes was insufficient for Mo Changyou to replenish his Spirit Energy.
It was obvious to anyone that Mo Changyou, having just completed the tower challenge, hadn’t even recovered half of his Spirit Energy. Passing all nine floors in one attempt was fortunate enough.
Mo Lianshen, normally even-tempered, was now seething with anger. He was about to speak up when Mo Changyou addressed the room.
“Try again? Third Elder, you wield great authority. The Patriarch hasn’t even spoken, and yet you’ve made a decision. Who really calls the shots in the Mo family? Is it the Third Elder?” Mo Changyou spoke with an air of calm confidence.
This statement left Mo Yanglin completely dumbfounded.
“You!” Mo Yanglin was so incensed that he was momentarily lost for words. His influence within the Mo family had grown over the years, yet Mo Lianshen remained the Patriarch.
With just a simple sentence, Mo Changyou had utterly deflated his aura of authority.
He was indeed a formidable cultivator with a high status, but at the end of the day, he was only the Third Elder. Should he dare to defy the Patriarch, punishment would be inevitable.
The other elders fell into a contemplative silence, their gazes fixed on Mo Changyou, recognizing the piercing truth in his words.
Mo Lianshen, too, cast a glance at Mo Changyou, feeling a surge of surprise within.
“He’s been playing the fool all this time.”
“I didn’t mean that at all. We simply have our doubts and are seeking the Patriarch’s judgment. If word gets out that Mo Changyou reached the ninth floor of the Azure Dragon Pagoda, some might claim that our Pagoda is nothing more than a showpiece.” Mo Yanglin bowed to Mo Lianshen, clearly compelled by Mo Changyou’s remark to show deference to the Patriarch in public, thereby indirectly granting Mo Lianshen the power to dictate the conversation.
“Indeed, there is something peculiar about this situation. However, the lighting of the ninth floor of the Azure Dragon Pagoda was witnessed by many elders and disciples. If we were to deny the authenticity of this event, are we not implying that every member of the Mo family is blind?” Mo Lianshen posed the question. “Mo Changyou, do you think this matter requires further proof?”
Mo Lianshen truly lived up to his role as Patriarch. Despite his usual detachment from family affairs, with just a few words, he shifted the control of the situation from Mo Yanglin to Mo Changyou.
Mo Changyou gave a slight nod, clearly pleased with the resolution.
Now, all eyes, including Mo Yanglin’s, were on Mo Changyou.
“Since there are those who doubt me, I ask for another opportunity to challenge the Azure Dragon Pagoda. As the Third Elder suggested, if I fail to reach the ninth floor within fifteen minutes, I will willingly accept the consequences. However, if I do succeed, then I expect the Third Elder to bow and apologize to me. How does that sound?” Mo Changyou confidently accepted the challenge.
Mo Yanglin couldn’t help but laugh at Mo Changyou’s words.
“You think you can reach the ninth floor in 15 minutes? That’s laughable!” Mo Yanglin silently scoffed at Mo Changyou. His sneer betrayed his inner thoughts: Mo Changyou was nothing but a fool.
Earlier, Mo Changyou’s statement had caught him off guard, and he had initially thought Mo Changyou was clever. Now, he realized he was sorely mistaken.
Mo Changyou’s declaration caused Mo Lianshen to slightly furrow his brow.
Choosing to tackle the pagoda again with insufficient Spirit Energy was an act of sheer folly on Mo Changyou’s part.
“Is Mo Changyou an idiot? He actually wants to try the pagoda again? Has he lost his mind?” a disciple whispered.
“I see him as a simpleton. He’s got the nerve to attempt it again. Question is, can he even make it to the third floor in fifteen minutes?” another disciple jeered.
“Fine, I accept your challenge,” the Third Elder responded, his voice tinged with a mocking sneer.
Mo Changyou stepped into the Azure Dragon Pagoda once more, leaving the elders to shake their heads at his retreating figure.
“The boy is too impetuous. Why must he do this?”
“Indeed, fifteen minutes is far too brief. I doubt even half an hour would suffice.”
“I’d wager even two hours wouldn’t be enough. What’s that? He’s reached the ninth floor!” The elder, who was poised to mock Mo Changyou, was stunned to find that he had already ascended to the ninth floor of the Azure Dragon Pagoda!
The ninth floor lit up in an instant, barely a hundred breaths since Mo Changyou had begun his ascent. The Third Elder’s mocking grin froze on his face, his intended ridicule never voiced.
The disciples were utterly astounded.
“He’s reached the ninth floor in just a hundred breaths! How can this be?” Mo Fei’s eyes were wide with shock and disbelief.
