Chapter 35
C35 – Yao Beier
Jiang Chen masked his feelings well, offering only a smile without further comment.
“Wang Xiao, I really appreciate your help with yesterday’s issue. How about I treat you to a meal today as a thank you?” Yu Meini suggested, batting her lovely eyes at Wang Xiao.
She couldn’t believe he had the nerve to turn her down yesterday. Now, after she’d done him such a big favor, she was certain he couldn’t refuse.
Yu Meini’s proposal sent a ripple of shock through the onlookers.
“Unbelievable, Goddess Yu is actually asking this guy out? What kind of incredible luck does he have?”
“I’d be so jealous. To dine with Goddess Yu, I’d gladly shave ten years off my life.”
“Make that twenty for me!”
A wave of envy washed over the second-year seniors as they gazed at Wang Xiao.
Jiang Chen’s brow furrowed at the scene. He’d have to pull out all the stops to get a lunch date with Yu Meini. What on earth had Wang Xiao done to earn such gratitude and a proactive invitation from her?
Could Yu Meini actually have a thing for this freshman?
The thought soured Jiang Chen’s look towards Wang Xiao.
As the crowd anticipated Wang Xiao’s eager acceptance, he surprised them all.
“No need, you all go ahead. I’ve lost my appetite,” Wang Xiao declined calmly, shaking his head.
His response sent a wave of disbelief crashing through the cafeteria.
“He turned down Goddess Yu’s lunch invite?”
“Is he even a man? We’re talking about Goddess Yu here!”
The male students were baffled, their stares at Wang Xiao filled with incredulity.
Even Soong Ming and the other roommates were at a loss as to why Wang Xiao would pass up an invitation from the belle of the Traditional Chinese Medicine System in their sophomore year.
Amidst the buzz of conversation, Wang Xiao remained stoic. Without a word, he turned to leave with Soong Ming and the rest.
”Wang Xiao, you stop right there!” Yu Meini demanded, blocking his path with a face twisted in fury, her eyes bore into him, her rage simmering.
She was none other than the esteemed beauty of Forest City University’s sophomore Traditional Chinese Medicine department!
She had boldly invited him to a meal in front of a whole crowd!
And this jerk had the nerve to turn her down!
Yu Meini, with her innocent looks, harbored a strong and confident spirit. With her stunning beauty, no guy had ever dared to reject her!
“No way, you’re eating with me today!”
Yu Meini’s beautiful eyes bore into Wang Xiao as she spoke with earnestness, her voice tinged with a playful arrogance.
Yet to the onlookers, her feisty demeanor came across like a fierce little girlfriend insisting her boyfriend join her for a meal.
The males in the cafeteria collectively inhaled sharply, their gazes filled with envy towards Wang Xiao.
When a goddess like her pleads, how can you not just say yes?
“Look, I know I’m quite the catch, but your forwardness is throwing me off a bit,” Wang Xiao quipped, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he caught Yu Meini’s eager look.
He continued, “Since you’re being so forward, it seems only right for me to respond in kind. How about we skip the formalities…”
“What do you mean by ‘skip the formalities’?”
Yu Meini blurted out, caught off guard by Wang Xiao’s suggestion.
Immediately, she regretted her words.
With that sly look in Wang Xiao’s eyes, he was surely up to no good!
True to form, Wang Xiao’s lips curled into a slight grin as he casually suggested, “Let’s go book a room!”
The crowd erupted into whispers at his audacious proposal.
“This guy’s got guts, openly making such a bold move on Goddess Yu.”
“Maybe Goddess Yu is into guys who are direct and uncomplicated?”
“Whether Goddess Yu is into him, I don’t know, but I’m pretty sure Yang Master Jiang is seething with jealousy.”
The sophomores murmured among themselves, discussing the scene in hushed tones.
“Wang Xiao, what kind of nonsense are you spouting? Who said anything about getting a room? I just wanted to have a simple meal with you. What’s going on in that head of yours?” Yu Meini snapped, her face clouding over as she bit back her frustration at Wang Xiao.
This jerk is at it again, playing the thug!
What a lowlife!
Absolutely shameless!
“Yeah, I just wanted to rent a room with you, that’s all. Relax, I swear I won’t do anything wrong,” Wang Xiao said earnestly to Yu Meini, his chuckle sleazy enough to make anyone cringe.
The other guys nearby couldn’t help but smirk at his words. They were all men; they knew exactly how much Wang Xiao was exaggerating.
“You!”
Yu Meini’s face flushed with anger as she heard Wang Xiao’s brazen remarks. She clenched her fists and shouted, “Get out of here! I never want to see you again, you Stinky Rascal!”
“Well, it seems I won’t be getting that room after all. Time for me to go,” Wang Xiao said with a shrug, feigning resignation.
With that, he walked off, laughing and joking with Soong Ming and the rest.
“That despicable guy!”
Yu Meini watched Wang Xiao’s retreating figure, stomping her foot in frustration and muttering through clenched teeth.
“Meini, don’t be mad. How about we grab something to eat first?” Jiang Chen suggested, trying to soothe her as he noticed her displeasure.
”Eat? I’ve lost my appetite. If you’re hungry, go ahead and stuff yourself,” Yu Meini retorted with a huff, giving Jiang Chen a scornful look before storming off with a swish of her hips.
”Uh…” Jiang Chen’s smile froze as he watched her leave, his hands balling into fists, his expression darkening.
“Pah, what a joke. She’s just a pretty face. One of these days, she’ll be begging for mercy in my bed!” he muttered under his breath.
The Earring Boy and the others exchanged uneasy glances, sensing their boss’s mood and keeping silent.
“Master Jiang, should I look into those freshmen’s backgrounds? They made you lose face; we can’t just let this slide,” Earring Boy finally ventured after a pause.
Jiang Chen, having calmed his rage, responded with a nod and a hint of approval, “Go ahead, take care of it. Dig up everything you can on that Wang Xiao kid!”
“Yes, Master Jiang!”
Earring Boy quickly nodded, then gestured towards the dining hall and asked, “Master Jiang, since Goddess Yu has left, are we still going to eat here?”
“The food in the dining hall is fit for pigs. Let’s go—I’ll treat everyone to a meal at a restaurant off-campus.”
Jiang Chen’s lips curled into a sly smile as he cast a contemptuous glance at the less fortunate students dining in the cafeteria, addressing Earring Boy and the others.
“Master Jiang is invincible!”
The underlings responded with excitement upon hearing his words.
……
The afternoon sun was brutally harsh, its rays distorting the very air upon the earth.
At Forest City University, one could see freshmen classes training all around.
In a corner of the basketball court, students from Traditional Chinese Medicine Class Four, clad in camouflage, were practicing standing at attention under the scorching sun.
Many female students clenched their teeth, sweat beading on their pale foreheads, lips turning white. They had been standing for nearly an hour with no break, as Instructor Lee had yet to give the signal.
“Stand up straight! You’re in military training—show me the bearing of a soldier!”
Instructor Lee’s icy demeanor was evident as he moved among the students of Class Four, barking reprimands.
“Instructor Lee, I can’t take it anymore.”
A petite girl with a frail constitution finally reached her limit and slumped to the ground, looking up at Instructor Lee with tearful eyes.
“Worthless, you can’t even manage something as simple as standing? Get up! You’re staying an extra half hour. If you don’t make it, forget about dinner.”
Instructor Lee’s face was a mask of frost as he berated the small-statured girl.
The girl was Yao Beier, with her sweet looks and gentle voice, she was petite and childlike in appearance, yet her figure was well-proportioned. In just one morning, the male students of Class Four had already dubbed her the ‘loli class flower.’
Yao Beier’s eyes brimmed with tears after being labeled worthless by Instructor Lee, yet she bit back her tears and defiantly rose to her feet.
Seeing this, many of the boys in the class were filled with indignation, their fists clenched tight, yet none dared to defend Yao Beier.
Crossing the instructor during military training is no trivial matter.
“Move it, didn’t you hear me?!”
As Yao Beier struggled to rise, Instructor Lee’s face twisted with impatience. He spat out a curse and, mid-sentence, his leg shot out, aiming a kick at Yao Beier.
No! The female classmates shrieked in unison at the sight.
The boys, witnessing the scene, were torn between intervening and their own apprehension.
Thud…
In the nick of time, a muffled thud echoed through the air.
A figure, not particularly tall, materialized in front of Yao Beier, his right instep intercepting Instructor Lee’s advancing foot. A nonchalant voice then cut through, “Instructor Lee, striking a girl hardly befits a soldier of honor!”
