Chapter 295 - A Lurking Stalker
"Is the current him useless after all? Could there have been something wrong with my assessment?" Klautz sighed.
'It's annoying isn't it? What the hell was he even doing? Does he not want to win?' Klautz gritted his teeth.
For Klautz it wasn't just a matter of playing favourites. He simply didn't deserve to be lead around by the weaker ones. Not to mention that he would have quite a friction dealing with them.
'At least that guy seemed to be reasonable. How would I team up with these imbeciles now?'
The second gen themselves had a very reputation for being arrogant and naive. They were the frogs in the well whose brains seemed to be in their feet. Klautz couldn't help but envision another battle breaking out in the future. And unlike the showdown he couldn't fight them freely under the tight security by the mercenaries.
'I shouldn't have relied on him. I should have done something about it myself,' Klautz clenched his fists as he regretted overestimating Benton.
Ever since his entry to this very day, Benton sure seemed like someone who was smart and active in the 'how' and 'who' of things. But today Klautz's belief were proved wrong.
In the end, Klautz chose to put the blame on Benton. Little did he know that those sharp black eyes of the same were always on him. Benton wasn't any less competent that KLautz had figured. It was just that he had chosen to play the cards differently.
'So, Miss Yukiho bagged him in the end, I see.' Benton thought, 'Figures… considering her position.'
Benton had dubbed Klautz dangerous and interesting in many ways. That is why he had chosen to keep him away from himself while secretly observing Klautz's every move from afar as much as possible..
'I will just watch him from afar.' Benton thought as his gaze turned towards Klautz walking towards Yukiho's banner.
What happened to Colt could have happened to anybody. Benton was no exception. As such it was best for him to not get carelessly involved with Klautz. Klautz's stats and power levels were a huge secret that he had no idea of. Certainly he didn't want any sort of friction with the man. Colt's loss had left him on his guard.
"I cannot rely on Gozoto's data. It seems to be fabricated. Had it not, Colt would have never lost no matter what the rumors claim."
It was for that very reason that he made no effort in getting him under his banner despite the benefits that came along with it.
'What is the most alarming about him is not his strength but his status as a newbie. That very status could be lethal to us. I can only hope that Ms. Yukiho doesn't face any sort of trouble with him.'
Benton's eyes squinted into a sash.
The title of 'newbie' that Benton had always marked with scorn and shame had today grown into something that he would be the most wary off. It was like karma was peeking back at him threatening to emerge.
Being the offspring of a powerhouses their reputation was all they had in their store. They might ridicule the newbies, but their strength was measly even compared to the mercenaries that were hired here, not to mention Gozoto.
If someone could threaten this very birth given reputation then how dangerous could he be? It was like Klautz had a card that Benton had always looked down upon. A weapon that could aid him to win the war without even shedding a single drop of blood.
'The best victory is the one where you don't have to fight for it.'
Benton nodded.
"Butler, what news do you bring regarding Colt?"
Benton shifted his attention to a strange matter at hand. Just like Klautz he found it strange. But there didn't seem to be any sort of strange movements among the mercenaries.
"It appears that he had yet not recovered."
Benton raised his brows.
"Not recovered yet? Are you sure?"
The man dressed in black nodded.
"Strange…," Benton's pupils seemed to be lost in thought.
"Tell me this. The best potions are always secured for us in the newbie camp, are they not?"
"Yes…"
"Colt was pierced in his dominant hand, correct?"
"Yes, its as you say."
Benton's expression turned to pinch one. The air around him turned grim.
It was true that Klautz hadn't hurt Colt too much to avoid any sort of trouble in the future. He had knocked him unconscious instead.
"It isn't like he couldn't be healed by now. Not to mention that the attack was never lethal. If it would have been his vitals being pierced instead of his hand, then it would have been a different scenario but his hand…."
Benton held onto his chin. So he could just come to one possible conclusion. For nothing else made sense.
"Has he really become a chicken after losing once?"
It certainly wasn't out of possibility. It wasn't just a matter of losing once or twice. It was about what he had lost. And Klautz had certainly struck an irrecoverable loss to the same. It won't be a surprise if one were to hide his face around in public after such shame is brought to them.
"But it feels too surreal for someone like Colt…"
Colt was one of the few hell born among them who was known to be hardworking. Could he have given up after defeat shot at him for just once? Was that even logical?
'If that would have been the case, he would have died by now in a world such as ours.'
Benton knitted his brows.
'He certainly isn't scheming something is he? What is he even planning to do lying in bed all day long?'
The goal of everyone here was to hit the level cap. But it didn't seem like Colt was motivated.
